As you walk though the doors at Draperies and Things you immediately enter a professionally decorated show-room. To be more precise, what you are experiencing is a Hunter Douglas Gallery, just one of six located in Or-egon. The selection of window cover-ings, styles and colors can almost be overwhelming, at least until you talk with owners, Craig & Merry Reeves. Established in 1981, Draper-ies and Things is a full service Hunter Douglas Design and Ser-vice Center. The choice to part-ner with Hunter Douglas was an easy one for Craig and Merry. Not only is Hunter Douglas the oldest manufacture of window cover-ings (founded in 1919, Window Coverings since 1947), they also have a selection and a limited life-time warranty which can not be matched. They even have a pro-gram called the “Right Choice Prom-ise”. This is where you have 21 days to experience their products in your home or business, and, if for any reason you are unhappy, they will replace them and start over! For those of us who are not sure what will look best, free design consult-ing is available to all their customers. You will not feel pressured or uncom-fortable working with Craig and Merry. “We work on our clients time frame,” says Craig. “We come to their home or offi ce, consider what they want to ac-

Hunter Douglas’ innova-tive, energy-effi cient window covering products can signifi cantly reduce this energy loss, save on heating and cool-ing costs and contribute to protecting the environment. And when it comes to privacy, you choose from styles which can completely block out light to other

styles which can diminish harmful sun rays while still being able to see through them. On the safety side of things, do you still have smaller children in your home or do they visit? With Hunter Douglas, you don’t need to worry. From cordless manual and motorized operating systems, retractable lift cords, cord tension-ers and wand controls, they offer a wide array of innovative lifting system options for enhanced child and pet safety as well as especially easy operation. Craig and Merry Reeves have

spent the last 31 years serving Jackson County area residents. Their work can be seen in thousands of homes and of-fi ces not just in our immediate area, but throughout the entire Northwest. They also provide maintenance for your blinds which can include removal, cleaning, adjusting and reinstallation. Blinds and window coverings play many important roles in a living or of-fi ce setting. Our facility in Central Point is brand new with state-of-the-art technology and advances to make your visits as rapid and painless as possible. In fact, Dr. Sanford prides himself on reduc-ing the number of trips you have to make to the den-tist for any given procedure. Dr. Ross Sanford’s a w a r d - w i n n i n g dental career began in a rather unique way. Following in his father’s foot-steps as a second-generation dentist, Dr. Sanford com-pleted his require-ments and quali-fi ed as a licensed

practitioner before his fi nal year of dental school was complete, leaving his classmates in awe.

He has since gone on to prac-tice in three states as a member of half a dozen dental groups

and societies. After serving as a member of many regional and state-wide boards in Nevada, as well as a member of the Inter-national advisory committee for the Academy of LDS Dentists, he was nominated for special

honors to the Pierre Fauchard Academy International Dental Honor Organization in 2001, where he has remained as an ad-visory member since.

Dr Sanford learned to speak Spanish fl uently as a young man when he lived in Spain for 2 years. He uses that to his advantage each year as he travels to Central and South America to serve the less fortunate. His favorite activities have been to teach in Dental Schools in Hon-duras and Peru. To date he has made 10 trips to provide dentistry in sev-eral countries. In addi-tion, he serves here in

the Rogue Valley with several local charities including St. Vin-cent’s when the mobile van is in town. He is very pleased to call the Rogue Valley home now and looks forward to welcoming you to his practice.

Are you new to the area? One of the most frustrating things to overcome in a new environment is realizing you are temporarily out of your comfort zone. You need to establish new relationships with everyone from your Dentist to where you do your grocery shopping. When it comes to purchasing fi ne jewelry, most of us would obtain a refer-ral from a friend or relative. This “word of mouth” referral base is how we built Gold & Gems over the past three de-cades. Just recently, we expanded from our Ashland store to a second location in Medford. The greeting we received in Med-ford has been wonderful. This is a family company head-ed by Richard Hansen (affection-ately known by friends and family as “King Richard”). The Hansen’s employ a friendly, highly trained

team of jewelry professionals. Our team consists of Gemologists, Designers, Model makers, Gold-smiths, Platinumsmiths, Stoneset-ters and Customer Service Repre-sentatives all devoted to delivering

top quality jewelry treasures to our valued customers. Consistently voted #1 jeweler and “favorite business person” in our local community, Richard has built this business on honesty, a high code of ethics, and of course exceptional jewelry and service. Now for those three reason you

need to visit us at Gold&Gems: Reason #1`:Pricing Policy: It is widely known that jewelry pieces are infl ated, then discounted in or-der to “appear” like a low price. Our clients have become believers in the value that we offer. We have recognized successes by setting our everyday prices lower than the industries standard, and then we back up the purchases with sup-port, free sizing, polishing and all of the service oriented issues that are so important with fi ne jewelry.

Reason #2`:Quality Assurance: Every piece of jewelry that you will fi nd here has been hand-se-lected by Gold And Gems for its outstanding workmanship and the superior quality of its gems. We have built our reputation on selling only the fi nest jewelry. Whether you come into our store or shop with us online, you are a Gold And Gems customer, and you can ex-pect only the best in design, qual-ity and service.

