The Greeting

Prayer of preparation

Prayers of penitence

Gloria

Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you. And also with you.

Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The saints were faithful unto death and now dwell in the heavenly kingdom for ever. As we celebrate their joy, let us bring to the Lord our sins and weaknesses, and ask for his mercy.

Jesus Christ, risen Master and triumphant Lord, we come to you in sorrow for our sins, and confess to you our weaknesses and unbelief. We have lived by our own strength, and not by the power of your resurrection. In your mercy, forgive us. Lord, hear us and help us.

We have lived by the light of our own eyes, as faithless and not believing. In your mercy, forgive us. Lord, hear us and help us.

We have lived for this world alone, and doubted our home in heaven. In your mercy, forgive us. Lord, hear us and help us.

May God our Father forgive you your sins, and bring you to the fellowship of his table with his saints for ever. Amen.

Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth.

Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory.

Collect

Liturgy of the word

Vocal solo

Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer.

For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the most high, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

O God, you ever delight to reveal yourself to the childlike and lowly of heart: grant that, following the example of the blessèd Francis, we may count the wisdom of this world as foolishness and know only Jesus Christ and him crucified. Amen.

Reader: Norma Goodwin

Micah 6: 6–8 ‘With what shall I come before the Lord, and bow myself before God on high? Shall I come before him with burnt-offerings, with calves a year old? Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, with tens of thousands of rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?’ He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?

For God’s holy word, thanks be to God.

‘Make me a channel of your peace’ by Sebastian Temple, based on a prayer attributed to St Francis, sung by Mollie Stannard, accompanied by David Blunt

Reader: Christopher Seaman

Galatians 6: 14–18 May I never boast of anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. For neither circumcision nor uncircumcision is anything;

but a new creation is everything! As for those who will follow this rule – peace be upon them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God.

From now on, let no one make trouble for me; for I carry the marks of Jesus branded on my body.

May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brothers and sisters. Amen.

For God’s holy word, thanks be to God.

Air by Henry Purcell

Alleluia, alleluia. I have called you friends, says the Lord, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. Alleluia.

Hear the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord.

Luke 12: 22–34 He said to his disciples, ‘Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat, or about your body, what you will wear. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds! And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life? If then you are not able to do so small a thing as that, why do you worry about the rest? Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you – you of little faith! And do not keep striving for what you are to eat and what you are to drink, and do not keep worrying. For it is the nations of the world that strive after all these things, and your Father knows that you need them. Instead, strive for his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.

‘Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. Sell your possessions, and give alms. Make purses for yourselves that do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

This is the gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

Prayers

Nicene Creed

Intercessor: Liz Stannard

Let us pray for the Church and for the world, and let us thank God for God’s goodness.

Lord, hear us. Lord, graciously hear us.

Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Liturgy of the sacrament

Eucharistic Prayer

We are fellow citizens with the saints and the whole household of God, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who came and preached peace to those who were far off and those who were near.

The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.

Yours, Lord, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the splendour, and the majesty; for everything in heaven and on earth is yours. All things come from you, and of your own do we give you.

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give thanks and praise.

It is indeed right, it is our duty and our joy, at all times and in all places to give you thanks and praise, holy Father, heavenly King, almighty and eternal God, through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord. And now we give you thanks because you raised up our holy father Francis to burn as a shining light in your Church; that, inflamed with love for you and all creation and bearing in his body the marks of your Son’s passion, he might bring to glory many sons and daughters. In communion with angels and archangels and all who have served you on earth and worship you now in heaven we raise our voices to proclaim your glory, for ever praising you, and saying:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Fulfilling God, in Jesus’ dying and rising you show us the extent of mission and the cost of ministry. Send your Holy Spirit, that your people may be filled with love, joy and peace, and that these gifts of bread and wine may be for us the body and blood of your Son Jesus Christ. Who, at supper with his disciples, took bread, gave you thanks, broke the bread, and gave it to them, saying, ‘Take, eat: this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me’.

After supper he took the cup. Again he gave you thanks, and gave it to his disciples, saying, ‘Drink this, all of you: this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.’

Great is the mystery of faith. Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again.

Revealing God, as you take bread and wine and make them the bearers of your Son’s risen life, take our flesh and blood and make them the channels of your peace. Transform your Church that it may resemble the generosity, joy and abundance of your Trinity. Raise up those whose gifts have been suppressed, neglected, ignored or rejected. Renew your people through humble service and prophetic witness, that your name may be known in the face of injustice, poverty and tyranny.

Giving of Communion

Music during Communion

Show your glory through agents of healing and learning, and shower your people with your love, until the day comes when every eye beholds you, full of grace and truth, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

As our Saviour taught us, so we pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen.

God’s holy gifts for God’s holy people. Jesus Christ is holy, Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Jesus, Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: have mercy on us.

Jesus, Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: have mercy on us.

Jesus, Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: grant us your peace.

Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving.

11.15 St Matthew’s

Lord God, you made your Church rich through the poverty of blessèd Francis: help us, like him, not to trust in earthly things but to seek your heavenly gifts; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Father of all, we give you thanks and praise, that when we were still far off you met us in your Son and brought us home. Dying and living, he declared your love, gave us grace, and opened the gate of glory. May we who share Christ’s body live his risen life; we who drink his cup bring life to others; we whom the spirit lights give light to the world. Keep us firm in the hope you have set before us, so we and all your children shall be free, and the whole earth live to praise your name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

God give you grace to follow his saints in faith and hope and love; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen.

Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. In the name of Christ. Amen.

Francis of Assisi

Francis was born in Assisi in central Italy either in 1181 or the following year. He was baptised Giovanni but given the name Francesco by his father, a cloth merchant who traded in France and had married a French wife. There was an expectation that he would eventually take over his father’s business but Francis had a rebellious youth and a difficult relationship with his father.

After suffering the ignominy of imprisonment following capture whilst at war with the local city of Perugia, he returned a changed man. He took to caring for disused churches and for the poor, particularly those suffering from leprosy.

Whilst praying in the semi-derelict church of St Damian, he distinctly heard the words: Go and repair my house, which you see is falling down. Others joined him and he prepared a simple, gospel-based Rule for them all to live by. As the Order grew, it witnessed to Christ through proclaiming the gospel of repentance and emphasising the poverty of Christ as an example for his followers.

Two years before his death, his life being so closely linked with that of his crucified Saviour, he received the stigmata, the marks of the wounds of Christ, on his body. By his death, on the evening of 3 October 1226, his Order had spread throughout western Christendom.

Green Week flags Thank you to all who made flags for Winchester Green Week. The bunting has been up all week – the majority in the Brooks Shopping Centre window display, plus three in the Tourist Information Centre and one at Montezuma’s. Jo Crocker of WinACC writes, ‘The St Paul’s contribution was a substantial portion of the whole bunting. Great to have that community effort.’

WinACC’s AGM will be held on Sat 17 October, 11–12.30, as a virtual event for members. If you’d like to attend but aren’t yet a member, it’s not too late to join – and it’s free. Did you know that out of 189 districts in England for which data is available, 150 have a lower carbon footprint per person than Winchester District? Working together, we can do better!

Make your own leafmould Autumn’s the ideal time to gather up leaves to make leafmould – a great soil-improver and one of the best growing mediums there is.

Beech leaves, so common locally, are ideal; it’s best to shred thicker or evergreen leaves. Just put them in a dustbin bag, moisten the leaves, pierce a few holes in the bag, tie the top loosely and then store it for a couple of years. Or you can make a chicken-wire frame for an open leaf heap, just dampening it from time to time.
