Welcome from the DirectorWelcome to NUI Galway’s Adult and Continuing Education programmes. In this prospectus, you will find all the advice and information you need on studying at NUI Galway. We offer an extensive range of part-time programmes including Access and Foundation courses, Certificate, Diploma, Degree and Masters awards. At NUI Galway we recognise the central role that lifelong learning plays in the development of individuals, communities and our region. We recognise the importance of access to education for all groups irrespective of geographic location. Each year the profile of part-time programmes develops to include courses which respond to the up-skilling educational needs of adult learners. Programmes available through the Adult and Continuing Education Office cover the areas of Science & Technology Studies, Business, Humanities and the Social Sciences. All our tutors are experienced educators and have a particular interest in working with adult learners, do not hesitate in contacting them with your queries.

A large number of programmes are offered via classroom-based teaching at the NUI Galway campus and in a number of outreach locations within the Border, Midland and Western Region. An increasing number of programmes are also offered via online or blended learning requiring class attendance on a monthly basis ensuring flexibility and access for learners to a wide selection of courses.

A range of specialist support services are also offered which assist students progress through their chosen programme. These supports coupled with the assistance of your lecturers and staff of the Adult and Continuing Education Office aim to assist you in your study programme.

WHAT CAN I STUDY?

At NUI Galway we firmly believe that education and learning extends from the cradle to the grave. In browsing through this prospectus we would like you to explore what we at NUI Galway can offer you, a potential adult learner. Whether you want to study full-time or part-time, for personal pleasure or to enhance your career prospects, whether you live near Galway or further away, whether you have a little or a lot of formal education up to now - keep reading, investigate the possibilities, consider which path you might like to take, consider which option suits you.

A wide range of part-time programmes are on offer. These programmes cover a variety of different subject areas such as English Literature, Archaeology, Irish Music Studies, Business Studies and Management, Information Technology, Technology Management, Social Care, Languages, Community Development, Training and Education, Science and Technology Studies. Many of these programmes lead to a recognised NUI award at Certificate, Diploma, Degree or Masters levels.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE?

The programmes on offer vary in terms of level of award (whether Certificate, Diploma or other) and also in duration. Certificate programmes usually last one year. A Diploma programme usually lasts two years, a Degree programme can take four years, while a Masters can take two to three years to complete.

This prospectus introduces you to the range of programmes available and gives contact details for all programme coordinators. If you are unsure about the best programme for your needs or you would like more information, you can contact the relevant course coordinator directly.

We also run a series of short liberal education courses extending across a wide range of disciplines, which do not lead to an award. These short courses consist of eight to ten weeks of lectures in areas such as Philosophy, Art History, Creative Writing, Film Studies, History, English Literature, Environmental Studies and many others. Take a look at the short course description on page �7 of this prospectus for more details.

HOW AND WHERE DO I STUDY?

Adult education programmes are offered in different ways at NUI Galway. As an adult learner you can study on a part-time or a full-time basis. This prospectus concentrates mainly on the part-time courses available in NUI Galway; however, if you are considering returning to full-time education, check out questions �� and �4 in the FAQ for some introductory information.

CLASSROOM-BASED PROGRAMMES

Classes for most part-time programmes take place in the evenings or at weekends, while a small number of part-time programmes are offered during the day. We have both classroom-based and blended-learning programmes. For our classroom-based programmes you attend lectures each week in NUI Galway or at our outreach locations. As well as the time spent in the classroom, you also spend time studying on your own and completing assignments.

BLENDED-LEARNING PROGRAMMES

Certain programmes are taught using blended learning, which allows students to study at times that suit them best. Blended learning is simply an extension of what was traditionally called distance learning. It is a combination of self-instructional learning materials, traditional face-to-face lectures and workshops, online discussions, self-assessment activities, assignments and formal examinations. Students who enrol on a blended-learning programme receive a set of self-paced, self-instructional learning materials, in hard copy. This material is also available online over the Internet using our designated learning portals.

When a blended-learning programme involves online activities, e-tutors are assigned to each module and are available to provide help and feedback on your online classroom activities. It is also possible to discuss course topics with other students on a virtual discussion board. You don’t need to have IT skills when you enrol on a blended-learning course; course tutors and the programme coordinator will provide training and support when you commence the programme.

Course fees generally cover tuition costs and all course materials. However, for certain programmes, you may be required to purchase additional textbooks.

OUTREACH PROGRAMMES AT NUI GALWAY

Responding to the need for local education in communities all around Connacht, NUI Galway has developed a number of outreach programmes. An increasing number of these programmes are available at outreach locations in Counties Clare and Donegal and also in Counties Offaly, Westmeath, Longford and Laois. Students can attend lectures at these outreach facilities in their own locality, giving them an opportunity to talk face-to-face with the tutors and fellow students.

St. Angela’s College in Sligo, which is an affiliate college of NUI Galway, offers a number of part-time programmes from its campus in the North-West. Check locally with the coordinator at St. Angela’s for course details.

HOW MUCH TIME DO I NEED AND WHAT AWARD DO I RECEIVE?

We are conscious of the many demands placed on adult learners and as a result all new courses are developed on a modular basis. This means that students are provided with manageable amounts of learning to enable them to combine their work and family commitments with their studies.

As a general rule, it is recommended that students on classroom-based programmes spend at least one hour studying or researching at home for every hour spent in class. This may increase coming up to examination time.

Certificate programmes typically require you to attend classes one evening per week for one year. Diploma programmes typically require you to attend classes one or two evenings per week for two years. On many programmes you can receive a Certificate when you successfully complete the first year, and you then have the option of continuing on to complete the Diploma programme in the second year.

Degree programmes continue over four years and require a high level of commitment from students. As a degree student you are required to attend classes up to three times per week with occasional classes scheduled for Saturday mornings. Masters programmes, a number of which are available on a part-time basis, vary in duration and attendance requirements depending on the mode of study involved. However, most Masters programmes take two to three years and you must submit a research dissertation in the final year.

The amount of study time involved in a blended-learning programme depends entirely on the individual student. Students complete each module at their own pace. Students must also allow time to complete assignments. Most blended-learning programmes involve attendance at workshops or classroom-based lectures at different stages during the academic year. The number and duration of these activities tend to vary across the different programmes.

