• Female Clean Sweep in Field National Championships highlights the great work we do from club to association to state representation. We must continue to be up front in the female sports battlefield, it is a competitive space. We have held our 60% female participation in 2018 but we must be vigilant and continue to develop female role models to coach and mentor our young players.

• Our Respect for Officials was a wonderful campaign and attracted interest at all levels of the game and across the continent. Kylie and Zeke were great ambassadors and it is something we must all own. We should not tolerate abusive actions against our officials.

• The release of the Active Kid Voucher in 2018 saved our members $762,000 with 7981 members utilising the voucher for hockey - that is 64% of all members aged 4-18. With an election promise of 2 vouchers for each family in 2019 we are hopeful of further savings for our members.

• The signing of Steggles as our first true commercial partner has been very successful and they are enjoying our activation of the sponsorship. They also contributed as Match Day Sponsor for our Round 1 AHL game and have recently committed to support a Hockey NSW Family competition. Stay tuned for more on that in the coming weeks and remember when in the supermarket freezer section, chose Steggles products.

2018 Highlights

• Our Round 1 Match-Day at SOP against Queensland was a great success and a great test event for the new league launching in October this year. 2068 people attended the games at the Steggles Hockey Stadium and the positive sentiment from our players and fans was excellent.

• The 2018 Regional Challenge hosted by the Metro South West Association was at that stage our largest ever. Camden Council got on board and with that has created a great bond with the Association and further investments continue to come locally. This event truly was a wonderful season opening event.

• A massive thanks has to go to Destination NSW who have funded the hosting of Pro League at Sydney Olympic Park in 2019 and 2020. International Hockey in Sydney is a great way to increase the visibility of the sport.

• During the year I also caught up with 23 Life Members and presented them with a new Life Member Badge. It has been great reconnecting and chatting with these wonderful contributors to hockey in NSW,

• 5 Year Broadcast Deal for International and National Hockey through Fox Sports and on Kayo Streaming platform.

• Data better than all other sports. We need to use it to improve retention and engagement.

• Investment in hockey - Destination NSW bringing International games to Sydney Olympic Park, State Government and Private Business funding $15 million in new facilities in 2019 and 2020 - 7 new synthetic hockey fields in the next 2 years.

• We will launch our new team in the new national league in early April.

• TWO TEAMS, ONE DREAM - the first and only sporting code to have elite competition for men and women the same day, same venue, one after the other, three hours of entertainment. NEW FANS, NEW PARTNERS and a great opportunity to create new income streams for our sport.

• 5 years = 5 Pro Leagues, 2 Olympic Games, 5 National Leagues, other world events all broadcast.

Introduction

Page 19: Welcome to · CEO Presentation. David Thompson ... • Play MUSIC! A rocking Spotify playlist is broadcast all day Saturday and on ... > In this case, keeping 5 members at every club

• Historically Parkes was renowned as a strong hockey centre, the social Saturday family sport, producing quality representative teams and many state representative players along the way.

• Unfortunately Parkes experienced a 10-15 year slump in junior participation numbers, the association struggling to field rep teams and state rep honours were a rarity.

• This was due to a lack of management and direction, hence volunteer support was also poor.

Background

Page 20: Welcome to · CEO Presentation. David Thompson ... • Play MUSIC! A rocking Spotify playlist is broadcast all day Saturday and on ... > In this case, keeping 5 members at every club

• ALL junior players register with Parkes Junior Hockey (not clubs).

• Players are then evenly distributed into teams by the Junior Committee, considering ability, gender, school/friends and parent coaches.

• Competitions run from early April to mid September, excluding school holidays.

• Game times and field location for each grade are consistent and scheduled for the same time, same place each week for the whole season.

Current Junior Hockey Framework

Page 21: Welcome to · CEO Presentation. David Thompson ... • Play MUSIC! A rocking Spotify playlist is broadcast all day Saturday and on ... > In this case, keeping 5 members at every club

• Each team is allocated a coach, which is usually a hockey playing parent, club person or young state representative player.

• Only high school aged players are eligible to play in the men’s and women’s competitions, it is from this point that juniors enter the club system. This encourages Club members to be involved with our junior programs in order to generate exposure and increase members.

• Representative team selection processes are also consistent across all age groups, both boys and girls.

