Pastor’s Corner
Welcome one another, then, as Christ welcomed you,
for the glory of God. Romans 15:7
Welcome!
Dear Friends and Family of St. James,
Please join me in welcoming Fr. John Callanan back to St. James. He’ll be celebrating Mass here beginning July 26th through August 24th. If you wish to contact him, his email is [email protected]. I’ll be out on vacation this week and will continue to remember you as my family in my prayers as I celebrate Mass.
In Christ,
Msgr. Mike
Dear Friends and Families of St. James,
We wrapped up the Summer Institute and Summer Camp this week. It was a great month with skateboarding, cooking, basketball, math, lego, poetry, dissection, art and more.
Thank you to our directors Mrs. Schippa-Gobee and Mrs. Spencer! Thank you to all the teachers who made learning a discovery and a challenge.
The summer is a busy time as we prepare for the new school year. Thank you to all the St. James families who contribute to our school through the parish envelopes, your generosity helps make all our projects possible!
The new Transitional Kindergarten Classroom is almost ready with new desks, small chairs and a colorful rug!
Two new book series have been adopted, one for math and one for junior high language, as well as new novels for grade 5 – 8. Our Chromebooks and Google Classroom transition is in progress and has been the focus of professional development since January.
We have had a long list of plant improvements that are still in progress: repaired windows, new stair railings, stucco and paint, and the security gate.
We are working to give the ECP room a facelift with some new carpets and a new TV. We are looking for a small table size pool table and new foosball table for our after school program; if anyone has one that they would be able to donate please call the school office.
Registration is still open in grades TK - 7. Please call school for an appointment and tour. Office hours are 8am – noon all summer.
For pictures of this event and life here at St. James follow us on Facebook: St. James Catholic School Torrance and on Instagram: sjscatholicschool.
God Bless you,

Did You Know?
Homelessness has increased by 98%
in the South Bay since 2013.
Families are the fastest growing segment within this homeless population.
Want to help be part of the solution?
At Saint James Church we are looking for volunteers that want to make a difference in their community and with family homelessness. We help these families feel welcomed, loved and cared for throughout the year.
If you are interested in becoming part of this solution, we will be holding an
informational meeting on Sunday, Aug. 11
9:30-11am Parish Center Room 6
Please join us to hear how you can help cook a meal for the families’ to enjoy, eat dinner with the families, tutor children, set up beds for sleeping or
helping provide needed supplies.

Msgr. Mike and Msgr. Sork from St. John Fisher concelebrate a Mass celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Knights of Columbus. The Knights are comprised of members of St. Lawrence Martyrs, St. James and St. John Fisher parishes. The Knights of Columbus are involved in many charitable works in the South Bay.
Many were surprised at the number of ways they help support seminarians, the intellectually challenged, the parish ministries though their generous gift of time. More than just fish fries during Lent, or monthly fundraising dinners at the hall, these men are silent heroes in living out their Catholic faith. Be a Knight and find peace through service.

Gospel Meditation
Are you guilty of spiritual stockpiling?
Spiritual stockpiling isn't an endless rotation of rosaries and novenas. It's accumulating emotional "goods" to meet your needs. Perhaps it's a collection of material objects you treasure. Maybe it's a preoccupation with money. It could also be relationships, making sure there's always enough friends and connections to never really feel alone. It's our tendency to let things add up so that we won't quite need God to fulfill our inner life. Yet in this Sunday's Gospel, we have that inescapable petition from the Our Father. "Give us each day our daily bread."
This life isn't an immediate arrival. And as much as we might try to shore up possessions and pleasures, we know the journey is unpredictable. Give us this day our daily bread implies enough for the next set of steps, but not enough to stockpile. So here's the big question: Do we trust God to give us what we need? After all, "What father among you would hand his son a snake when he asks for a fish?... how much more will the Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?" At the Last Supper, Jesus said he would never leave us orphaned. God will not abandon us. And surely He wouldn't ask us to pray for what He does not intend to give.
Of course, sometimes our prayers for daily help can seem to go unanswered. Today's Gospel has advice for that, too. "I tell you... he will give up to him whatever he needs because of his persistence." Our spiritual stockpiling increases our self-reliance and decreases our openness to God's possibilities. Be persistent in your pursuit of God! Trust that He will keep His promises to provide for us, today and always.

Everyday Stewardship
After more than two decades in parish ministry, my life changed course when LPi reached out to me with an offer to do something different with my life. I hadn't been looking for a new job, but I had been working for some time to grow a ministry of speaking, writing, and consulting outside of my parish. It occurred to me I just might be throwing away a long career of stability and certainty for a situation that was new and anything but certain. My family was relying on me. I was moving from a comfort zone into a place where I was going to have to trust in God. There was the question on the surface of whether this move would work out in the end. However, the real question was whether I had the ability to put all my trust in God.
The fact that you are reading this reflection is a testa-ment that it all worked out for the best. I did place my faith and trust in God, and He came through as always. When I look back over my life and identify those times of greatest struggle, I can honestly say those were times when I trusted more in myself or let fear take over.
We all are faced with decisions in life where we are met with uncertainty or fear. Often, our stewardship is lim-ited by our inability to trust fully in God. Our comfort zones really become prisons of fear we never leave. If you find yourself unable to face the future or to make the big decisions in life, where does your trust lie? —Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS
