October comes from the Latin word octo which means
eight. In ancient Rome, October was the eighth month
of the year. When the Gregorian calendar was
adopted, it became the tenth month of the year but it
has retained its original name.
The birthstones for October are opal and tourmaline. Opals are considered to be the
traditional birthstone and they symbolize hope, innocence and purity. Tourmaline is
the modern birthstone for October. Wearing Pink Tourmaline
throughout the day helps release stress, worries, depression and
anxiety. It can be used in partnership with Black Tourmaline to
diffuse obsessive behavior. Both gemstones come in a wide variety of colors and are
known for displaying multiple colors within the same stone.
The flower for the month of October is the calendula. Another name for
calendula is the pot marigold. They are easy to grow and popular in gardens. Colors range from pale yellow to deep orange. The calendula symbolizes sorrow or
sympathy.
Libra and Scorpio are the astrological signs for October. Libra - The Scales September
23rd - October 22nd. As their zodiac signs and meanings would indicate, Libra's are all
about balance, justice, equanimity and stability. They easily surround themselves with
harmony and beauty, but sometimes go to extremes to do so if their goals are
unreasonable or unhealthy. With Venus as their ruling planet, Libra's are very
understanding, caring, and often the champion of underdogs. They have keen intuitions, but often don't
give themselves enough credit for their perceptions. They can be quiet and shy if not persuaded to
come out of their shell. Ironically and in spite of their introverted nature they make excellent
debaters, often proving a point from out of seemingly nowhere.
Scorpio - The Scorpion October 23rd - November 21st. The Scorpio is often misunderstood. These
personalities are bold and are capable of executing massive enterprises with cool control
and confidence. They can surmount seemingly all obstacles when they put their mind to
the task, and they have unshakable focus when the situation calls for it. Regardless of
their bold nature, they are often secretive, but they are always observing behind their
withdrawn manner. Being associated with a solar animal, (the scorpion) they are not
withdrawn for long, and when they come out again they do so with force, vigor and determination. It is
true, Scorpio's can be argumentative and pack a powerful sting, but that's simply because they see all
opposition as a healthy challenge.
More American Presidents were born in the month of October than any other month. They were John
Adams, Rutherford B. Hayes, Chester Arthur, Theodore Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower and Jimmy
Carter.

October Holidays
Yom Kippur is a Jewish holiday that begins on October 3rd. It is also called the "Day of
Atonement" and is considered to be the holiest day of the year for Jewish people.
Columbus Day commemorates the day that Christopher Columbus arrived in the Americas.
In the United States it is celebrated on the second Monday in October. The traditional
day is October 12th, the day that Columbus arrived. The day is celebrated by many
countries in the Americas including the United States. In many Spanish speaking
countries it is called Dia de la Raza which stands for Day of Race.
Halloween is a holiday with a long history and can have different meanings for different people. The
name Halloween is a shorter version of All Hallows' Eve or the night before All Saints Day. It can be
thought of as a celebration of the night before All Saints Day. Halloween is said to
have its roots in an ancient Celtic celebration in Ireland and Scotland called Samhain.
Samhain marked the end of summer. People at the time were frightened of evil
spirits. They would dress up in costumes and make noise in the streets in order to
make the spirits go away. When the Catholic Church came to the Celtic land, it
brought with it the celebration of All Saints Day on November 1st. This day was also
called All Hallows Day and the night before was called All Hallows Eve. Many of the traditions from
the two holidays became merged together. Over time, All Hollows Eve was shortened to Halloween and
additional traditions like trick-or-treating and carving Jack-o-lanterns became a part of the holiday.
Interesting things that happened during the month of October:
Free rural delivery of mail began in the United States, October 1, 1896.
The first "Model T" Ford was put on the market, October 1, 1908.
The Soviet Union launched its first artificial satellite, Sputnik, October 4, 1957.
The first double-decked steamboat, the Washington, arrived at New Orleans, October 7,
1816.
The great fire of Chicago began, and burned for about 30 hours, October 8, 1871.
The U.S. Naval Academy opened at Annapolis, Md., October 10, 1845.
Columbus landed in America, October 12, 1492.
The United States flag was formally raised over Alaska, October 18, 1867.
The U.S.S. Constitution, better known as Old Ironsides, launched, October 21,
1797.
The first transcontinental telegram was sent, October 24, 1861.

