Set deep in the heart of Australian Heritage, Tenterfield is a cultural epicentre. The Gateway to both the New England and Northern River Regions, the Shire of Tenterfield is a massive area of 713,439 hectares with an overall population of approximately 6,394 residents … and growing! Tenterfield town itself is surrounded by over 10 National Parks.
An untouched historical district surrounded by bushlands, Tenterfield enjoys warm summer days, cool mountain winter nights, blazing red autumns with tree-lined roads and bright wildflower springs.
The major centre of the shire is the town of Tenterfield, surrounded by the villages of Drake, Jennings, Legume, Liston, Torrington and Urbenville – each, as you will discover, with its own unique attractions.

TOWN OF
Tenterfield
‘Birthplace of our Nation’ - Sir Henry Parkes’ vision of a united Australia was presented in his famous Federation speech at the Tenterfield School of Arts on 24th October 1889, which led to the Federation of all Australian Colonies in 1901.
Tenterfield is one of the country’s most significant historic settlements through preservation of landmark buildings such as the School of Arts, Police Station and Gaol, Tenterfield Saddlery,
Railway Station and Stannum House. Colonial architecture contrasts with magnificent natural features including Bald Rock, Boonoo Boonoo Falls, Sundown and Girraween National Parks.
Bald Rock National Park features the largest exposed granite monolith in Australia, rewarding bushwalkers and climbers with an expansive panoramic view unequalled in the New England Region. Add the mystique of Aboriginal lore and you have a town not to be missed.
Streets ablaze with autumn colours heralding the crisp clear days of winter, roaring log fires, spectacular sunsets and time to enjoy great cuisine and vintage wines plus a great variety of accommodation – all on offer for that next escape!
It’s going to be a gorgeous day.

Urbenville serves as the northern gateway to Tenterfield Shire. Originally known as Tooloom, this village was renamed Urbenville after Mr William Urben who was the first white child born at the Tooloom gold diggings. Situated at the headwaters of the Clarence River, Urbenville lies nestled under Coutt’s Crown. Surrounded by State and National Parks with areas of rainforest rich in its flora and fauna, this area provides fishing, fossicking, canoeing and swimming opportunities in its numerous nearby streams. Pioneer Cottage Museum presents rooms just as they were when the early pioneers lived and worked in this rich farming and tall timber country. The home of the Lamb family, this cottage was built in 1892 in Legume before being relocated to Urbenville in 1977. (Open 1st & 3rd Sun or by appt. Until the late 1900s, cattle and timber were Drake’s primary industries, as well as a campsite for wagons, drovers, bullock teams and settlers passing between inland and coastal rivers. A shanty village of hotels, boarding houses, churches, timber cottages and tents in the 1870s, gold was discovered by accident just below Newmans Pinch on the western side of the village. Since then Drake has changed many times over, with rushes and declines, riches and poverty, a population of thousands, and barely 100. Timber and cattle grazing industries are still practised, and mining has been reduced to fossicking. Now Drake offers a variety of bush holidays, home stays, caravan park, camping, fishing, bushwalking, horse trail rides and mountain bike riding, as well as a gallery showing local talented artists in the community centre.
L I S TO NHigh in the mountains of the Great Dividing Range, the small rural village of Liston is surrounded by lush, gently undulating country. To the east, the hills fall away rapidly to Rivertree, the headwaters of the Clarence River. The surrounding country is predominantly used for cattle grazing although lavender, fruit and vegetables are also produced. Nearby rural attractions include two national parks. Historically, this area was the centre of a busy tin and silver mining industry. Only a few remnants remain, such as the historic Rivertree Chimney and the old settlers’ cemetery at Willson’s Downfall. Local establishments offer refreshments and a variety of accommodation options for those wishing to stay longer. Information on activities at the local community hall is available from the website, granitenet.com.au/groups/community/listonhall.

Jennings is one of the twin towns of Jennings and Wallangarra which are divided by the railway station placed exactly on the border of NSW and QLD. Named after the first Catholic Premier of NSW - Sir Patrick Jennings, this village has strong links with the Federation story where Sir Henry Parkes disembarked on the Qld side of the Railway Station before travelling on to Tenterfield from the NSW side to deliver his famous Federation Speech in 1889.
The Railway Station has been beautifully restored and now operates as an interactive Heritage Museum and Function Centre. (Brochures available). Jennings is only 5.5km from the heart of Girraween National Park.

