WelcomeWelcome to London and the Open Government Partnership (OGP) summit.
We are delighted to have delegates from so many countries, organisations and governments here in London. Two years ago eight governments came together with civil society leaders to launch the OGP. I said then - and feel even more strongly now - that transparency is an idea whose time has come. Over the next two days we will have the opportunity to demonstrate that this is the case, to celebrate what has been achieved and to learn from each other. My goal is to see the summit embody the values of the OGP itself - to be open, collaborative and innovative.
We are coming together at a time when more and more people across the world are demanding open, efficient and responsive governments. Since the last OGP Summit in Brasilia we have welcomed 7 new countries to the OGP, building new collaboration between governments and civil society and pushing for reform. This summit is a celebration of the progress we have made and a call to action to continue the work of openness, even when it is difficult. We need to learn from what has gone wrong, as well as from what has gone right. The OGP must demonstrate its credibility. Charting a vision and making firm commitments is a significant start but now is the time to seize the opportunity – to work together for reform so that our societies continue to pursue their ambition to become ever more accountable and transparent.
I hope you find the next two days exhilarating and inspiring. I look forward to meeting many of you and to hearing about your work.
Yours,
The Rt Hon Francis Maude MP
Minister for the Cabinet Office and Paymaster General