It Must Be October
The harvest moon hangs round and high
It dodges clouds high in the sky
The stars wink down their love and mirth
The Autumn seasons is giving birth
Oh it must be October
The leaves of red bright gold and brown
To Mother earth come tumbling down
The breezy nights the ghostly sights
The eerie spooky far off sounds
Are signs that its October
The pumpkin yellow big and round
Are carried by costumed clumsy clowns
Its Halloween lets celebrate
Come one come all and don't be late
We know now its October
We'll roast and toast some luscious food
For apples we'll be bobbin
While tales are told around the fire
Of timely ghosts and goblins
Oh how we love October
The moon has grown pale
The stars have grown dim
Our Halloween party is over
With a hi-de-ho homeward we'll go
What a delightful month October

SHOULD I REALLY JOIN FACEBOOK?? (PRICELESS)
When I bought my Blackberry, I thought about the 30-year business I ran with 1800 employees, all
without a cell phone that plays music, takes videos, pictures and communicates with Facebook and
Twitter. I signed up under duress for Twitter and Facebook, so my seven kids, their spouses, my 13
grand kids and 2 great grand kids could communicate with me in the modern way. I figured I could
handle something as simple as Twitter with only 140 characters of space.
That was before one of my grandkids hooked me up for Tweeter, Tweetree, Twhirl, Twitter on, Tweetie
and Twitterific, Tweetdeck, Twitpix and something that sends every message to my cell phone and
every other program within the texting world.
My phone was beeping every three minutes with the details of everything except the bowel movements
of the entire next generation. I am not ready to live like this. I keep my cell phone in the garage in my
golf bag.
The kids bought me a GPS for my last birthday because they say I get lost every now and then going
over to the grocery store or library. I keep that in a box under my tool bench with the Blue tooth [its
red] phone I am supposed to use when I drive. I wore it once and was standing in line at Barnes and
Noble talking to my wife and everyone within 50 yards was glaring at me. I had to take my hearing aid
out to use it, and I got a little loud.
I mean the GPS looked pretty smart on my dash board, but the lady inside that gadget was the most
annoying and rudest person I had run into in a long time. Every 10 minutes she would sarcastically say,
"Re-calc-u-lating." You would think that she could be nicer. It was like she could barely tolerate me.
She would let go with a deep sigh and then tell me to make a U-turn at the next light. Then if I made a
right turn instead. Well, it was not a good relationship...
When I get really lost now, I call my wife and tell her the name of the cross streets and, while she is
starting to develop the same tone as Gypsy, the GPS lady, at least she loves me.
To be perfectly frank, I am still trying to learn how to use the cordless phones in our house. We have
had them for 4 years, but I still haven't figured out how I lose three phones all at once and have to run
around digging under chair cushions,
checking bathrooms, and the dirty laundry baskets
when the phone rings.
The world is just getting too complex for me. They even mess me up every time I go to the grocery
store. You would think they could settle on something themselves but this sudden "Paper or Plastic?"
every time I check out just knocks me for a loop. I bought some of those cloth reusable bags to avoid
looking confused, but I never remember to take them with me.
18
Now I toss it back to them. When they ask me, "Paper or plastic?" I just say, "It doesn't matter to
me. I am bi-sacksual." Then it's their turn to stare at me with a blank look. I was recently asked if I
tweet. I answered, No, but I do fart a lot."
P.S. I know some of you are not over 60. I sent it to you to allow you to forward it to those who are.
We senior citizens don't need anymore gadgets.
The TV remote and the garage door remote
are about all we can handle.

Fun facts
Two 12-ounce servings of freshly juiced apples, pears, carrots, celery and leafy greens can
produce the same effect as twice the dosing of a laxative. A rabbit sweats through the soft pads on its feet. About 30% of Americans flush the toilet while they’re still sitting on it. A hedgehog’s heart beats 300 times a minute on average. 7% of Americans claim they never bathe at all. Over 99% of your DNA sequence is the same as other people’s. A hurricane that hit Puerto Rico in 1928 dropped 30 inches of rain over the island. Franklin D. Roosevelt was the only U.S. President to be elected 4 times. Starfish are echinoderms, which are found in abundance in deep seas. Sigmund Freud postulated that dreams are the symbolic expression of frustrated desires that
had been relegated to the unconscious mind. The largest galaxies contain up to 400 billion stars. In Japan, the average number of eggs eaten each year by one person is 347.

GREAT TRUTHS ABOUT LIFE THAT ADULTS HAVE LEARNED:
1) Raising teenagers is like nailing JELLO to a tree.
2) There is always a lot to be thankful for, if you take the time to look. For example, I'm
sitting here thinking how nice it is that wrinkles don't hurt.
3) Car sickness is the feeling you get when the monthly payment is due.
4) Families are like fudge . . . mostly sweet, with a few nuts.
5) Today's mighty oak is just yesterday's nut that held its ground.
6) Laughing helps. It's like jogging on the inside.
7) Middle age is when you choose your cereal for the fiber, not the toy.
8) My mind not only wanders; sometimes it leaves completely.
9) If you can remain calm, you just don't have all the facts.
10) You know you're getting old when you stoop to tie your shoes and wonder what else you can
do while you're down there.

As I was nursing my baby, my cousin's six-year-old daughter, Krissy, came
into the room. Never having seen anyone breast feed before, she was
intrigued and full of all kinds of questions about what I was doing.
After mulling over my answers, she remarked, 'My mom has some of those,
but I don't think she knows how to use them.'
Working as a pediatric nurse, I had the difficult assignment of giving
immunization shots to children.
One day, I entered the examining room to give four-year-old Lizzie her
needle. 'No, no, no!' she screamed. 'Lizzie,' scolded her mother, 'that's
not polite behavior.' With that, the girl yelled even louder, 'No, thank you!
No, thank you!