Built as a private residence, Centenary Cottage is a fine example of Colonial architecture. Now housing the largest collection of memorabilia and historical material relating to Tenterfield and its district, the cottage is the nucleus of the complex. Within the complex is the General Sir Harry Chauvel Gallery built from money bequeathed by his sister Lillian Chauvel. The Gallery is a memorial to Sir Harry, the first Australian to command a military corps, and houses 38 original Lillian Chauvel paintings. Petrie Cottage, an 1860s wooden timber worker’s cottage, is also a part of the complex which houses a machinery collection and other displays. A valuable historic journey through time!

Deloraine has been used as an inn and school in days gone by. The land, purchased for 15 pounds and 10 shillings in 1858, was sold by Julia Brauer some time in 1872 for 200 pounds, the significant increase in price indicating a building was on the site at this stage. The property was sold in the early 1890s, with the solicitor of note – J. F. Thomas (Breaker Morant’s defending solicitor). 14 Clarence St Tenterfield n P 02 6736 2777

Behind the Roman Catholic Church is the original Catholic Church completed in 1867. Built by Thomas and John McGauran, this rubble stone Church with buttressed walls and pressed metal roof, is in remarkably sound condition. The first resident priest was Father Mathew Keogan (Jan 1866). An old stone presbytery which was on the site of the present presbytery was built about the same time. The stone was quarried on nearby Stoney Creek.

The Station was opened by Lord Carrington, the Governor of NSW in 1886, and the event was described as “the biggest in NSW Railway history”. The museum is one of only seven railway precincts in NSW under the control of the Office of Rail Heritage and the only one in northern NSW. It is among the most complete Station Precincts in terms of railway buildings and small objects and houses a large collection of railway rolling stock, typical of an important regional-style railway station. Today the station is supported by volunteer workers.

WALLANGARRA/JENNINGS RAILWAY STATION n CIRCA 1887
The historic ‘break-of-gauge’ Wallangarra Railway Station was the Queensland/New South Wales junction of the only rail link between Brisbane and Sydney until 1930. It has hosted many distinguished rail travellers, from several Royals to Sir Henry Parkes, the Father of Federation. The local community is unique, with one half, (Wallangarra) in Queensland, while the other half (Jennings), is in NSW, with the subsequent disruption to which such an unusual situation gives rise. This is epitomised in the very architecture of the station, with the awning on the eastern side having a NSW-style skillion roof, while the western awning is the bull-nosed Queensland style.

TENTERFIELD Wines
“Wine is constant proof that God loves us and loves to see us happy.”
~Benjamin Franklin~
Choose the wine you l ve...
Observe the colour of your wine. It should be clear, with the colour varying due to age, variety and perhaps the sweetness.
Give a swift swirl - and release the aromas.
Sniff and inhale. Describe the aroma... is it oak, pepper, fruit? The ‘nose’ of the wine is where complex flavours enhance the taste.
Take a mouthful, swish it around your mouth and cover your tastebuds. Then choose to swallow or spit. It’s up to you!ta

In 2007, iconic wine writer JamesHallidaypredictedbig things from the New England region. To this end, wines from Tenterfield are proving his prediction correct with two local semillons recently being included in Halliday’s Top 100 NSW wines.
Well known wine reviewer Huon Hooke also agreed with Halliday’s views after judging at the 2011 New England Wine Show, declaring he was happily surprised by just how many varieties were performing so well in the New England.
Popular varieties such as semillon, chardonnay, shiraz, merlot and cabernet sauvignon can be found in the cellar doors of the area, along with some delightful alternative varieties such as viognier, tempranillo and barbera. Tenterfield also produces some beautiful cold climate pinot noirs.
Vintage 2012 looks like being another cracker, with low yields and long dry ripening leading to excellent quality grapes being harvested.
There is no better time than now to explore the local cellar doors and experience what each has to offer.

German immigrant Joe Nicholl thought, “This is the perfect place to plant a vineyard”, when he arrived on foot in Tenterfield at the turn of the 19th century, before planting a small vineyard on his property Deetswood, Tenterfield.

There is evidence that tin mining millionaire John Holmes Reid, Mayor of Tenterfield for three terms and original owner of Stannum House, was a great lover of wine and planted his own personal vineyard close to his home near Stannum. Of the most recent history, Reedy Creek Estate was the first winery to make wines available on a commercial basis – and others have fast followed. With wines of this area winning awards and people learning of the region’s great climatic situation for grape growing, all the right ingredients are there for a bright winemaking future!

