COURSEDESCRIPTION

Apracticalintroductiontomodernexperimentalapproachesingeneticsandmolecularbiologyasappliedtosuchtopicsasgenomics(geneidentificationandclassification),functionalgenomics(genomeexpressionprofiles)andbioinformatics(computationalgenomicanalysis).

Thisyear,thegoalofthisonlinecourseistogiveyouexperiencewithunderstandingandevaluatinggeneticslaboratorytechniques,andwritinglabreportsfollowingprimaryliteratureformats.

Restrictedto:studentswithaminof70%inBio2581BandBio2290F/G.ANDtoyrs3&4studentsinHSPgenetics,HSPgenetics&biochem,majororminoringenetics.

2. COURSESTRUCTURE

Biology3596isalab-basedcoursethatmeetstwiceperweek:oncefor1-hourconcept-baseddiscussionsandagainfora1-hourtechnicallabdiscussionduringthetimespecifiedforeachsection.Studentsareexpectedtoreadthelabmanualinadvance,andarrivetodiscussionsfullyinformedabouttheweek’sexperiments.

Thecourseisdividedintofivemainexperiments.Eachmainexperimentcontainsaseriesofstepsthattypicallyrunoverseveralweeks.Thisyear,eachexperimentwillbepresentedindependently,over2weeks.Attheendofeachmainexperimentareportsummarizingandintegratingtheresultsandinterpretationofexperimentsfromthatmainexperimentwillbedue.

Youareexpectedtoattendatleast50%ofallthesynchronoussessions.Additionalabsences,withorwithoutjustification,willleadtodeductionstowardyourparticipationgrade.

Thiscourseischallengingandfastpaced.Tobesuccessful,youmustengage,readtheassignedmaterialandperformtherequiredtasks.Donotfallbehind!Usethecheckliststohelpinyourworkorganization.

ACADEMICCONSIDERATIONFORSTUDENTABSENCE

Self-ReportedAbsence(SRA):Studentswillhaveuptotwo(2)opportunitiesduringtheregularacademicyeartouseanon-lineportaltoself-reportanabsenceduringthesemester,providedthefollowingconditionsaremet:theabsenceisnomorethan48hoursinduration,andtheassessmentforwhichconsiderationisbeingsoughtisworth30%orlessofthestudent’sfinalgrade.Studentsareexpectedtocontacttheirinstructorswithin24hoursoftheendoftheperiodoftheself-reportedabsence,unlessnotedonthesyllabus.