APPLYING FOR A PART-TIME PROGRAMME

The part-time programmes offered by the University vary each year. Many courses are offered on a cyclical basis - every two to four years - while others accept students on an annual basis. If you are interested in any of the programmes listed in this booklet, contact the relevant programme coordinator to ensure that your chosen programme is on offer this year.

ASSESSMENT AND EXAMINATIONS

Assessment is required for all programmes that lead to a Certificate, Diploma, Degree or a Masters. Course assessment is generally a combination of continuous assessment, including written essays, written examinations, projects or practical assignments, for example, field trips. Some programmes that do not lead to an award, for example the short, non-accredited courses, do not involve any assessment.

I NEVER COMPLETED THE LEAVING CERTIFICATE

Don’t let that stop you. At NUI Galway, we have designed courses for adults with limited prior education who would like to enter mainstream University programmes. These Returning to Learning courses provide an alternative pathway to third-level education for those whose background education was limited by socio-economic circumstances and/or educational disadvantage, but who want to continue their education at third level, on either a full-time and or a part-time basis.

If you have a limited educational background, check out the Returning to Learning courses on page 56 and 57 in this prospectus. These programmes provide students with introductory-level University courses as a starting point to continuing their studies to a higher level at NUI Galway.

Participants who successfully complete the Access programme are eligible to apply for direct entry to full-time University degree courses in the College of Arts, Social Sciences and Celtic Studies, College of Science, College of Engineering and Informatics and the College of Business, Public Policy and Law. A similar Foundation Course in Science, Technology and Engineering and another in Business Studies is offered in conjunction with the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology. These courses are particularly valuable as a preparatory course for students interested in progressing to further studies in Science, Engineering, Information Technology or Commerce.

STUDENT SUPPORT

Many of the students registering for adult education programmes may have been away from formal education for some time. Students sometimes doubt their own ability to succeed, or find submitting assignments and doing written examinations a very daunting prospect.

The staff at the Adult and Continuing Education Office are very aware of these anxieties and our lecturers and tutors are conscious of the difficulties that students experience in returning to education. They are fully supportive and are there to assist you in any way possible. Help is there when you need it - all you have to do is ask.

Additional study, examination techniques, applied writing, reading skills and memory technique workshops are generally offered to students on our Diploma and Degree programmes. These are provided outside of regular class hours and assist students in preparing course assignments and preparing for end-of-semester examinations. While these workshops are optional, students are encouraged to attend as many as possible, particularly during the first year of their study programme. Students who attend these workshops regularly comment on how useful the workshops are, particularly in providing valuable study tips and techniques.

MAKING YOUR DECISION

If you decide to enrol on a Certificate, Diploma or Degree programme, it will require immense time commitment on your part. There is also a financial commitment; as well as your tuition fee, you need to consider the cost of course materials in some cases, childcare expenses, time off work and other general, associated costs.

It is important that you spend time researching the options available and exploring the course most suited to your educational needs.

You might want to consider some of the following when you are making your choice:

• Research which course suits your talents, experience and interests before you begin studying• Consider what pace of study (full-time, part-time or modular) suits your needs best• Read the relevant section of this information booklet• Contact the programme coordinator listed if you require further course details or perhaps set up an appointment to meet them if you wish to discuss the programme in person• Attend any information evenings that are provided by the Adult and Continuing Education Office on its programmes. Information evenings for entry in September of each academic year usually take place from April to June of that year

A quota of places is reserved each year in the Colleges of Arts, Social Sciences and Celtic Studies, Science, Engineering and Informatics, Business, Public Policy and Law and in the College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences.

If you are interested in postgraduate study, NUI Galway offers a wide range of graduate level Diploma programmes, Masters Degrees, and Doctoral Research Degrees in each Faculty. Almost a quarter of all registered full-time students at NUI Galway are studying on postgraduate programmes and the University is deeply committed to further developing postgraduate teaching and research.

While the majority of these programmes are geared for full-time students, part-time study options are also available on certain programmes and you can contact the course coordinator for further information.

There are two types of postgraduate degree programmes on offer at NUI Galway:

Postgraduate Study at NUI Galway

When you enrol on a part-time programme leading to a Certificate, Diploma, Degree or Masters Award, you receive a student identity card which provides you with access to the following University facilities.

JAMES HARDIMAN LIBRARY

Adult Education students will have full access to the James Hardiman Library. Term opening hours are: Monday – Friday 08:�0 – 22:00, Saturday 08:�0 – �7:�0 and Sunday �0:00 – �7:�0, with some additional hours leading up to and during examinations.

The James Hardiman Library is situated in front of the concourse. It has a wide collection of books available, most of which can be borrowed. The library also has resources such as academic papers and journals, many of which can be accessed online. Books can generally be borrowed for a period of two weeks with an opportunity to extend the loan period. Other special collection books are on desk reserve. This means that they are available only for a shorter period (e.g. one hour, three hours or one day) and must be perused in the library itself.

The library is spread over three floors and has a wide range of services including archives, special collections, microform/microfiche, photocopiers and computer suites. On the first floor you will find books and journals covering a variety of subjects: arts, commerce, social science and the library’s audiovisual collection, including DVDs and videos. The second floor houses the science, technology and computing collection.

There are staff members on each floor of the library to assist you in your search and you will find study spaces on all floors and further study spaces in the basement reading room. The library also provides a browsing room that contains fictional books, magazines, and local and national newspapers. Have a look at the library’s website on www.library.nuigalway.ie for more information on the full range of its services to students, including online services.

Students registered on blended-learning programmes or students who are unable to access the library on a regular basis, can use the library’s off-campus services which allow access to a wide range of electronic resources and reference material from home using an internet connection. To use this service you need to know your student number and library pin or computer suite password. Simply follow the link to the electronic databases from the library website.

The library also provides tours at the beginning of the academic year that will introduce you to all the facilities in the library. Check the library website or inquire at the library for more details. Further training opportunities on specific aspects of the library, for example carrying out research in the library and exploring the library catalogue, are available on a regular basis throughout semesters one and two.