Reason #3`: Ex-tended Warranty: As part of our Qual-ity Assurance to our customers, Gold &Gems automati-cally includes a one-year extension to the Manufacturer’s Warranty on every product we sell. I encourage you to call us at 877.917.8477, or email us using our convenient online form if you have

questions regarding fi ne jewelry, gemstones or just any issue sur-rounding the sometimes confusing world-wide-web. The hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday and the telephone number is 541-245-1585. The company’s website is www.goldandgems.com.

Our dream was to create a community in which our retired parents would not only live, but thrive. When we think now of all the lives we’ve touched by creating Mountain Meadows, it’s hard to hold back the pride.Mountain Meadows is locat-ed on a former pasture which overlooks the town of Ashland. Just to the east, it’s still farm land. It’s surrounded by the Cas-cade and Siskiyou mountain ranges which meet in SouthernOregon as if they were holding this valley with gentle arms. Ashland is a small but vibrant college town and a renowned arts community. The nearby medical services are among the states best. The dream that became Moun-tain Meadows required meticu-lous planning, not only in the excellent design and crafts-manship, but how it functions for the residents themselves. If the number of national and re-gional awards is any indication,

Mountain Meadows well may be the model for many retire-ment communities in the years to come. Mountain Meadows is an elegant mix of single family homes, cottages and condomin-

iums, supported with communi-tywide facilities such as a park, gardens, and an clubhouse with a library, theatre, fi tness cen-ter and private dining. Support services are always available, whenever they’re needed. The 30 acre community is governedby the residents themselves, as

a non-profi t. Most everyone elects to pur-chase their homes from the va-riety of sizes and prices, since home ownership does allow eq-uity accumulation for the home buyers. Homes may also be leased or rented. Depending onavailability, this gives potential community members many op-tions. If your dream is one of har-mony, comfort and beauty, we invite you to share ours. It’s ready for you now.

From earliest times the ma-jor obstacle to travel between the Rogue Valley of southern Oregon and Shasta Valley of northern Cal-ifornia has been the ridge of moun-tains called the “Siskiyous.” The name comes from the Indian word for “broom tailed horse.” Legend has it that the fi rst white man the Indians met in this area was rid-ing a horse with its tail cut off square like a broom. The white man asked the Indians for the name of the Mountains, but mis-understood their reply. He thought they were naming the mountains when actually they were talking about his horse’s tail. The name “Siskiyou” endured. The lowest and shortest passage over these mountains is a few miles west of a 1,000-foot tall rock pillar protruding above the mid point of the ridge. Known as “Pilot Rock,” this landmark aided Indians and immigrants, as well as today’s travelers, to locate the best place to cross the mountains. The discovery of gold in both Rogue and Shasta valleys in the 1840’s and 50’s brought more

people over this crossing and soon there was a community known as the village of “Siskiyou.” The peak growth of this village oc-curred during the construction of Railroad Line 3 over the moun-tains in 1887. A train tunnel, dug near the summit beginning at the southeast corner of the village, will be for-

ever famous as the site of the last great train robbery. Three D’Atremont brothers jumped on the train as it was slowly ascend-ing the steep grade north of the entrance to the tunnel. Four men were killed lead-ing authorities to one of the most extensive manhunts in U.S. history. The broth-ers were ultimately captured, tried, and

sentenced to life in prison. The Siskiyou population began to di-minish and fi nally lost its post of-fi ce status in 1920. As a young man growing up in the Rogue Valley, Don Callahan dreamed of owning a lodge in the Siskiyou Mountains. Managing a fl ock of sheep and owning little else, that dream seemed far away.

In 1944 a piece of property mid-way up the mountain on Highway 99 became available. Don sold the sheep and bought the land. After service in World War II, with the help of friends, a pick and shov-el, he chiseled out a building site from the solid rock of the hillside. In 1947 he built a wood and stone building which he named “Calla-han’s Siskiyou Lodge.” The dining room, with eight stools and fi ve tables, opened ini-tially catering to local residents who enjoyed the rustic lodge and its alpine setting. Soon interstate travelers began to appreciate the lodge as well. Anyone who ever traveled “Old 99” can still recall that well known spot. Don married Nilde Cervellin, an immigrant from Italy, in 1951. She brought the great Italian dishes to Callahan’s which are still famous today. Soon guests were standing in line! In April 1964, the original Callahan site was condemned for the new Interstate 5 right of way. Not wanting to be out of business, Don bought a larger piece of land a short distance up the highway below the summit of the Siskiyous and reopened in July of 1965. The site is actually a part of the old vil-lage of Siskiyou. Callahan’s is known throughout the West as an exceptional place to stop for great food, good drinks and good company. It is now be-ing patronized by the fourth gen-eration of original customers. Few restaurants enjoy such extensive acclaim. Ron Bergquist, who had remod-eled Nilde’s kitchen in 1960, and his wife, Donna, purchased Cal-lahan’s on January 2, 1996. Ron brings to the enterprise his exten-sive experience in developing res-taurants and hotels. He was raised in the Rogue Valley. Donna, a na-tive of Texas, brings many years of experience in marketing, promo-tion and advertising. They believe their combined skills will assure the future success and develop-ment of the “Callahan„ tradition.
