The Tasmanian Government is proud to again support the Junction Arts Festival – celebrating its sixth year and now an established event on the artistic and cultural events calendar.

Tasmania’s ongoing appeal as a destination relies upon the type of creativity, imagination and innovation that the Junction Arts Festival captures.

By innovatively using Launceston landmarks as its stage, encouraging audience participation, and by supporting a unique experience of live performance, dance, theatre, music and installation art – Junction has drawn over 280,000 attendees over its past five Festivals into the city. It also gives locals from across the State the chance to experience a rich cultural experience in the beautiful city of Launceston.

Congratulations to the staff, Board, sponsors and volunteers on six great years of Junction. I’m thrilled to see Junction Arts Festival’s growth and journey into a new direction.

Will HodgmanPREMIER, TASMANIA

I am delighted to again introduce Junction Arts Festival for 2016 now in its sixth year.

Launceston is a great city to host such an exciting and diverse event.

The Junction Arts Festival is highly regarded by the City of Launceston as a significant contributor to the cultural, social and economic wealth of the community. The festival plays an integral role in engaging young people in Launceston and its surrounding regions in creative processes and incredible performances.

The Festival is one of the City of Launceston’s signature events and I would like to thank the dedicated and passionate team who make this Festival possible.

Welcome to Junction Arts Festival 2016.

Alderman Albert van ZettenMAYOR, LAUNCESTON

MAYOR

WELCOME

Welcome to the new look Junction. We hope you will make this festival yours as this is an arts festival like no other, in which you get to be in the centre of the action.

You can choose from an amazing range of festival experiences that are unique, interactive, intimate, entertaining, eye-catching and great fun. To ensure the Festival is accessible for everyone, half of this year’s events are free and everyone is welcome to participate. Don’t miss the new Fountain Bar located in a circus tent in Prince’s Square featuring live music and a great line-up of DJs and special events. This will be the perfect spot to start your Festival experience.

Many Junction shows are also in spaces surrounding Prince’s Square or close by, and all are within easy walking distance. On behalf of the Junction team we look forward to celebrating with you over 5 days and nights of festival mayhem.

Steve HentyGENERAL MANAGER

Greg ClarkeCREATIVE DIRECTOR

Welcome to the Junction Arts Festival featuring an amazing range of extraordinary and intriguing art events for everyone to enjoy.

I am thrilled that Prince’s Square will be this year’s signature event and a central hub for the festival, becoming a junction for an amazing program of events including illuminations, public art, music and dance.

The Festival transforms Launceston into a more vibrant and creative city through community engagement and providing the city with an exciting and dynamic event each spring.

I would like to acknowledge the significant support of the State Government of Tasmania, the Launceston City Council, WD Booth and all of our remarkable sponsors. This festival just couldn’t happen without them. I’d also like to welcome Greg Clarke, the Festival’s new Creative Director and congratulate the Junction team on their sixth year.

PRINCE’S SQUAREFor this one special time of the year Junction will light up the beautiful and historic 19th century Prince’s Square transforming it into a night garden of sparkling lights, illuminations and art experiences for everyone. Come and see the Square’s two giant Sequoias, amazing oak and elm trees, and stunning French designed Val d’Osne Fountain, all drenched in beautiful washes of light and colour.

Prince’s Square has an extraordinary history as a place of celebration, bush-ranger hangings, protests, visits by British Royalty, and was the site for the declaration to end convict transportation to Van Diemen’s Land. In 2016, its history takes another exciting turn, as it becomes Junction’s Festival village featuring shows, the fabulous Fountain Bar, pop-up food stalls, art installations, music, kid’s activities and live entertainment.

TASDANCE, UNIVERSITY OF TASMANIA AND JUNCTION PRESENT

RELAX THE CHIMP TasdanceRelax the Chimp is an outdoor dance event that invites everyone to dance, experiment, play and get physical whilst watching their own larger-than-life avatar dancing on the big screen. Created by Tasdance and launched via a partnership with University of Tasmania, Relax the Chimp features the University of Tasmania’s community, Launceston’s dance groups and YOU!!

Come and let your inner dancer free in an environment where there is no right or wrong, nor any limits on age, ability or style. The music will be based on open requests from the community made in the weeks leading up to the event and will represent the feeling and culture of the community we are based in and the dance styles this community enjoys.

To nominate your own tracks jump on Twitter at #relaxthechimplaunceston before August 31.

Let us know your ‘trigger song’ and then come along to play and groove in the open air at the festival hub.

CAN YOU SEE WHAT WE SEE?Renae Shadler & Collaborators Can You See What We See? is an interdisciplinary walking tour inviting you to see Launceston from a traveller’s perspective. During the tour you will experience audio works, video installations and participatory activities that encourage you to experience Launceston through fresh eyes. Can You See What We See? makes the familiar unfamiliar by investigating our relationship to place, time and those around us through the context of travel. Inspired by Alain de Botton’s The Art of Travel this experience will encourage you to walk slower, think deeper and engage in your environment in ways you never expected. Can You See What We See? will bring Renae Shadler and Collaborators together with local artists to create this one-of-a-kind experience, finding beauty in everyday spaces and highlighting Launceston’s hidden gems and histories.

VILLAGE Brienna Macnish with Clare McCracken & Robert D JordanCreated in collaboration with the residents of Launceston’s retirement communities, VILLAGE takes you past the manicured lawns and behind the lace curtains to discover what life in a retirement village is really like. VILLAGE is the sequel to HOME (Next Wave Festival, 2014) and part of a triology of works that explore aging in contemporary Australia. This audio installation tells very personal stories about downsizing, the fear of being burdensome and new beginnings in old age with humor and fierce optimism.

THE STANCELiesel Zink Tasmania is known for it’s rich history of protest and activism particularly when protecting it’s stunning wilderness. The Stance uses this as inspiration for this extraordinary site-specific dance and sound performance investigating the choreography of bodies in protest. Performed by the wonderful dancers of Hobart’s Mature Artists Dance Experience (MADE) The Stance questions why we protest, how we protest and what it means to put your body on the line for something you believe in. A live and original sound composition by Mike Willmett is transmitted through wireless headphones providing an intimate viewing experience for this evocative work.

“The Stance is a brilliant and epic work…a production rich in ideas. It is a wonderful, defiant statement of kinetic public art…’ MATT FOLEY, REVIEWER AND FORMER POLITICIAN

The Stance was first created with the support of Metro Arts, with the assistance of the Australian Government through the Australia Council for the Arts, its arts funding and advisory body. The Stance in Launceston was seeded by Dance Satellite, curated and produced by Britt Guy.

THOUSANDSMatthew DayThousands, the first work in The Trilogy Series attempts to locate a kind of degree zero of choreography. Utilising microscopic movement, the body is approached as a site of re-membering.

Thousands opens an associative space where the spectator is free to drift and continually re-position themselves, in relation to the work over time. The choreographic field therefore is imagined as an energetic and perceptual exchange, between all human and inhuman forces of the work.