Temptations
Traditionally a cattle grazing area, Tenterfield district boasts a variety of prize-winning stock. The two main breeds of beef in Tenterfield are the Angus and Hereford. Merino sheep are bred for their fine wool and New England fat lambs are a much sought after commodity. Premier Meats in High Street have won gold medals for their sausages … and while a secret recipe has been used, there’s nothing to stop you buying a supply of them to take home!
The Tenterfield Fishing and Restocking Club takes great care in releasing thousands of fingerlings into its rivers and waterways to ensure good fishing all year. The trick is to find out from a local where the best fishing spots are. Tenterfield Creek, which runs through the town, holds yellowbelly and cod. The Clarence River holds bass, catfish and mullet. (Eastern cod lives here and as a protected species, must be returned.) The western fall rivers which run west off the tablelands – Mole and Dumaresq Rivers – hold yellowbelly, cod and catfish and there is crown land fishing on Deadman’s Reserve 14km west on Tenterfield Creek (within NSW). Closed season on Murray Cod is from 1 Sep - 30 Nov. (See inside front cover for fishing licence information.)
Friendly restaurants, great pubs andrecreation clubs …
Tenterfield Fishing and Restocking Club meets every second Thursday at the Telegraph Hotel, 7.30pm.

TENTERFIELD …
LegendaryTenterfield has one of the most unusual histories in Australia. Woven into its history are colourful and talented legends which have made a vastimpression on what makes up Australia today. With the likes of Sir Henry Parkes who spoke the words of Federation to Australia, to Peter Allen whose talent was so great he won critical acclaim for his work, endearing himself forever in the hearts of all Australians with his nostalgic song writ-ten about his grandfather, George Woolnough - the Tenterfield Saddler.
Solicitor J. F. Thomas who defended Breaker Morant in the South African War in 1902 lived in Tenterfield and owned the Tenterfield Star Newspa-per which is still in publication today. Then there were rebels who became part of Australian folklore such as Captain Thunderbolt, the bushranger whose hiding places were in and around Tenterfield town. Well known poet Banjo Paterson also came to Tenterfield and married his sweetheart, local girl Miss Alice Walker.
S I R H E N R Y PA R K E S
Sir Henry Parkes’ political campaign peaked with his famous Federation speech to the people of Tenterfield at the Tenterfield School of Arts on 24th October 1889, and in doing so he won immortality as the “Father of Federation” with his catchcry “One People. One Destiny”.
Born into poverty in Warwickshire (England) on the 27th May 1815, heapplied for assisted passage to Australia in 1836 as an adult, aftermarrying his teacher Clarinda Varney.
Once in Australia, Henry worked many lowly paid jobs before becoming very influential politically. He became elected to Parliament in 1854 and in May 1872 he became Premier of New South Wales - serving his State as Premier on five occasions, spanning eleven and a quarter years.
M A J O R J F T H O M A S Earned world fame at the South African War in 1902 in the defence of Harry “The Breaker” Morant. Respected in his home town as a quiet man of deep and sincere convictions, the whole Morant affair had tormented the Major who defended Harry to the last hour, trying desperately for a stay of execution! Morant and Handcock were executed because of the murder of Boer prisoners, rather than for Hesse’s murder, of which they were both acquitted at their Court Martial. This was the last time an Australian soldier was tried by a British Court Martial.