CAREERS DEVELOPMENT CENTRE

The Careers Development Centre offers a comprehensive range of guidance and information services to all the students who attend NUI Galway, assisting them in the management of their own career development.

The information room provides information on areas such as postgraduate study and funding, particular occupations, further study and work worldwide. Employer information, computers with Internet access, an audio-visual section, career CD-ROMs, psychometric tests and photocopying facilities are examples of some of the services provided for mature students.

Seminars are held on specific career areas, employability skills and postgraduate study. Seminars are also organised for particular focus groups, for example, mature students. The computerised guidance service includes access to a virtual careers library via the website, www.nuigalway.ie/careers, where you will find further career information and useful contact details.

SPORTING FACILITIES

NUI Galway offers a wide choice of sporting activities to its students. The University has opened a new 6,500 sq ft sports complex, located by the Quincentennial Bridge. This modern sports facility includes a six lane, 25 metre swimming pool, dedicated squash and racquetball courts, national league basketball arena and sports hall. The sports complex also houses an impressive cardiovascular gym, two fitness studios suitable for aerobic training and a competition-style climbing wall. Saunas and steam rooms are also situated within the complex. There are regular classes where you can acquire new expertise, or improve existing skills, with professional tuition. If you are interested in competitive activities, intervarsity sport may be of special interest.

The new sports complex offers a balance for the students of the University to their academic study by providing them with an opportunity to engage in recreational and sporting activity. As a registered student at NUI Galway you can avail of reduced membership of the University gym and leisure facilities.

STUDENT SOCIETIES

The University is also home to over 82 active societies, covering a large range of sporting and non-sporting extra-curricular interest and activities. Societies include Canoeing, Rowing, Basketball, Photography, Hill Walking, Debating and many others. Society spaces are available in Áras na Mac Léinn and include performance spaces, meeting rooms, acoustic rooms, a dance studio, an art room, screening rooms, a dark room, computer and editing suites. These are all available for student use.

Participating in a society allows students to learn new skills, explore their interests, create a community of friends with similar interests and goals and, of course, have great fun. Being a member of a society also gives you access to high-profile speakers, educators and potential employers. It gives you an opportunity to unleash your creative potential. There is literally something for everyone.

IT FACILITIES

Registered students at NUI Galway may use the computer network. There are approximately �,600 PCs which are available for student use in general access and departmental PC suites located across the campus. These computers provide access to a large number of general and specialist software applications as well as Internet and email facilities. When you enrol on an adult education programme, you are provided with the access details required to log in to the computers in these PC suites. If you have any difficulties with this, you can contact the information desk at the User Support Centre, Information Solutions and Services. Students will also be given their own email account as NUI Galway students as well as access to the University’s wireless service.

PHOTOCOPYING FACILITIES

Photocopiers that are located in college buildings and the main library are operated by photocopying cards, which can be purchased from dispensers. Printing is charged on a per-page basis.

CAR PARKING

NUI Galway enjoys a central location in Galway city and with this come parking restrictions which are in place on the campus from 08:�0 to �7:�0 Monday to Friday. The parking management system is enforced by clamping during these hours. You are strongly advised to park only in designated parking spaces. Registered students are provided with a parking permit which allows students to park in specific places. There are also a number of Pay & Display places located across the campus for student, staff and guest use.

ACCESS PROGRAMME — MICHELLE MITCHELL

I applied to do the Access Programme because I was not sure if I would be able to successfully complete a degree, considering my not too successful school life. It was my way of seeing if I was in fact capable. Although I was nervous initially, the tutors were wonderful and extremely dedicated to helping each student, by providing various tools such as Study Skills and Academic Writing, together with a wide range of subjects. During this time, many friendships were forged and have remained to this day. Not only was I successful in obtaining my place on the BA Connect with Children Studies, but I gained so much confidence knowing that my potential was being realised. I continue to help with the Access programme in any way I can, from talking to prospective students at Open Days or speaking at information sessions. I enjoy my undergraduate course immensely as well as the general university experience, which includes being actively involved in the Mature Students Society. My future plans are to undertake a PhD in Family & Child research. If you are thinking about returning to education, my advice is “Do it!” There is an exciting and rewarding experience for you.

DIPLOMA IN LEAN & QUALITY SYSTEMS — PADRAIG COYNE

Following a ten year break from college, I decided to upskill by completing the Diploma in Lean & Quality Systems so that I could change career from that of construction management. The broad range of topics covered in the syllabus has given me a great understanding of how the different lean principles are interlinked and how they are applied in a variety of industries. I feel the workplace project provided an ideal opportunity to study how a manufacturing firm could operate from a lean perspective, whilst also contributing to their operations. Not alone am I working towards the Diploma award, but the add-on Six Sigma Green Belt certification which is part of the course is a well recognised qualification which makes the programme high-value for me. I always found the course coordinators and lecturers very helpful and accessible; and the lecturers’ practical experience of industry was especially insightful for students like me from a non-manufacturing background.

BA DEGREE — CRISTABELLE SEGA

Going to University is never an easy decision when you have work and family commitments. Never-the-less it is rewarding and the end of each term brings with it an immense sense of achievement. When I decided to do my degree, I was working full time and I had a nine month old baby. My partner and I worked on opposite shifts to take care of my daughter, and we both worked nights. Time becomes a valuable asset when you are studying and good time management is key if you want to succeed. It is amazing where you will find a few hours, and being organised helps enormously. This means when the unexpected happens such as a sick child, you can still keep on top of it all. The support network in adult education is excellent. Although I could have switched to the day-time after the diploma cycle, I realised how much more comfortable I felt around others in similar positions to myself. There is a great sense of camaraderie amongst us, and everyone is happy to support one another. Certainly it would have been easier to do this before I reached my thirties, but my level of commitment and desire to learn far outweighs the age obstacle. It is not something that is regretted, indeed my plans are to continue in my studies at the end of this degree. My advice? Don’t be daunted, you will never regret the decision.

The Diploma/Certificate in Community Development Practice is a part-time programme, designed to enable community activists to gain a thorough understanding of community development. It equips students with the practical skills necessary to work effectively in development work.

The Diploma/ Certificate in Community Development Practice is designed to meet the needs of adult learners returning to education and to enable those working in a professional and/ or voluntary capacity in the fields of community development to access third level education.

