Standard or flexible trajectoryYou choose yourself which courses you follow when and how manycredits you take per year or semester !

Two possibilities:

1) Pre-defined model trajectory (only courses from your phase)- Guaranteed lecture and exam schedule

- Balanced spread over the semesters

- Indication of education phase (1 or 2) and sem (1 or 2)

- Decision on pass/fail taken at the end !

- Advise to follow model trajectory as much as possible !

2) Indivualized trajectory (courses from both phases)- not following the model trajectory

- follow courses from different phases

- check order of enrolment information (i.e. prerequisite) !

- In case of re-registrations of failed courses

- Decision on pass/fail taken at the end !

Standard of flexible trajectory

Recommended to choose Standard trajectory as much as possibleto avoid problems with schedules etc.

Exams and IES

1. Assignation period: 8-21 september- Exams for compulsory courses of your study phase are automatically assigned !

You can only check the schedule, but not change it.

- ATTENTION ! If you deselect a compulsory course in your ISP in this periodand afterwards want to select it again your exam moment is gone, and you cannot register it anymore in this period !

2. Registration period: 22 september – 8 october- Your can now select and register exam moments for all non-compulsory courses and for

compulsory courses of another study phase

- You can also change already assigned exam moments for compulsory courses to another date in order to avoid possible conflicts with other exam moments for electives !

• The exams for courses without a schedule at this moment, will be organized in agreement with the teacher.

• Only send your ISP when exam schedule is complete !

• For exams of the third examination session (august-september) you have toregister beginning of july (deadline: 15 july):

Exam formats, scoring and feedback

• Default format: oral examination with written preparation: after you got the questions, you prepare the answers. Then you are called by the professor and you clarify and discuss these answers with the professor.

• Dont let you surprise ! – We will organize a dummy exam to test yourself !

• Professors should explain exam format well in time ! If he/she did not: ASK ! Formats are also available in the program book

• Courses are scored on a total scale of 20 points, percentage is weighted sum of scores of all courses !

• After each examination session: scores will be made available on KU Loket, and a session will be planned with program director to discuss your results and what to do next !

• You are allowed/encouraged to contact the Professor to ask for feedback after the exams: what did I do right/wrong ?

Problems during exams

• Exam dates can only be changed in exceptional situations (e.g. illness), and ONLY by the ombuds person after consulting with the teacher

• If you cannot attend an exam• ALWAYS inform the faculty secretary (Isabelle Benoit) and (one of) the

ombuds persons (Devin Verreck and Jie Hu) beforehand !- Inform the teacher in time that you will not attend the exam !

- Absence on a fixed examdate is ONLY allowed based on clear motivation (illness, accident, personal problems), NOT on study related reasons (not ready to do exam).

- Unregister your exam in the IES system

- If you are absent without reason or notice you loose your exam chance

• Ombudsperson is available for helping you with problems (conflicts, schedule, illness, etc.): Devin Verreck, Jie Hu !

Fraude and plagiarism

ATTENTION: (attempts to) fraude during an exam is strongly penalized !

What is considered fraude ? Some examples:

use smart phone, cell phones, notebooks etc. during the exam to lookup exam relevant information

pass notes, texts etc. to another student during an exam without permission from supervisors

write key words or formulas on your arm in in your hand

have course notes, books, handouts open during a closed book exam

copy/paste text from public sources into own reports without proper referencing

Possible sanctions: An invalid exam: the student needs to retake the exam

An appropriate mark or zero for the assignment or the examination in question

No marks for some or any of the examinations during the examination period in question

Exclusion for one or more course units. The student receives a zero for the course units in question and will only be able to retake an examination in the next academic year

Exclusion for a programme of study.

Loss of the right to enrolment in the next academic year or the two next academic years.

• When you do retake exam in August for a failed course: you keep your highestscore from the two chances (only within one academic year )

• When you pass the course you cannot do a retake to increase your score !

• You can send motivated request for permission by the faculty to do retake exams of sem 1 courses in the June session, but only for special reasons (should be motivated and exceptional !)

• EMM students are allowed to take second chanceexams in the June session to allow a smooth transitionto 2nd year university, BUT it is advised to do this onlyif the number of exams is limited to a few (1 to 3 max) ! They have to ask permission as well !

Common scoring system for EMM Nano students

• all courses of the program, including the master thesis, are scored ina common scoring system.

• 1st year is initially scored in KUL scoring system, conversion for 1st

year scores is done in October of the second year

• Cumulative study-efficiency (CSE) as central study progress parameter

CSE=

• The cumulative study-efficiency is used for:- Re-registration (see next slide): > 50%- Number of credits you are allowed to take in the next phase:

• CSE>70%: unlimited number of credits can be taken (in the 2nd year)CSE<70% max 66 credits can be taken in the 2nd year.First year max 66 credits only !