P E T E R A L L E N – T H E B OY F R O M O ZBorn Peter Woolnough on 10 February 1944, at the Prince AlbertMemorial Hospital in Tenterfield, Peter Allen become one of the country’s most internationally recognised Australian composers – his gift to the town became one of Australia’s most recognised songs “TenterfieldSaddler” , taking our town to the international stage. After a childhood ca-reer of singing, dancing and playing piano, Peter joined entertainer Chris Bell as “The Allen Brothers”. They were discovered by Judy Garland when she saw them in Hong Kong in 1964. The duo went on to feature on the Johnny Carson Tonight Show in 1967.Peter married Judy’s daughter, Liza Minelli for three years, remaining close friends after. Like Bette Midler, Peter garnered popularity among the gay audience of Manhattan’s cabaret circuit and rolled into the mainstream, filling the huge Radio City Music Hall with brash, camp music and over-flowing with feathers and sequins. While best remembered for “I Still Call Australia Home”, “Tenterfield Saddler” and “I Go to Rio”, his 11 albums in-cluded standards that will be sung for decades.
T E N T E R F I E L D S A D D L E RFor 50 years, the Saddler on High Street was a meeting place for discussions, while saddler George Woolnough continued to ply his trade, listening but undisturbed to the chatter and opinions of his many friends who wandered in. It was the compassion of George Woolnough that attracted so many to the High Street Saddlery from 1908 until his retirement in 1960. George died in 1963 and his grave is in the Tenterfield Cemetery, C/E - Row E, Lot 34. After the first two saddlers, Charles Pavel and Dan Egan, came George Woolnough, Ted Daly and the very last, Trevor Gibson. The Tenterfield Saddlery was classified by the National Trust of Australia in 1972. The doors and woodwork are of red cedar and apart from the maintenance, the Saddlery is in its original condition.

Tenterfield Station (a sheep property) and surrounding stations were taken up on both sides of the Great Dividing Range. This territory included at least two different language groups of Aborigines. In the colder months, the people to the east went further east. Those from the Boonoo Boonoo area went down to Boorook because it was lower and warmer (Boorook means warm). These spoke a western form of Bunjalung.
Those from west of the Divide went further down to the west to escape the cold. Most of these people were probably Jokembal. This simple activity meant that there were many months of the year when no Aboriginal people were to be found in the area. The three areas of most significance were Bluff Rock, Woollool Woolloolni and Bald Rock (known by them as Boonoo Boonoo – Big Rock). There are visitor information sheets on these three sites.
CAPTAIN THUNDERBOLT
Captain Thunderbolt … Frederick Wordsworth Ward was
born at Wilberforce in the Windsor District of the Colony of
New South Wales in about 1836. (As no record of his birth
exists, the exact date is unknown.) He was the son of former
convict, Michael Ward, who was transported to that colony
in 1815, with wife Sophia following him. Together they had
10 children, Frederick being the youngest.
Thunderbolt was well known throughout the Tenterfield
district. There are many caves and hideouts in the New
England, but few are as easy to visit as the Tenterfield one.
His bushranging career began after escaping the notorious
Cockatoo Island Prison in Sydney Harbour, where he was
serving a sentence for horse stealing. The tales of his exploits
are many and become more controversial with time. His
defiance of the troopers eventually caused his downfall at
Uralla where Constable Walker called on him to surrender.
With Thunderbolt shouting, “I’ll die first!”, Constable Walker’s
next shot found its mark and, thinking he was mortally
wounded, the police left him on the river bank, intending
to return the next morning for the body. When the police
finally returned they found that Thunderbolt had crawled
some distance and was under a clump of bushes and still
alive. The story goes that he died shortly before the group
reached Uralla. Constable Walker received a reward and was
promoted.
INTEREsTINg fACTs …from www.rootsweb.com
Thunderbolt never shot at anyone, including the police. Thunderbolt’s wife, Mary Ann Bugg, by her Aboriginal heritage, had a total hatred of guns due to the way so many of her people had been murdered by the white population of the time. During her time with Thunderbolt she instilled in him this same total hatred of guns and shooting at people – this was an important factor in the subsequent pursuit and death of Thunderbolt.
Thunderbolt was arguably the first known Australian male to take paternity leave. A study of his crimes and personal family life shows that, whenever his wife was expecting, he took up to nine months off from his bushranging career to look after his wife and family. Out of his 6 1/2 year career, he took nearly two years off looking after his family. According to some Aborigines, much of this time was spent with one of their communities in the Gunnedah area, where he was protected and regarded as one of them.
REST & play...Tenterfield offers a wide range of sporting facilities, as well as plenty of outdoor recreational parks and attractions. Tenterfield Golf Club is the star attraction as one of the most ‘playable’ golf courses in rural Australia. The club invites you to enjoy a leisurely or competitive game with locals. The Tenterfield Bowling Club is also a major drawcard, with weekly games scheduled just for you. Both clubs offer great dining and accommodation facilities. Or if you are into adventure, enquire about Wangrah Wilderness Lodge’s range of outdoor activities on offer. The Royal Hotel Motel and Telegraph Hotel Motel offer great dining and accommodation.