Participants will be required to reach a pass standard in each assignment. Students on the Diploma programme will be required to work on a practical project on behalf of a community of choice. Students will be assigned a project advisor who will support them directly with this project work. These projects will provide a valuable opportunity for the transfer of skills to groups in relation to planning local development projects. They will also facilitate the involvement of other members of community organisations in the activities of the Diploma programme.


There are many career opportunities open to graduates of the Certificate and/or Diploma in Community Development Practice programme as it offers a solid practical and theoretical understanding of the community development sector. The programme aims to equip participants with a sound knowledge of Ireland’s archaeological heritage from the earliest settlers to the medieval period. The programme consists of lectures, fieldwork and project work. The programme offers a general introduction to the field monuments and material culture of some nine millennia of the Irish past. Participants are also introduced to the discipline of archaeology, its historical development worldwide, theoretical perspectives and methodologies. They will examine the archaeology of Ireland in general and explore the prehistoric and historic archaeology of human settlement in their region.

COURSE OUTLINE:

There are six modules on offer within the diploma structure. Students are required to complete three modules each year. Year 1: Introduction to Archaeology: This module will introduce students to the discipline of Archaeology and provide the theoretical and methodological foundations for later courses. The first weeks are devoted to ‘Exploring the Past’, a series of lectures designed to introduce students to modern archaeology, its historical development, aims and practices. This is followed in the latter weeks by lectures devoted to ‘Fundamentals of Archaeological Explanation’, where students are introduced to the techniques involved in archaeological analyses.

The Archaeology of Prehistoric Ireland: This module provides an introduction to the prehistory of Ireland. The first lectures deal with the first settlers in Ireland, the arrival of farming and megalithic tombs. This is followed by lectures considering the many developments that marked the transition to the Bronze Age, from the introduction of metallurgy to changes in the structure of society and ritual practices. The arrival of Celtic influences to Ireland and the process of Celticisation in the LateBronze Age and Iron Age are explored.

The Archaeology of Historic Ireland: This module introduces Irish archaeology from the arrival of Christianity in the 5th century AD to the end of the medieval period. The weeks of ‘Early Medieval and Viking Ireland’ looks at the period between AD 400-�000, covering topics such as settlement, economy and craft, the early Christian Church, and Ireland and the Viking world. This is followed by lectures on Anglo-Norman and Gaelic Ireland that deal with the medieval period in Ireland, covering such areas as the archaeology of medieval castles, churches and towns.

Year 2: Approaching the Past: This module deals with the different ways that archaeologists use archaeological evidence to explain past societies and social change, as well as a field project where students learn the fundamentals of recording archaeological monuments.Prehistoric Landscapes: This module focuses on the prehistoric landscapes of the region in which the diploma is delivered and may include topics such as the megalithic tombs of the Burren and the Late Bronze Age chiefdom of Dún Aonghasa.Historic Landscapes: This module focuses on the historic-period landscapes of the region in which the diploma is delivered and may include topics such as Christianity in the west, secular settlement, and the towns, castles and other remnants of the Anglo-Norman and medieval Gaelic period.A number of field trips are scheduled throughout both years, designed to complement each module.

The Diploma in English Literature aims to introduce students to the fundamentals of literary analysis. Students learn to deal with issues of genre and style, to apply diverse critical perspectives and to recognise the ways in which literature functions in society. Through a detailed study of selected poets, the programme explores relations between form, content and culture in poetic art. In its focus on drama, the programme analyses selected plays paying close attention to issues such as theatrical practice, spectatorship and the social function of theatre. The Diploma programme also introduces students to the world of fiction, to its formal and thematic properties and looks at facets of fiction writing such as characterisation, plot, setting and diction.

The Diploma in History seeks to analyse and explain the development of human society over time. The history modules are very broad, covering a range of chronological periods, the historical experience of different countries, major themes in human society and the processes of cultural change.

The Diploma aims to introduce students to the nature of historical knowledge; the key role of history in shaping social and political attitudes; the significance of history in building our perceptions of ourselves and others; major historiographical controversies and debates; and recent advances and changes in the study of history.

Irish traditional music, song and dance are an integral part of Irish cultural life and identity. This programme provides an interdisciplinary introduction to the ways in which traditional Irish music, song and dance have contributed to the creation of identity amongst Irish communities on the island of Ireland and beyond. A practical workshop element in sean-nós singing and dancing, along with insights from literature, television and film, enhances the learning experience. Participants will gain an understanding of the ways in which Irish performers have been actively involved in imagining and re-imagining Ireland from the eighteenth century through to the present.

COURSE OVERVIEW

This postgraduate certificate course provides initial training, specialised knowledge and skills needed for graduates who wish to teach English as a Foreign Language. Successful course participants are awarded a Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language by the National University of Ireland, Galway.

Successful completion of this course enables graduates to proceed to the postgraduate Higher Diploma in TEFL.

COURSE OVERVIEW

The Diploma in French is designed for students with an interest in French and a wish to acquire a high level of communication skills in the language (oral and written) through a variety of practical language exercises. Great emphasis is placed on continuous assessment and feedback to students. Students will also study major issues in the contemporary French-speaking world, such as immigration, education, culture and politics.

The programme aims to equip students with appropriate written and oral skills in French. The French native teachers will use the communicative method of modern language instruction. He/she will gradually introduce the relevant points of grammar to the students and show how these are applied to written and oral structures. By the end of each week, term and year, students should be able to converse and comprehend a variety of topics and situations that are normally encountered in everyday situations in a contemporary Francophone environment.

COURSE OVERVIEW

Acadamh na hOllscolaíochta Gaeilge is now offering a Diploma in Irish (Level A2) and Diploma in Irish (Level B2) to all students and staff within the National University of Ireland, Galway and in other centres outside of the University.


The Diploma in Irish (Level A2) is suitable for students who have no prior knowledge of the language and the Diploma in Irish (Level B2) is suitable for students who have some prior knowledge of Irish, but who may not have had the opportunity to use it in some time. The course syllabi are based on A2 and B2 levels and standards established by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

Diploma in Irish (Level A2) - There are no formal entry requirements for this course. Applications are welcome from those interested in gaining a basic knowledge of the language. Diploma in Irish (Level B2) - this course is suitable for people who have a prior knowledge of thelanguage (gained through the Irish educational system, for example). Each applicant must complete the Language Placement Test.

