Florida Standards Assessment

• As you know at the beginning of this school year, 2014-2015, Florida Public Schools transitioned from the Florida Comprehensive Assessment (FCAT) to the Florida Standards Assessment (FSA) in Reading and Mathematics

• In addition to state required assessments, students in Dade County will be required to complete End of the Year Tests in the other content areas

What has Changed?• More rigorous questions: multiple choice and written

responses• An increase in duration to 80 minutes

Why has it changed?• To emphasize success in future college and careers • To prepare students with 21st century skills• To provide more rigorous content and application of

knowledge • To place emphasis on critical and analytical thinking• To establish clear, consistent guidelines for

instruction

• MAFS and LAFS will be assessed with the new Florida Standards Assessments (FSA)

• Spring 2015 administration of elementary school assessments will include:– English Language Arts (ELA): grades 3- 5*– ELA Writing Component: grades 4 and 5* – Mathematics: grades 3- 5*

*5th grade will have Computer Based Testing

What Are the Standards and Assessments For Science

and Social Sciences?• The 2008 Next Generation Sunshine State

Standards (NGSSS) remain for science and social science

• Science FCAT 2.0 continues as the grade 5 science assessment

• Social Sciences supports literacy during K-5 required instruction

– Grades K-1: 60 minutes each week– Grades 2-5: 120 minutes each week

The Florida StandardsHow May I Help My Child?

• Read different types of books and informational text with your child

• Ask your child to find answers to questions in the text of books, newspaper articles, manuals, etc.

• Encourage your child to form and defend an opinion by supporting it with facts, details, and reasons from text

• Discuss mathematical ideas with your child have them explain these to you using pictures, graphs, etc.

• Visit the Florida Standards Assessment online portal at: www.fsassessments.org to become familiar with the

new assessments

End of Year Tests• Science test will be based on the

NGSSS and the Miami Dade Science curriculum.

• Social Studies test will be based on the Miami Dade Social Studies curriculum.

Ways to Help your Child Succeed in Reading

• Daily sustained silent reading –include a wide range of fiction and non-fiction materials

• Read Accelerated Reader books and take tests often

• Complete assigned iReady lessons • Reading Plus is still available and

could provide supplemental practice

Ways to Help your Child Succeed in Mathematics• Complete assigned iReady lessons• Practice addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts

• Practice solving single and multi-step word problems including fractions and elapsed time

• Understand geometric shapes, and spatial relationships of plane figures

What can parents do?• Create a special workspace and schedule daily

quiet time for your child to do his/her homework from school

• Monitor and supervise your child’s daily home learning assignments

• Schedule 15 minutes of special time everyday to listen to your child read

• After you read a book, ask your child what the main character did or felt like at the end of the story. Ask if he/she has ever felt like the main

character in the book. Why or why not?

What can parents do?• Have conversations with your child – research

shows that children who are involved in conversations have a better vocabulary

• Ensure that your child eats healthy foods and gets 9-10 hours of sleep each night. Free breakfast is available in the cafeteria daily

• Monitor and limit television and video game time• Involve your child in activities that develop

background knowledge such as visiting museums, and places of interest in the community

Day of the Test• Get plenty of sleep the night before the test • Have a healthy breakfast• Get to school on time• Read and follow all directions. Reread if necessary• Read the passages carefully• Read the questions and answer choices carefully.

Use test taking strategies learned in class• Look for key words from the questions as you

search for an answer in the passage

• Underline answers in the passage whenever possible

• Take your time to answer all questions and show work

• When finished, check to see that you have not skipped any questions

• If there is extra time, reread and check your answers, to be sure you are satisfied with your choices

Communication- Think of a Camera-One leg of the Tripod is You the parent, The second leg is us- The teacher, the Third leg of the tripod is The school administration. When one falls, the Camera falls! The camera is your child. We wouldn’t want that now would we?!Therefore, We all need to work together!!!
