#11 Nuclear Engineering U.S. News & World Report 2018

For over 150 years, students, alumni and faculty have made outstanding achievements like

developing the artificial heart valve, TRIGA Reactor, Glucose-monitoring contact lenses,

wristband samplers that detect environmental chemicals and even a new shade of blue.

OSU continues to push the limits of research by providing students access to innovative

technology and $442 million in research funding beginning as early as their first year of

their undergraduate program.

CELLPHONE BATTERY INSULATOR

If you are holding a smart phone, you likely are holding a piece of technology invented by OSU

students. In 2010, researchers in the College of Engineering developed a metal-insulator-metal,

or MIM diodes, which is the basis for technology used in most modern-day smart phone

battery insulators.

QUANTUM COMPUTING

Quantum Spin Liquid, a new material created by OSU researchers, is a key step toward

the next generation of supercomputers. These quantum computers will be able to solve

problems well beyond the reach of existing computers while working much faster and

consuming far less energy.

ROBOTIC MOBILITY

Imagine if robots had legs and could walk anywhere people could. Agility Robotics, a company

first developed at OSU, is making robotic mobility a reality. Advanced mobility could change

the future by enabling shipping to be more automated and opening up new possibilities in

manufacturing and production.

NUCLEAR RESEARCH

Nuclear energy is the way of the future and OSU has worked for nearly two decades to make

it safer. OSU has a leading nuclear testing facility available for student research. Through

funding from the US Department of Energy, OSU developed a passive safety system that

uses natural circulation to provide cooling for nuclear plants.

WOMEN IN THE ENGINEERING PROGRAM

OSU places the majority of female students enrolled in International Year One in Engineering

positions on an OSU research team through the Office of Women and Minorities in Engineering.

LAND, SEA, SPACE AND SUN GRANT

As a leader in climate change research, OSU is also one of only two US universities to have Land, Sea, Space and Sun Grant designations. This means OSU is involved with world-changing research in all four areas, something unique among American universities. OSU students conduct environmental research in Oregon’s vast mountain ranges, forests and nearby Pacific Ocean as well as on every continent including Antarctica. OSU even has a research forest on campus which has helped OSU be recognized as No. 2 in forestry globally by the Center for World University Rankings 2018.

HANDS-ON BUSINESS RESEARCH

The College of Business Research Suite is outfitted

with cutting-edge technology, space and design to

conduct innovative research in business, market

trends and consumer insights. Apply your research

through entrepreneurship programs and access

the C2C Marketing Lab where students provide

professional market research and consulting services

to the business community. Students can also

participate in the Advantage Accelerator, a unique

program designed to assist startups in all stages of

their growth. You will work directly with innovators

and entrepreneurs to explore markets, develop

products, and obtain customers.

HEALTHCARE INDUSTRY

OSU is a leader in the healthcare field. We train the

next generation of public health and human sciences

professionals, and advance science through research,

scholarship and practicum opportunities.

It pays to be an OSU grad. OSU alumni who graduated with a bachelor’s degree are in the top 20% best paid graduates in the US.

PERSONALIZED CAREER SUPPORT

The key to launching your career is having a strong support

system. OSU’s dedicated staff of career advisors provides

multiple free career services, including:

• Internship and job placement assistance• Career development workshops• Résumé review and interview practice• Career counseling• Professional career photoshoot • Networking with industry professionals• Handshake App – 5,000 jobs posted daily for students

INTERNSHIPS DRIVEN BY INDUSTRY

OSU offers several support services to find internship

placements, including MECOP, which places students in

paid internships in the fields of engineering, tech and business

with top companies like Boeing, Intel, HP and Oracle.

JOBS ON CAMPUS

International students are eligible to work on campus up to 20

hours a week earning at least $11.25 per hour. In an academic

year, you can earn an estimated $8,100 to help offset your

educational costs in a variety of positions including research and

laboratory assistantships as well as positions in business and

special projects. These work experiences enhance your résumé

and give you more opportunities to practice your English.
