On this Fourth Sunday of Easter, we hear Jesus identify-ing himself as the Good Shepherd with a pair of “I am” statements. Jesus says: “I am the Good Shepherd who lays down his life for the sheep…I am the Good Shep-herd and I know mine and mine know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father.” Jesus’ Jewish audience would have been very familiar with the image of the Lord as their “shepherd” since the sacred writ-ings of the Law and the Prophets (and certainly Psalm 23…“The Lord is my Shepherd, there is nothing I shall want…”) make use of this analogy. In claiming that he is the “Good Shepherd,” Jesus is indicating that he is fully divine, the very Word of God who has become flesh and is dwelling among us. In referring to himself as the “Good Shepherd,” Jesus is making two important points. The first is that Jesus in not a hired hand, some-one who does not know the sheep and runs away from the flock whenever a wolf is approaching. The second point is that Jesus has other sheep that do not belong to his primary “fold,” a likely reference to all his Gentile followers who have been added to the original Jewish flock with Jesus serving as the one Good Shepherd. Je-sus is the Shepherd who is willing to risk danger and lay down his life for his sheep. Because of our baptism, we are all members of the flock of Christ, and many of us are called to be “assistant” shepherds of the Lord. Whether we are parents at home, or bosses at work, or pastoral leaders in a parish or Collaborative, we need to know our flock so well that we develop, in the words of Pope Francis, the “smell of the sheep.” The Good Shep-herd teaches us that good leaders must first be good fol-lowers, those who hear the Lord’s voice and heed his message; those who have the “smell” of the sheep themselves. May we all be faithful followers of the ris-en Lord, and, each in our own way, lead others to Jesus!

News and Notes: Next weekend the second grade chil-dren in the Religious Education program of both our parishes will celebrate their First Holy Communion. The Eucharist is the source and summit of our Catholic life. It is a meal of consecrated bread and wine that provides divine nourishment for the faithful; it is a me-morial that makes present in the here and now Christ’s once and for all sacrifice on the cross; it a Sacrament of Initiation that feeds us with no less than the real pres-ence of Christ, his very Body and Blood. Holy Com-munion bestows many graces, among them: it sepa-rates us from sin; it strengthens our charity and wipes away our venial sins; it preserves us from mortal sins; it is the supreme expression of unity in the Church; and

Here is an update on our performance in the 2015 Catholic Appeal. As of April 13, 73 St. Maria Goretti families had pledged $15,195, which is 54% of the SMG goal of $28,078; and 134 Our Lady of the As-sumption families had pledged $30,208, which is 54% of the OLA goal of $55,512. Thanks to all of our pa-rishioners who are helping us meet our fair-share as-sessment in the Catholic Appeal this year. If you have not yet made a pledge to the Catholic Appeal, pledge cards are available at the front and side entrances of our churches. Join me in making a donation to the Catholic Appeal, which funds over 50 Central Minis-tries in our local Church, ministries that are so vital in carrying out the mission that Christ has entrusted to us. PASTORAL PLANNING

“I am the good shepherd.” In the classical art there are many lovely images of Jesus, the Good Shepherd. Most of them are bucolic, placid, scenes that depict Jesus cradling a sheep in his arms or carrying a sheep on his shoulders. But shepherding is hard work, and, Jesus tells us, not without danger. A shepherd must be ready to lay down his life for his sheep. The Church needs good shepherds. Do you know a young - or not so young - man who would make a good priest? Ask for the grace to pose the question: “Have you ever thought about becoming a priest?”

4th Sunday of Easter Soap operas, reality shows and movies portray an image of love that is all but impossible: young and beautiful people, overcoming all odds, having the perfect life, and living happily ever after. People are so needy and so starved for love that even a shallow imitation of love will hold their attention and their emotions. The trage-dy occurs when that version becomes for some people a real life goal and they miss out on the real thing. It’s difficult at times to appreciate just how much God loves us. We can only think in the narrow, limited view of human weakness where love can be conditional or selfish or withheld. But there is nothing fake or arti-ficial about the love that Jesus offers. It is a love that is unconditional, forgiving, healing and life-giving. He gives it freely and willingly, proving His love for us on the cross. He patiently waits for us to say yes, to accept His gift and to love Him in return. Jesus portrays Himself as the Good Shepherd, one who lays down his life for his sheep. He will never leave us, or give up on us, or abandon us. Nothing can change the fact that God calls us His children. We share forev-er in the grace and glory of God, who creates us in His own image and gives us His life. Through Him, we are healed, forgiven and saved. We are loved just as we are, imperfect though we may be. Could God do more to prove He loves us?