COURSE OUTLINE:

The Diploma in Irish (Level A2) provides a basic knowledge and understanding of Irish to students who have no prior knowledge of the language, while the level B2 programme aims to develop and foster language skills of students who have prior knowledge of the language. Throughout the course the student’s communicative skills will be developed and (s)he will be equipped with the ability to function through the medium of Irish in a range of basic, everyday, realistic situations. Authentic communicative activities will be used (i.e. television and radio programmes, newspapers, etc.) so that the student will gain an insight into everyday usage of the language.

Both diplomas are delivered part-time over two years. Each academic year is divided into two parts called semesters. A semester consists of ten teaching weeks. Students will attend a three hour class once a week over two academic years and will also spend one weekend in the second semester of both years in the Gaeltacht. There is an additional fee for the weekend course. The courses consists of four modules. Students must successfully complete all modules over the two-year period to be awarded a Diploma.

COURSE OVERVIEW

The aim of the Diploma programme is to equip students with appropriate communicative skills in German language – listening, written and oral – and to introduce students to German culture. German is spoken not only in Germany, Austria and Switzerland but in many other parts of Central and Eastern Europe. As well as providing a grounding in the language, the two-year programme will give students deeper insights into the vital role of German in Central Europe’s intellectual, cultural and economic life.

Students will begin with the basic elements of German grammar and vocabulary and will progress to the study of a selection of social and cultural issues in the contemporary German-speaking world. In each term students will target specific topics, communication situations and language skills that are typically needed in a modern German-speaking environment. There are six modules on offer throughout the two-year programme. Students must successfully complete three modules per year. Considerable emphasis is placed on teacher-student interaction in small groups, on continuous assessment of language work (written and spoken), and on providing support and feedback to students.

COURSE OVERVIEW

The Diploma in Italian introduces students to the basics of the Italian language and assists them in developing their language competence in relation to the common situations of everyday life. The course concentrates on all four main language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) and uses authentic material, carefully selected, to provide a gradual introduction to the structures and functions of the language. In addition, a cultural module will introduce students to aspects of contemporary Italian culture, including the main trends in Italian art, cinema and history and will offer lectures on a variety of topics, from different regions in Italy to wine-tasting sessions.

The Diploma in Italian is open to everybody and is designed for those who have no previous knowledge of the language. The Diploma in Italian will be offered in two modes from September 20�2 (i.e. a classroom-based programme and an online programme) to accommodate students who live at a distance from the University and are not able to attend classes on a weekly basis.

The online programme is particularly suitable for students who need flexibility in their time and mode of study and/or live away from Galway. Basic computer skills are sufficient for the online students including an ability to download and upload files, navigate websites, use emails and Skype-style applications. An introductory on-campus session at the beginning of the course will explain in very simple terms how to use these applications and will take students through all steps necessary to become familiar with these learning tools.

This Diploma in Scientific Studies (Gemmology) provides an introduction to the science of gemmology for people with a general interest in gemstones, as well as for those working in the jewellery and related trades. The programme aims to provide students with a broad introduction to the study of gemstones. It teaches a range of laboratory–based techniques used to identify gemstones and provides students with hands-on experience in identification protocols using a comprehensive collection of gemstones. The programme also includes studies of typical geological settings of gemstones through lectures and field trips to Connemara.

The Diploma in Scientific Studies (Geology) provides an introduction to the science of geology for people with a general interest in the natural environment. It explores key questions such as: how did the Earth and the landscape form; what is a geological hazard; what are geological materials and how are they exploited; and what effect does that have on the environment? The programme aims to provide the student with a broad introduction to the study of the Earth and hands-on practical experience of the techniques employed within the field of geology. The principles of geology are covered using case studies and physical materials from around the world and the course includes field trips to see in-situ geology in an Irish context.

Students attend for three hours per week over two years, for a total of four semesters. The programme usually comprises one lecture and one practical per week and two field trips per semester, lasting usually for a half-day or a full day. Students must attend at least one field trip each semester.

The programme in Science and Technology Studies is a part-time programme which focuses on the knowledge and skill requirements of high-tech industries. Its modular structure is designed with flexibility in mind, enabling students to balance study with work and other commitments and to accumulate credits over a time frame that suits their lifestyle. Learning is delivered via a blend of distance and online resources, on-campus tutorials and labs, and company-based projects.

This one-year, part-time Diploma course aims to develop students’ knowledge around the issues and opportunities associated with achieving and maintaining environmental sustainability in industry and business sectors. It also aims to develop the associated technical and soft skills.

This programme focuses on the topical area of Lean, Six Sigma, Business Process Modelling and Continuous Improvement. Green belt material is covered to enable students to top off their academic award with an industry-standard professional qualification. This programme is delivered via blended learning teaching methodologies. This course offers students medium-term up-skilling for career advancement or specialisation and/or cross-skilling for career change or cross-team roles. COURSE OUTLINE:

Year � of the programme is offered in various centres around the country where students will be supported by local tutors. The centres are Galway, Portarlington and Carlow (centre availability is subject to sufficient numbers). The first year provides a general introduction to the field of health studies through three course components: course modules, a seminar and work placement. Students receive interactive materials for home study and attend a workshop for each module. Students also attend one weekend seminar in NUI Galway and complete a supervised work placement in a social care setting.

As with the first year, the second year of the course is provided through interactive distance education materials for home study with local workshops, a seminar and work placement. Year 2 is offered through various centres with local tutor support. This second year provides students with further skills as well as introducing the theoretical ideas that underpin social care work and service provision. Students may leave the programme on the successful completion of Year 2 and graduate with a Diploma in Arts (Social Care).

Year � builds on Years � and 2 with further theoretical exploration of social care work and service provision through interactive distance education materials, workshops and work placement. The core competencies required for working in the social care field will be examined and linked to their application in a workplace setting. This year is offered at NUI Galway only.

