Dear Parishioners and Friends of Ascension: I have just completed my sixth year here at Ascension, and this spring was fortunate enough to teach the final Confirmation class to some of the same students to whom I taught first year First Communion class six years ago: Maeve, Ela, Nina, Lucas and Lili. Watching them grow from small kids to smart teens who know their faith has been wonderful! But, just like all our other teens, they need to know that their faith formation doesn’t stop at Confirmation. I once heard the saying: “God can’t drive a parked car.” In other words, we have to keep moving in our faith. We have to practice, participate, learn and do! But all too often, young teens ‘sit in park’. It’s up to us: as parishioners, as parents, friends and family, to keep our youngest of the flock active in our church. Parents need to encourage attending mass as a family, participating in church activities, watching “Formed” movies on TV together, and engaging in family prayer. Teens are also welcome to join the “Spirit Squad”, the Ascension Youth Group, where young people are brought together to have fun, learn about our church, pray and attend mass together, and engage in community service activities. This past year the Spirit Squad worked on opening the homeless shelter for the season; cleaning the cots, organizing the cookware, folding the linens. We also ran the entire shelter three times; shopping, preparing, cooking, setting up the beds and tables, serving, cleaning up and visiting with the guests. We sorted over 100 boxes of toiletries and distributed them to the poor, the elderly, the homeless and the new mothers’ group in our neighborhood. We raised over $600 for “Guiding Eyes for the Blind.” We visited the elderly, helped with younger kids in the religious education program, organized clothing donations for the homeless. We helped with Christmas for a family whose Dad is facing deportation - everything from a beautifully decorated tree to gifts as wonderful as a Nintendo Switch! We participated in NYC’s interfaith youth group called The Imagine Society (www.theimaginesociety.org/service), we assisted in collecting medical supplies for the mission and we helped the parish with the set-up and breakdown of chairs and tables for events. Most importantly, we were awarded a generous grant through the “Feeding Our Neighbors” program with Catholic Charities, and, together with kids from Ascension Religious Education and Ascension School, distribute food twice a month to the needy of our neighborhood. We are the only pantry in NYC run exclusively by kids! We also have fun - trips, bowling, museums, basketball and pizza! If you’d like your child to be part of the Spirit Squad (only open to kids who have been Confirmed) please pick up an application in the Rectory or contact me. We are also in need of help, monetary donations or time volunteering (chaperoning). Your help keeps our kids moving in their faith! The Ascension Church Religious Education classes begin the week of September 8 (Sunday) and some program levels are offered as well on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Saturdays. We offer 15 different levels of classes from PreK3 through high school, including Special Education and Spanish language classes. Queridos Feligreses y Amigos de la Ascensión,
Acabo de completar mi sexto año aquí en la Ascensión y esta pri-mavera fui afortunada de enseñar a la clase final para la confirma-ción a algunos de los mismos estudiantes a quienes le enseñé la primera clase para la primera comunión hace seis años: Maeve, Ela, Nina, Lucas y Lili. ¡Viéndolos crecer desde pequeños a inteli-gentes adolescentes que conocen su fe ha sido maravilloso! Pero como todos nuestros otros adolescentes, necesitan saber que su formación de fe no se detiene en la confirmación.
Una vez, escuché el dicho: “Dios no puede conducir un auto esta-cionado.” En otras palabras, tenemos que seguirnos moviendo en nuestra fe. ¡Tenemos que practicar, participar, aprender y hacer! Pero muy a menudo, adolescentes jóvenes están “estacionados.” Nos toca a nosotros: como feligreses, como padres de familia, ami-gos y demás familia, mantener a los más jóvenes del rebaño acti-vos en nuestra iglesia. Los padres de familia necesitan alentar a asistir a misa como familia, a participar en actividades de la iglesia, a ver películas en la televisión (FORMED) juntos y orar juntos como familia. Los adolescentes también son bienvenidos a hacerse miembros del “Escuadrón del Espíritu” (Spirit Squad), grupo juve-nil de la Ascensión, en el cual la gente joven se junta para divertir-se y participar en servicios de actividades comunitarias.
Este pasado año, el Escuadrón del Espíritu trabajo en la apertura de la temporada del albergue para los desamparados, limpiando las camas plegables, organizando los utensilios de cocina, doblan-do las sábanas. Nosotros también corrimos el refugio entero tres veces; haciendo compras, preparando, cocinando, preparando las camas y mesas, sirviendo, limpiando y visitando con los huéspedes. Ordenamos más de 100 cajas de artículos de tocador y se los dis-tribuimos a los pobres, los ancianos, los desamparados y al grupo de nuevas madres en nuestra vecindad. Recaudamos más de $600 para “Guiding Eyes for the Blind” (Guías de ojos para los ciegos). Visitamos a los ancianos, ayudamos con los más pequeños en el programa de educación religiosa, organizamos donaciones de ropa para los desamparados. ¡Ayudamos con la Navidad para una fami-lia cuyo padre enfrenta la deportación -- todo, desde un árbol bellamente decorado hasta regalos tan maravillosos como un Nin-tendo Switch! Participamos en el grupo juvenil ecuménico llama-do the Imagine Society (la Sociedad de la Imaginación – www.theimaginesociety.ord/service), ayudamos a recoger suminis-tros médicos para la misión y ayudamos a la parroquia armando y desarmando sillas y mesas para los eventos. De más importancia, se nos otorgó una generosa beca a través del programa “Feeding Our Neighbors” (Dando de comer a nuestros vecinos) de las Cari-dades Católicas y juntos con niños del Programa de Educación Religiosa y la Escuela de la Ascensión, distribuimos comida dos veces al mes a los necesitados de nuestra vecindad. ¡Somos la úni-ca despensa en NYC exclusivamente dirigida por niños!
