February 9-15, 2020

My dear Parishioners, As we celebrate this Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time, we are in the midst of National Marriage Week which began this past Friday. Today, Sunday, is being celebrated as World Marriage Day. This is not listed on our Catholic calendar and the Scrip-ture readings for today make no specific reference to marriage, though in the Gospel, Jesus does tell his disciples that they are the salt of the earth and light of the world. That can certainly apply in a very special way to Christian husbands and wives. But liturgically, this Sunday remains the Fifth Sunday in Ordi-nary Time. Nevertheless, that does not prevent me from shar-ing some notions with you about the Sacrament of Matrimony. Of course, as we celebrate National Marriage Week, we are reminded by columnists and critics about the dramatic drop in formal marriages over the past several years. Couples for a variety of reasons choose to cohabit rather than formalize their relationship with many proceeding to have families. Coupled with this disturbing fact is the reminder of the divorce rate. Neither are very fine platforms for launching a discussion on marriage. But let me continue. I have always felt it a bit tragic that, as a Church, while we take years to prepare a man for the priesthood, we give mini-mal attention to preparing couples for marriage, which by com-parison is certainly as important if not more important in the Divine economy than the priesthood. I mean that in this sense, if we don’t have good marriages, we won’t have good voca-tions to the priesthood or any other calling in the Christian community. Pope Francis, good pastor that he is, is addressing this issue. On my part, in the past as I have shared in preparing many couples for marriage, I have always favored, among various good options, the “couple to couple” approach. This involves pairing the younger couple with an older experienced couple in the latter’s home, where they spend about six sessions to-gether following a designated program that covers all the es-sentials. It is an intimate, enriching, and priceless program proven so successful in setting the newly weds on their way. The pastor also has a role to play but it cannot compare to that of the sponsor couple who are, as the saying goes, “the proof of the pudding.” —Fr. Jerome, C.P.

QUINTO DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO 9 DE FEBRERO DE 2020

Page 4

P. Luis, C.P.