Similarly, the final year is offered at NUI Galway only. This final year of the B.A. in Social Care provides a selection of optional modules focused on working with specific population groups: children and youth, people with disabilities and older people. In addition, a dissertation on a particular area of social care work will be undertaken, supported by a named individual supervisor.

The B.A. Degree in Training and Education is offered by the Open Learning Centre, a unit of Adult and Continuing Education at NUI Galway. The programme is offered as a part-time, distance learning programme and is aimed at people who are working, or are interested in working, as trainers, tutors, instructors or educators. COURSE OVERVIEW

The Postgraduate Diploma/Certificate in Practice-Based Play Therapy has been developed to meet the identified needs of practitioners in the play therapy sector who wish to pursue accredited programmes of study in a flexible manner, complementing and supporting continued employment. This part-time blended learning programme of study builds on practical experience, enhancing the learner’s skills through exposure to theory, policy, research and work-based learning opportunities. The course content has been developed in conjunction with The Academy of Play and Child Psychotherapy (APAC).


The programme will be particularly suitable for those wishing to add therapeutic play skills to their existing psychological therapy skills, and/or those working with children including:• Counsellors• Psychotherapists• Psychologists• Teachers and/or other learning support staff• Occupational Therapists• Nurses• Social Workers• Practitioners in the play therapy sector

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants must be aged 2� years or over by January �st of the calendar year of entry, with up to two years’ experience working with children in the sector. Applicants should normally possess a �st or 2nd class honours degree at undergraduate level in one of a range of relevant subject areas which could include psychology, education, childhood studies, or social work; or have a recognised academic professional qualification in a health, social services or education-related field such as Nursing, Psychology, Social Work, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Counselling, or Teaching. In exceptional circumstances, candidates without a degree but with significant experience of working in this field who produce a satisfactory portfolio of evidence demonstrating their ability to study at this level, may be accepted.

The Diploma in Practice-Based Play Therapy is designed with the following aims: to provide an opportunity for experienced practitioners and graduates with relevant professional qualifications to study play therapy from both non-directive and directive perspectives at an advanced level fostering the knowledge, therapeutic insight, clinical judgment and skills necessary to challenge boundaries at the forefront of the discipline. It also aims to enable the participants to study and explore the field of play therapy in a way that incorporates the therapeutic perspective meaningfully into other types of work with a wider client group. Another aim is to provide the participants with sufficient skills to obtain work as professional Play Therapists. Other aims are to facilitate expressive collaboration with fellow students and with external agencies through extending individual competencies, within a critical context of in-depth practice-based knowledge; and to create self-aware, self-reflective practitioners with an openness to personal and emotional growth.

Students will progress through the Postgraduate Diploma towards an award in two stages. Students will join at the beginning of the programme and all modules are compulsory.

PROGRAMME DELIVERY:

The programme will be delivered by way of an intensive Summer School course of �5 days in a block period from late June each academic year.

Practice placements: This Postgraduate Diploma programme is practice-based, hence clinical work is a mandatory component at both Stage � and Stage 2. Clinical work is practised at the student’s place of employment or on a particular placement. The entry requirements state that students must be currently working with children or have arranged to do so before the start of the programme thus enabling them to apply theory to practice from the beginning. Students have to ensure that their employers or placement organisations agree to an appropriate contract. The programme requires �00 hours of clinical work one-to-one during Stage � and �00 hours of group work during Stage 2. The main setting for clinical work is primary schools but may also be in special needs schools, nursery schools, primary health care, other social work, hospitals, care homes, adoption and foster care services.


The specific nature of the assessment will differ from module to module, depending on the learning outcomes. All students will be obliged to pass the practice placement, have a satisfactory report from their clinical/practice supervisor and complete the stipulated number of practice hours. Postgraduate students are expected to demonstrate explicitly their knowledge, skills and competences to practice as a Play Therapist in three distinct ways:

• via written work• via clinical supervision • via clinical practice


The programme provides an opportunity for those interested in developing their skills to work therapeutically with children and for those who wish to make a career decision to become a Play Therapist. The aim of the Foundation Diploma in Training and Education is to introduce participants to the basic knowledge and skills related to planning and delivering training interventions. The programme is offered in a number of locations throughout the country.


Students are expected to attend two, two day workshops (with an interval of three weeks between each workshop). Students are also required to submit an assignment (the assignment requires the student to produce a video recording of a training session).

PROGRESSION:

Participants who complete the Foundation Diploma in Training and Education may claim exemption from the Learning – Essential Trainer Skills module in the Certificate in Training and Education programme.

The Foundation Diploma in Training and Education (Essential Trainer Skills) programme is for those who want to develop the skills to effectively deliver training sessions. Programme activities and assessment are tailored to meet the requirements of Foundation Diploma in Training and Education streams. Students learn about the tools and techniques necessary to become an accomplished trainer. Students also learn new skills and ideas by exploring theoretical and practical aspects of training. PROGRAMME APPLICATIONS

1. How do I apply for an adult education programme?Generally, you complete an application form online by logging onto www.nuigalway.ie/apply. If you would prefer to complete your application by using a hardcopy form, you can request a form from the Adult and Continuing Education Office or directly from the programme coordinator.

In the application form, you provide contact details, outline your educational background, any previous courses undertaken and any additional information that may be required to assess your suitability for the programme for which you are applying. You will also be required to provide a copy of your birth certificate or passport, a passport-sized photo and the programme application fee (non-refundable), which is circa €�0.

For online applications you submit your application via the web link provided or, if you are using the hardcopy form, you return the application form to the designated office (which is generally the Admissions Office) on or before the stated closing date. However, because some courses request you to return that application form to somewhere other than the Admissions Office, for hard copy applications check the application form or the appropriate course details in this prospectus to confirm the return address.

2. What is the closing date for applications?While the closing date for applications occurs typically in mid to late June, the actual closing date for each programme differs. Check the closing date specified on the programme brochure and make sure that you adhere to this date.

3. What happens to my application form after I apply?Applications received by the Admissions Office are acknowledged by return of email. Acknowledgement procedures for applications returned elsewhere may differ, so check with the programme coordinator to find out how you will be notified that your application has been received. Applications are processed by the Admissions Office and forwarded to the various college offices for assessment in accordance with selection criteria.

