TERMS TO KNOW
Loan: $$$ borrowed and needs to be repaid. A simple concept students must understand.
Expected Family Contribution (EFC): The amount of $$$ you are expected by the federal gov’t to contribute to your child’s education. The amount determined often provokes laughs, groans or shrieks.
Total Cost of Attendance (COA): All costs of attending school that year including books, transportation, misc. fees, plus tuition & R&B.

FSA ID: Electronic signature used for filing and correcting the FAFSA.
17
What types of financial aid
are there?
4 Types:

Unsubsidized: not need based
○ Perkins: Campus-based
○ Parent PLUS Loan (Up to full “cost of attendance” minus student’s financial aid. Requires credit worthy applicant.)
2) Grants: money that never has to be repaid. Awarded primarily based on need (Pell), or other factors.

The DRT is available 1-2 weeks after filing.

23
How to apply (cont.)…9. Colleges and Universities then determine your financial aid award and then notify you of it, either my mail or email, usually in April…later for community colleges.

What Determines College Costs:The amount college will cost is based upon the following figures,
aka
The “Total Cost of Attendance” @WSU 2014/15
Tuition $11,396
Room and board $11,276
Fees $1,002
Transportation $1,434
Personal Expenses $2,108
Books and Supplies $960
Basic Expense Total $28,176
Tuition (CC/TC) $4500(15 cr. @ OC)
Tuition (State 4 yr.) $6534-$10,984
Tuition (Low Private) $26,410
Tuition (High Private) $44,800
26
So what will college cost you?Total Cost of Attendance (COA):$25,000
Minus-Exp. Fam. Cont. (EFC) ($5,000)
Equals aid you can receive: $20,000
The college may give you an aid package equaling the $20,000…they also may not. This is called unmet need.
27
Which College Will Cost You More?
UPS Total Cost of Attendance vs. UW Total Cost Of Attendance
= $58,352 = $23,269
