How much is out there?
Why is it there?
What does it do?
How to safeguard it?

Truth be told
• Call text „Advanced study institute“, i.e. Germany wanted to have its own NCEAS
• sDiv is basically designed to mimic NCEAS (with a pinch of the ARC Vegetation Function Network)
• But there are some differences…
Specifics• „Cheaper“: sDiv has less funding than
NCEAS
• No retreat: sDiv is embedded in a permanent research centre; market place
• Part of iDiv: sDiv is desigend to form a functional unit with the iDiv centre (andreceives support)
• Steering committee: purely German; strong iDiv participation; so far no external review

Why together?
• Make a case why funding agencies shouldchannel more money into synthesis centres
• Future business models?

Ideas for collaboration
• Expert / competence databases
• Pass on information on declined workshopproposals
• Exchange survey forms and software
• Joint programs (e.g. SESYNC/sDiv/UFZ)
• Parallel twin/triplett workshops in severalcentres (theory / meta-analysis / application)