Successful applicants are informed via email by the University. To accept your place you will be required to return a deposit within the specified time frame – this deposit is offset against the full fee payment. The process of assessing applications and offering places may take between four and six weeks. Additional registration details and communication from the relevant department will be issued to all applicants approximately two weeks before the programme commences, informing them of the registration date and lecture times for the programme.

4. When do courses begin?The majority of courses commence the first week of September of each year. Lectures normally take place Monday to Thursday

from �8:00 hours onwards or on Saturdays from 9:00-�7:00. However, if you opt for a blended-learning programme, that is, a combination of self-instructional materials and classroom tutorials, you may find that your classroom-based tutorials take place entirely on weekends.

FEES

5. What is the schedule of fee payment?Once a student accepts a course place, an advance booking deposit (portion of course fees) is paid initially. This is a non-refundable deposit which becomes part of the overall fee once registered. The deposit is €500 and must be paid using a postal order or bank draft when you accept your course place. The remaining fee may be paid in two instalments as listed in question six below.

6. Tuition feesThe EU fee for each course is listed in the programme section of this prospectus. Non-EU students may be obliged to pay higher fees than those payable by EU students. You should contact the Fees Office directly for further information on this.

Tuition fees are payable for each year of the course. EU fees can be paid in full, prior to registration or in two equal instalments, 50% prior to registration in September and 50% by the following January. Non-EU fees must be paid in full, prior to registration. Fees can be paid by bank giro at your local bank branch or online using your credit card. You should retain the receipt stamped by the bank and/or online payment confirmation number, as evidence of payment. As online fee payment is the recommended route of payment, students who would prefer to pay via the bank should request a fees giro form from the Fees Office by sending an email to [email protected] and stating their name and student number.

7. If I change my mind about a programme, are fees refunded? Once registered, you are liable for full course fees regardless as to whether you complete/attend the course. The University accepts no obligation to refund any fees or part thereof. However, if you wish to appeal this decision please contact the Fees Office directly in writing or by email at [email protected].

It is essential that you appreciate clearly the various requirements of the programme for which you are registering and it is recommended that you contact the programme coordinator for guidance on programme suitability.

8. Is funding available for these programmes?In certain cases employers may sponsor tuition fees where the programme of study has direct relevance to the workplace, while other students may seek support from local community or development organisations.

Students in employment may be eligible for income tax relief on certain programmes at the standard rate of tax. This is in accordance with the Taxes Consolidation Act of �997. For specific details on this scheme, contact your local tax office or visit the Revenue web site on www.revenue.ie.

ACADEMIC CREDITS AND QUALIFICATIONS

9. Can I obtain credit for previous courses undertaken by me?The University acknowledges that all learning is valuable and that courses previously undertaken by students may be considered for the award of credit and possible subject exemptions against a new programme of study through the RPL process (Recognition of Prior Learning).

If you feel that you have covered some of the course material previously, the RPL process may allow you to gain admission to a programme of study, or to gain exemptions from some parts of a programme, based on demonstrated learning achieved prior to admission. This means that you will have a lighter course load for some elements of the programme and, in some cases, complete your award over a shorter period.

RPL includes:(i) Recognition of Prior Certified Learning: Where an applicant has already been awarded a certificate for a formal programme taken at another institution or training organisation, this prior learning can be recognised and may entitle the applicant to exemptions from some parts of a programme.

Certain courses are deemed eligible for the award of credit:• Extra-mural or Adult Education Certificates or Diplomas • University programmes, full-time or part-time • Other third-level programmes

Where such credit is granted it is normally limited to a maximum number of credits. The award of credits applies to specific programmes only – check with the relevant programme coordinator regarding the exemption policy of a specific programme.

(ii) Recognition of Prior Experiential Learning: This involves the awarding of credit for learning from experience. In this case, the candidate must produce a portfolio to support the claim for admission, exemption, or credit. As a general principle, credit is given for learning, not for experience per se.

10. What are ECTS (credits) and what value do they have?To quantify learning and to place a value on it, courses are divided up into credit units, under a system called the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). Credits represent a standard number of class contact hours and average workload for a programme. Each module is worth a certain number of credits and each course requires the completion of a standard number of credits within the following general guidelines:

The use of the term credits is a common one among the third-level sector and provides a “currency” with which students may transfer from one course to another or gain exemption from elements of a particular programme.

11. What can I do with an NUI Galway qualification?All programmes at NUI Galway reflect the highest academic standards of the National University of Ireland. These programmes have been devised in response to the professional training needs of different community and corporate organisations and are recognised, stand-alone qualifications. Having attained this initial qualification, you may wish to progress to further study in a particular area or alternatively progress to a Degree programme having already completed a Diploma programme.

A number of our Diploma programmes have follow-on Degree options. For example, students of the Diploma in Community Development Practice may progress to the B.A. in Community and Family Studies. Students from the various single-subject Diplomas in the Humanities, for example, Archaeology, English Literature or History, may progress directly with credit exemptions to the part-time Bachelor of Arts programme.

Apart from the possibility of progressing to further study, students completing an adult education programme improve their writing, reading and oral presentation skills. These skills are invaluable in the workplace in all sectors and help to improve the career prospects of these individuals.

12. What student support services can I avail of?NUI Galway has a wide range of student support services which are available to Adult and Continuing Education students. It is important for students returning to education, or for those who have been out of education for some time, to avail of these services to enable them to make the most of their time as students in NUI Galway. Some of the support services offered to students returning to education include additional study, examination techniques, applied writing, reading skills and memory technique workshops. These are provided outside regular class hours and assist students in preparing for end-of-semester examinations. While these workshops are optional, students are encouraged to attend as many as possible, particularly during the first year of their study programme. Students who attend these workshops regularly comment on how useful the workshops are, particularly in providing valuable study tips and techniques.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

13. What are the mature student entry requirements for these programmes?Part-time programmesStudents applying to complete a part-time course at NUI Galway under the age of 2� may, in certain circumstances, be asked to fulfil the matriculation requirements for the University, which include a pass in at least six subjects (including Irish, English and another language) at the Leaving Certificate Examination, with at least grade C� in two subjects on the higher course and at least grade D� (ordinary or higher course) in the remaining four subjects. Students who do not meet this matriculation requirement may be allowed to submit applications for some courses and are assessed for suitability of entry on a case-by-case basis.