Current Junior Hockey Structure

Page 23: Welcome to · CEO Presentation. David Thompson ... • Play MUSIC! A rocking Spotify playlist is broadcast all day Saturday and on ... > In this case, keeping 5 members at every club

• 10% increase in participation numbers each year for the last two years.

• In 2018 there were over 400 registered junior hockey players in Parkes, which is great for a regional town with a population of just 10,000 people.

• ‘Parkes Junior Hockey’ Facebook page members increased by 200+ in last 2 years, now currently 766 members.

• Awarded inaugural 2017 ‘Community Event of the Year’ for most successful Kookaburra 8’s carnival. Parkes will have also hosted four other major SC’s in the last three years.

Positive Flow-On Effects & Results

Page 24: Welcome to · CEO Presentation. David Thompson ... • Play MUSIC! A rocking Spotify playlist is broadcast all day Saturday and on ... > In this case, keeping 5 members at every club

• In 2019 all Parkes Junior Girls Rep teams will participate in Division 1 or 2 at State Championships (in 2014 all age groups played in Division 3 or 4)

• In 2019 all ‘Parkes 1’ Junior Boys Rep teams will participate in Division 1 or 2 at State Championships (since 2015 Parkes have entered 2 teams in U13 & U15 Boys SC’s)

• In 2018 Parkes won the U13 Boys Division 1 Junior State Championship, the first Division 1 Championship win in approximately 20+ years

• NSW State/Blues/Squad representative honours have increased exponentially! In 2015 Parkes had one state rep, 2016 – 2, 2017 – 9, 2018 – 19 and for the 2019 squads/teams we have 14 already!!!

Key Points of Success For Parkes• Actively and positively promote hockey – social media, school newsletters, flyers,

RCC support.

• Communication is paramount – ALWAYS keep everyone informed.

• Organisation, order and consistency – Parents appreciate and support a ‘well organised’ organisation.

• Present a professional image – Executive Committee and Coordinators wear identifying shirts (red polos).

• Ensure kids learn to play hockey and have fun – teach the basic skills, but also play fun and engaging games.

• Play MUSIC! A rocking Spotify playlist is broadcast all day Saturday and on Wednesday evenings to create a fun atmosphere.

Page 26: Welcome to · CEO Presentation. David Thompson ... • Play MUSIC! A rocking Spotify playlist is broadcast all day Saturday and on ... > In this case, keeping 5 members at every club

• Provide development & networking opportunities for local coaches & parent coaches, e.g. gala days, group training sessions, accreditation.

• Offer encouragement/rewards – Weekly sponsored ‘Hockey Hero’ Awards for the kids, ‘great’ coffee and bacon/egg rolls for the parents!

• Make every hockey occasion a social event for players and parents. Parkes runs a successful Canteen and Bar with great food and service. Parents are rostered to assist each Saturday morning.

• Be inclusive. Make smart decisions, ones that will see MORE people play hockey. Accept and accommodate those with extra challenges in life, albeit physical, mental, financial, etc. Parkes has a wheelchair bound player who is part of the B Grade junior competition.

Key Points of Success For Parkes

Page 27: Welcome to · CEO Presentation. David Thompson ... • Play MUSIC! A rocking Spotify playlist is broadcast all day Saturday and on ... > In this case, keeping 5 members at every club

• Have the right people involved, good people, good coaches – anyone involved with community programs of any sort, need to be involved for the right reasons. Many of us are at hockey because of our kids, but we are involved because we want to contribute and improve the sport for all players. Must be there for the greater good of the sport and for all participants, not just our own children.

• Listen to all suggestions and don’t be scared to try something different. What may have worked 10 years ago might still be ok now, but a revised and refreshed operating model might work even better in today’s environment

retention and churn

R e t e n t i o n & C h u r n

> “We need to grow membership” is a common theme amongst sports

> “Grow membership”, “more members”

> What does this mean?

> Do you need more people to join, or fewer people to leave?

Page 32: Welcome to · CEO Presentation. David Thompson ... • Play MUSIC! A rocking Spotify playlist is broadcast all day Saturday and on ... > In this case, keeping 5 members at every club

formula

R e t e n t i o n & C h u r n

> Retention = How many members did you keep?

> Churn = Lost / (Returning + New)

> Magic number of 33% for participation sports (rather than elite bespoke e.g. platform diving - much higher turnover in those sports)
