Attendance

• School is from 7:55- 2:45. If your child arrives after 8:05, they are considered tardy and need to check in at the office.

• We go to Specials at 8:10, so it is extremely important that kids are on time.

• Due to safety issues, there will be no early checkout after 2:15. See Parent Handbook for details.

• All absences are unexcused until a note is received from a parent or guardian.

Parent Involvement• We welcome parent visits to our

classroom; however, all visitors MUST sign in using the computer system in front of the office prior to coming to the classroom.

• Parent volunteers are needed for extended team planning, chaperoning field trips, planning events, and other classroom needs.

Title I• Parent Academy• Compact for Learning• Extended Learning• To insure our continued Title I

funds, please fill out and return a free/reduced lunch form.

Homework Policy• Weekly homework will consist of

30-45 minutes per night, normally Monday – Thursday.

• Your child is expected to write in their Writer’s Notebook each night.

• Your child is also expected to read each night for a minimum of 30 minutes, including weekends.

• Record the book title and sign in the agenda daily.

Student Agenda• Each student will receive an agenda.• The agenda is an excellent tool in which

to record all homework assignments, project due dates, upcoming tests and other important reminders.

• After checking your child’s completed homework and other information, please initial the agenda.

BEAR ClubBeing Extraordinary and

Responsible Criteria*All homework complete on time, all

classwork complete on time, and agenda signed daily by parents.

* Follows classroom behavior plan daily.

*Awards will be given at the end of each 9-week session.

Weekly Folders• Will be sent home every

week with the previous week’s work.

• We will be tracking progress with assessments.

• Please sign and return all assessments after reviewing them.

• Class averages will be recorded next to the student score for you to compare your child’s score with the class.

Curriculum

Testing• Fourth grade students are required to

take the End of Grade (EOG) test in Reading and Math.

• Craven is again piloting the new state writing assessment this year.

Writing• Fourth grade will be given four prompts a year for the

NC state writing assessment.• Two of the prompts are Narrative in which students will

tell a personal or imaginative story.• The other two prompts are Expository. This type of

writing will be taken through the entire writing process and is related to our Science or Social Studies units.

• We will be teaching writing through the Writer's Workshop model.

• Other types of writing include letters and poetry.

Math• We will study data, geometry, decimals, fractions,

multiplication, division, place value, order of operations, properties and lots of problem solving.

• Please make sure your child is able to recall basic multiplication and division facts. We will continue to practice facts using Math Facts in a Flash.

• There will be a weekly Computation Test. A practice computation homework worksheet will be given on Tuesday in order to prepare for the test on Thursday. We will go over the homework so that your child will have enough time to ask questions and practice the problems before the weekly test.

Reading• Your child should read for pleasure for 30 minutes each

night. This nightly reading should be recorded in your child’s agenda.

• Your child will also read independently for 30 minutes in class. It is important for your child to read in order to build endurance for reading longer selections.

• Your child should have a book at all times. We will visit the library as a class once a week.

• We will also teach reading skills through mini lessons and guided reading groups..

Science and Social Studies

• The concepts for both of these subjects will be integrated through Reading and Writing.

• The units we will cover in Science include: Animals, Rocks and Minerals, Electricity and the Human Body.

• The units we will cover in Social Studies include the Three regions of NC, map skills, government, economics and the history and symbols associated with our state.

1 to 1 Classroom• We have a wonderful opportunity this year at AWE

called the 1 to 1 classroom.• Each child will be assigned a netbook which will allow

the students to increase their technology skills as they learn 4th grade curriculum objectives.

• There will be a small fee of $18.00 to cover accident insurance for the use of the netbook for each child.

• The students will be able to use these during the day at school for Math Facts in a Flash, AR tests, STAR tests, published writing tasks, taking notes and integrative multimedia projects.

Tentative Field Trips• NC Symphony• Beaufort Historical Society Tour• NC Aquarium• Outer Banks• Drama Presentation• Water Safety at the YMCA***We will need chaperones for all

field trips.***All trips must be paid for in

advance and the cost is non-refundable.

***All of these trips are tentative this year and may be canceled due to transportation costs and the nature of our economy.

Conference Opportunities

Many issues can be resolved through email or telephone conversations. However, if a conference is needed we will make every effort to schedule it at a convenient time for everyone involved.

Awesomeville FairTBA

• This is our major PTA Fund-raiser.

• Each grade level will have a booth with games and prizes.

• We will have a class theme basket for the silent auction.

• We will need volunteers to help run the booth and donate items for the class basket.