Students aged 2� years or over by January �st of the year of admission to a part-time programme may matriculate on the grounds of mature years alone. Therefore, many of the programmes detailed in this prospectus state that there are no formal entry requirements involved.

Full-time programmesStudents applying to the CAO for full-time courses on the grounds of mature years alone must satisfy the NUI regulation and be of mature years (at least 2� years of age on or before January �st of the year of entry to first year lectures in a constituent university or recognised college). Students who are under 2� years of age are assessed for entry though the CAO on the basis of their Leaving Certificate points only.

14. Are there any restrictions on the numbers of places available for mature students on the full-time programmes? In addition to the ‘mature years’ regulation, the following selection procedures and restrictions on places available for mature students on the full-time programmes apply (the course codes refer to the CAO course codes):

Arts — about �50 places are available in the daytime B.A. (GY�0� – GY�20, excl. GY�04)). Each applicant is assessed via the MSAP exam (Mature Students Admissions Pathway Exam) which much be registered for, once the CAO application has been completed and a CAO number generated. The deadline for applying as a mature applicant for full-time degrees is February �st each year, as is registration for the MSAP exam to all Arts Degrees. The exam is generally held in mid-February and registration is carried out online at http://www.msap.acer.edu.au/

Application on mature grounds only is not accepted for GY�04 Arts (Psychology) – mature students wishing to apply to study Psychology should apply for GY�0�.

Commerce — about �5 places are available in the daytime Bachelor of Commerce programmes (GY20� – GY207) on an annual basis. Evidence of educational attainment in the business area is desirable. A pass in Mathematics in the Leaving Certificate or in an equivalent examination is required. By way of preparation for entry to a business or commerce programme, a Foundation course is available. Programme details are found on page 57 of this prospectus.

Engineering — about �0 places are available across all programmes, excluding Information Technology programmes, in the College of Engineering and Informatics. Applications are considered on an individual basis. Mathematics at Honours Leaving Certificate standard (or at least a minimum of a B� at Ordinary Level Maths) and Science are required.

Computer Science and Information Technology Engineering — about ten places are available. Applications are considered on

an individual basis. Mathematics at Honours Leaving Certificate standard (or at least a minimum of a B� at Ordinary Level Maths) and Science are required. By way of preparation for entry to an Engineering or IT programme, a Foundation course is available. Programme details are found on page 57 of this prospectus.

Science — about 50 places are available across all programmes in the College. However, an intake limit of ten per cent of the quota for each programme applies. Applications are considered on an individual basis. Knowledge of mathematics and at least one science subject is desirable. By way of preparation for entry to a Science programme, a Foundation course is available. Programme details are found on page 57 of this prospectus.

Law — Four places are available in GY250 and eight in GY25�. Applications are considered on an individual basis and other criteria, in addition to examination results, are also taken into account. A detailed knowledge of the profession and the degree is desired, as is relevant work/life experience.

Nursing & Midwifery Studies —�5 per cent of places in the General Nursing programme in Galway and Portiuncula (GY525) and 40 per cent of places in Psychiatric Nursing (GY526) are available to students applying on mature grounds. Twenty per cent of places in the Midwifery programme are available to mature applicants. Further details are available from the Nursing Careers Centre or from An Bord Altranais, phone (0�) 6�98500, web: www.nursingcareers.ie.

Medicine & Health Sciences — Application on mature grounds only is not accepted for Medicine (GY50�). Two places are reserved for mature applicants annually in Occupational Therapy (GY502), in Speech and Language Therapy (GY50�) and in Podiatry (GY504). For all Health Science degrees, a high level of science, relevant work experience in a health care area, and knowledge of the degree and profession are required.Applications on mature grounds are invited in the normal way for University entrants through the Central Applications Office (CAO). Applications should be made online at www.cao.ie and each applicant is advised to familiarise him/herself with the criteria, quotas of places in each degree, assessments and important dates involved in applying. This information can be found at www.nuigalway.ie/mature.

The closing date for applications is February �st each year. However, CAO encourages mature applicants to submit applications in advance of this date if possible. There is generally a discounted rate for online applications made before January 20th each year.

GENERAL

15. How do I know which is the right course for me?Choosing the right course is difficult, particularly in light of the range of part-time programmes which is available to you. Ideally, you should consider what your interests and strengths are, take a look at the programme content and method of delivery to see if this meets with your needs. You should also contact the programme coordinator for some further details on the programme and make your decision on the balance of information available. Many of our courses have a Certificate option after one year’s study or a Diploma after two, which gives you an exit option (with an academic award) if you wish to change your course of study or if you wish to finish your studies after one year.

16. I’m not sure if I want to start a full College course – what can I do?The University offers a number of Foundation programmes in the areas of Science and Technology, Business and the Humanities, which allow you to experience these subject areas at foundational level for one year. Each subject area has a follow-on Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Arts degree programme which you can follow on completion of the Foundation programme should you wish to continue your studies in this area. These Foundation programmes provide an ideal preparation for University life. Check out the programme details on page 57 of this prospectus and also the Certificate/Diploma in General Studies on page 29.

17. What are the tutorial and class schedules?Class schedules vary according to the programme you select. However, in general terms, classroom-based courses run lectures in the evenings from 6.00pm onwards, Mondays to Thursdays and occasionally offer tutorials on a Saturday morning. If you choose a blended-learning programme, you will be required to attend face-to-face lectures on an occasional basis, once every three to four weeks for one to two full days. Often these classes take place on a Friday or at the weekend. For programme specifics you are advised to contact the programme coordinator.

There are two main entrances to the University (i.e. from University Road and from Newcastle Road). If you enter by University Road you arrive at the University main entrance, the original building on campus. Limited student parking is available here. Alternatively, if you enter from Newcastle Road you will enter the campus on Distillery Road (just beside the AIB Bank); this is the main entrance for the lecture theatres and the on-campus car parks. Alternatively, a large 500 space car park is available at Dangan (directly north of Distillery Road), which is a �0-�5 minute walk from the main University buildings.
