PRE-ARRIVAL In this section you’ll find a list of activities to complete before you join us in September.

There’ll be some costs incurred during the course. The course will pay for materials used during inductions, specifically during sewing and pattern cutting inductions. Some materials, such as basic paper and cartridge paper, will be provided free of charge.

Once sewing and pattern cutting inductions are over you’ll have to pay for calico and fabric materials, as well as any specialist materials which you might require. For example, design and portfolio presentations and professional printing, you’ll have to pay for yourself.

As a Fashion student you’ll build up a collection of materials which you prefer to work with as the course progresses. The basic materials list below is a starting point from which to build your own specialist materials or tool kit.

Sarah Blake,Fashion, UCA Epsom

“The BA (Hons) Fashion course at UCA Epsom is an award-winning course with graduates winning national GFW awards and progressing to MA courses, in addition to creative jobs in the fashion industry due to their experimental and creative approach. The work produced is at the higher end comparable with the best courses in the London area.”

Elinor Renfrew, External Examiners’ Report 2014

In the past, the course has made overseas trips to Paris and Barcelona. There is a charge for students to join but trips are not compulsory.

To give you an idea, the Paris trip cost £270 for travel and hotel, and the Barcelona trip £315 for travel and hotel.

Field trips inside the UK are sometimes free, but you’ll be expected to pay the cost of travel associated with these trips, such as travelling to London for an exhibition or going on location to draw.

Object Trouvé (found object)

Throughout the last and current centuries, artists and designers have been inspired by undistinguished - often modified - objects that are not normally considered art or design, because they already have a non-art function. It’s the artist or designer’s aim to question any given form or object and to translate his/her answers to these questions into a series of new and needed solutions, in the form of contemporary products and artefacts.

For example, artist Marcel Duchamp perfected the concept when he made a series of ‘ready mades’, and Pop artist Andy Warhol painted Coca Cola bottles and Campbell’s Soup cans. Composers use ‘found sound’ in their compositions - such as the likes of John Cage or The Slant, and fashion designers such as Nicolas Ghesquière (from Balenciaga) or rising talent such as Michel Van de Ham create innovative fashion collections inspired by found and mundane gizmos.

Design Task:

Find an object in your immediate surroundings that’s used in everyday life - the backyard of your garden, the street, a market or your friend’s bedroom and so on.

Through observational drawing and photography, explore your chosen object. Think about texture, form, negative space, different scales, details. Use your explorations to inform design ideas for either womenswear or menswear.

Requirements:

-A minimum of eight observational drawings and eight photographs -Sketch one observational drawing per page-Create a series of design ideas that have been directly inspired by each observational drawing and/or photography – a minimum of three design ideas per observational drawing. Include fabric swatches too.

SUMMER PROJECT

3D Observational Project

Fashion design ideas and concepts can be influenced and developed by a variety of sources - visual imagery, costume, architecture, objects, art and so on. This summer project will start you on your journey to becoming a designer by engaging you in the design process.

Choose a 3D object, and through a series of observational drawings using a variety of media, show that you’ve analysed and understood the object.

Experiment with a range of media and explore different drawing styles from inspirational artists.

Please work in an A4 /A3 sketchbook (cartridge paper).

Have fun with the summer project; there are no restrictions to your creativity or experimentation. You can design conceptually or commercially – most importantly, ‘think outside the box’.
