Dear Members & Supporters of the American Association of Orthopaedic Executives (AAOE):

The AAOE defines itself as “Where Orthopaedic Executives Become Experts” and nowhere is that philosophy more evident than at our annual educational conference. We are committed to providing you with the highest quality content available to musculoskeletal practice leaders at all levels of experience. If you ever wished you could design a conference to address the specific issues and challenges you encounter every day in a musculoskeletal practice, you will find that the AAOE Annual Conference is exactly that: designed by your peers for maximum Return on Investment every minute of the conference.

I’ll never forget my first AAOE Annual Conference. My hope was that there would be enough relevant content to make the time, trip, and money worth it.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that not only was there plenty of relevant content, there was so much that I had to make hard choices between which ones to attend and which ones to miss! We implemented numerous improvements at my practice based on what I had learned both from sessions and colleagues at that conference. Without a doubt, the AAOE Annual Conference became a mandatory part of the job thereafter.

Our profession has been charged with providing the highest level of service, hiring the most talented staff, meeting stringent documentation requirements, ensuring strict compliance with the cascade of new regulations, and satisfying our team of healthcare providers. At the same time we are thanked by payers for our efforts and expenses with lower reimbursement, more patient responsibility, and more frequent denials.

The AAOE Annual Conference provides you with the most current and pertinent content available to address all of these challenges. There are unmatched opportunities for connecting and networking with your peers, matching faces with names you have seen on the Listserv and learning directly from each other via dedicated time held for group size and geographic region collaboration.

The AAOE Annual Conference would not be possible without the support of our exhibitors and sponsors. This year’s sponsors and exhibitors have not only provided financial support, a number of them also participated in planning, with some traveling many miles at their own expense to help us make the conference meaningful for all involved. I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you and I encourage all members to spend time with, and show gratitude to, our loyal supporters.

In closing, I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all the volunteer members of our AAOE Councils and Committees and amazing staff for their unselfish and tremendous time and efforts. Working with AAOE colleagues and staff on the 2013 AAOE Annual Conference has been inspiring and re-affirming that among our members we have some of the most intelligent, energetic, and capable people in healthcare working among us. On behalf of AAOE, I invite you to join us in San Diego at the 2013 AAOE Annual Conference!

Sincerely,

Barbara Sack, MSHA, CMPEAAOE President, 2012 – 2013

Dr. Max Rogers, “Doc” along with another representative from Afterburner, Inc., will share his application of combat-proven fighter-pilot skills to achieve victory in today’s healthcare business. Afterburner, Inc. is a team of men and women elite former military professionals with a powerful mix of combat experience combined with extensive business skills. Dr. Max Rogers is a board certified, private practitioner in obstetrics and gynecology. He also serves as Chief of Staff of a 640 person medical staff. As Chief, Dr. Rogers works to educate physicians and staff on issues of patient safety, and utilizing improvement processes from aviation and adapting them to the medical profession.

Flawless Healthcare is a high-energy, multimedia keynote which explores the Flawless Execution Model and how the model relates to the demanding and changing healthcare business. For the last 20 years, the World Healthcare Organization and other medical organizations have recognized that the improvements in teamwork, communication and collaboration that dramatically improved aviation safety since the 1980’s directly relate to many of the challenges facing the healthcare industry. Today, many medical units are using techniques from the aviation community and specifically the Flawless Execution Model to dramatically improve the way their teams perform.

The Flawless Execution Model:

Plan The plan starts with an objective that is clear, measurable and achievable and supports your company’s overall strategy.

Brief You communicate the plan. It is essential that people on the front lines know exactly what is expected of them. Businesses ignore this — often at their peril.

Execute Even with a solid plan and a good brief, a mission can still fail due to Task Saturation or task overload. Task Saturation is the reality or perception of having too much to do without the time or resources to accomplish it. Afterburner, Inc. helps teams combat Task Saturation by identifying resources and managing priorities.

Debrief The last step is the Debriefing. After each mission, Fighter Pilots hold a nameless, rankless Debrief. Each person, without fear of reprimand, rehashes what worked, what did not work and why both the good events and the bad events happened. Key lessons learned from the Debrief are applied to the next plan. Debriefing speeds up learning and helps to fine tune the processes that ensure success.

Kathy is President of KeepShedding! Inc., a company that ignites organizations to SHED and develop effective leaders. She is also founder of the Keep Shedding Educational Foundation which sends orphaned African children with AIDS to school.

Kathy infuses audiences with timely change management tools, innovative employee engagement strategies and accelerated methods for building traction and accountability.

As a former hospital executive, she strategically led Memorial Health Care System’s organizational development efforts to become one of the top 100 hospitals in America. Her most popular book, Shed or You’re Dead®: 31 Unconventional Strategies for Growth and Change is the recipient of a Writer’s Digest International Book Award.

Her life was transformed when she was working as an ER/trauma nurse and was the first healthcare worker in America to be diagnosed positive for AIDS as a result of workplace exposure. She received national attention as a result of this life-altering hospital-based event that ‘made her a poster child’ for the Center for Disease Control (CDC). The diagnosis, a death sentence in the mid-80s, was confirmed with multiple positive tests. Months later, all tests returned negative. A miracle or medical error? No one is able to explain. The three months that Kathy lived with that traumatic diagnosis was a life-altering experience.

Her presentations reach far beyond that experience to build a touchstone with each member of the audience. Her dramatic account provides focus, inspiration and practical tools for people to lead and master change in their personal and professional lives.

Think about it for a moment — have you ever met a person that enjoys being bossed around? The most common form of leadership is micro-management — which is destructive, expensive and an organizational buzz kill. Most leaders micro-manage because they have never been sufficiently trained on “how to lead.” In this program, Walter tells how to turn the destructive dangers of micro-management around with the fundamentals of leadership. Leaders learn how to empower employees to own and be accountable for what they do. As a result, employees feel engaged, inspired and motivated, and leaders go on to create and grow a culture of accountability that builds retention and productivity for years to come — which is nothing but good news for your bottom line!

Former NBA star Walter Bond is a speaker who motivates people through his life story of trials and triumphs. Growing up in Chicago, he always dreamed of playing in the NBA. Though he lacked the natural athletic gifts of many of his peers, through hard work, parental encouragement, and discipline, he achieved his dream, and had an eight-year professional playing career with the Dallas Mavericks, Utah Jazz, and Detroit Pistons. He also spent time as a broadcast analyst for the Minnesota Timberwolves.

He later applied the same principles he’d used as a pro-basketball player to achieve great success off the court as an entrepreneur, business owner, and financial analyst. A powerful keynote speaker, Walter Bond transforms his athletic and business savvy into an action-packed inspirational message that will deliver results to your organization, regardless of their circumstances. He spreads positivity through his inspirational story, and shows listeners how they truly can live their dreams.
