Message from our Pastor

STEWARDSHIP - CORRESPONSABILIDAD

2021 Lenten Regulations - Normas de Cuaresma pg 4

My dear Parishioners,

There is a deep desire in every human heart to live well. But to live well means so many different things to different people. For

some, it means to care for their physical wellbeing, for others it may mean seeking a good education, for far too many in today’s

world, it means simply to survive one more day. For believers, it means to take care not only of their physical and material needs,

but also to nurture their spiritual life. Ultimately, regardless of our status in life, we human beings must look after both our physi-

cal and spiritual lives if we want to live well. This means that we have to strive for integrity, what Merriam-Webster calls “the qual-

ity or state of being complete or undivided.” To live well is to live a balanced life. To live with integrity enables us to move

through life with steadiness and security. I know who I am, I am aware of my strengths and my weaknesses, I am capable of asso-

ciating with others without losing anything of myself in the process. Associating with others who are striving for the same goals as

I am, adds strength and joy to my life. But when I associate with others who lack balance or integrity in their lives, I can do either

of two things; I can ignore their condition or I can determine to raise them up. When Christians encounter others whose lives are

off balance, they instinctively offer a helping hand. This requires delicacy and empathy, two demanding ingredients of integrity.

Lent is an ideal time for those of us who call ourselves Christian to reexamine our lives, to check our own balance. There are many

in this world who call themselves Christian but who scandalously betray that calling. We don’t want to be numbered among them.

Christianity exists not for its own sake but for the world and all its people. We Catholic Christians are constantly reminded of this

especially during Lent, when from the lips of Jesus Christ himself we were instructed how to pray and fast and offer alms. But it is

not only his words that instruct us, it is the example of his very life, a life by God’s design that perfectly integrates the Divine and

the human. The Word became flesh and dwelt among us in order that humanity might be fully integrated with its God.

Those of us privileged to be called his disciples and empowered by his Spirit to be and to do in our time and place what the histori-

cal Jesus did in his time and place, owe it to him and to our companion disciples to engage in a healthy self-examination of con-

science, to seek divine remedies for our weaknesses, if necessary, to reset our compasses, and with unwavering faith, boundless

hope, and lively charity, to resume our mission.

—Fr. Jerome, C.P.