También nos divertimos – ¡viajes, juegos, museos, baloncesto y pizza! Si le gustaría que su niño(a) sea parte del Escuadrón del Espíritu (solo para niños y niñas que han sido confirmados), haga el favor de recoger una solicitud en la rectoría o póngase en con-tacto conmigo. También necesitamos ayuda, donaciones moneta-rias o tiempo voluntario (como chaperones). ¡Su ayuda manten-drá a nuestros niños moviéndose con su fe!
Las clases de Educación Religiosa de la Iglesia de la Ascensión co-mienzan el 8 de septiembre (domingo) y algunos niveles del pro-grama son ofrecidos también los martes, miércoles o sábados. Ofrecemos 15 diferentes niveles de clases desde PreK3 hasta la escuela secundaria, incluyendo Educación Especial y clases en es-pañol. Ascension Culinary Institute (ACI) Calling all youth, ages 10 – 21, interested in being part of the team at the Ascension Culinary Institute (ACI). This is the 12th year ACI is accepting applications for the summer/fall program. If you’re interested in cooking, experiencing new foods and culture, learning cooking techniques, being part of a team and having fun while being safe, this is the program for you. Classes will start Wednesday evening, 8/7/19 at 6:30 PM in the Ascension Center and every Wednesday after that un-less notified otherwise. Please be prompt and RSVP to let us know you are coming. Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA)
“Behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20) Jesus promised to be with us always, and He is. One of the most important ways He is with us is through the sacra-ments. Through the sacraments, Christ imparts grace and a sharing in His divine life. We read in the Catechism, “The faithful are born anew by Baptism, strengthened by the sac-rament of Confirmation, and receive in the Eucharist the food of eternal life.” Through the sacraments, our faith is renewed, strengthened, deepened and nourished, as Christ Himself continues His Presence with us. If you’re a baptized Catholic adult but never did your First Communion or Confirmation; if you’re Christian from an-other denomination considering becoming Catholic; if you’re from another faith or searching for faith, please con-sider joining RCIA at Ascension. RCIA stands for Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. It is a faith sharing journey for adults who are considering be-coming Catholic or who would like to receive the sacra-ments of initiation - Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation. This journey has roots in the early Church. RCIA meetings include interactive discussions about the different aspects of the Catholic faith. Together, we can question and support each other as we seek to learn more about what it means to be Catholic. Our meetings are led by parishioners and we often have special guests who present on topics related to Christianity and Catholicism. I have been blessed to be a member of the RCIA team in Ascension parish for the past few years. Last year, 13 adults participated in RCIA at Ascension and received sacraments at the Easter Vigil. RCIA at Ascension meets every Tuesday night at 7 PM, be-ginning September 10th, 2019. Meetings last about an hour and a half and we meet in the Church rectory. We have meetings in both Spanish and English. Please join us for what promises to be a spiritually rewarding journey. Thursday, Aug. 15, is a holy day of obligation. Masses will be (Vigil Mass) 6 PM English and 7 PM on Wed., August 14, and noon English and 7 Spanish on the day itself.

Rito de Iniciación Cristiana para Adultos (RICA) “He aquí, yo estoy contigo siempre, hasta el fin del mun-do” (Mateo 28:20). Jesús prometió estar con nosotros siempre, y lo está. Una de las formas más importantes en las que Él está con nosotros es a través de los sacramentos. A través de los sacramentos, Cristo imparte gracia y participación en su vida divina. Lee-mos en el Catecismo: "Los fieles nacen de nuevo por el Bau-tismo, fortalecidos por el sacramento de la Confirmación, y reciben en la Eucaristía el alimento de la vida eterna". A través de los sacramentos, nuestra fe se renueva, se forta-lece, se profundiza y se nutre, como Cristo mismo continúa su presencia con nosotros. Si eres un adulto católico bautizado pero nunca hiciste tu primera comunión o confirmación; si eres cristiano de otra denominación y consideras ser católico; Si eres de otra fe o buscas fe, considera unirte a RICA en Ascensión. RICA significa Rito de Iniciación Cristiana para Adultos. Es un viaje de intercambio de fe para los adultos que están considerando convertirse en católicos o que desean recibir los sacramentos de iniciación: el bautismo, la eucaristía y la confirmación. Este viaje tiene raíces en la Iglesia primitiva. Las reuniones de RICA incluyen discusiones interactivas so-bre los diferentes aspectos de la fe católica.
