Dear Parishioners and Friends of Ascension,
Here at Ascension, we are very blessed to have so many people engaged in so many types of different ministries that directly respond to our call to doing the Corporal Works of Mercy. People have commented to me on many different occasions on the fact that they are proud to be part of a parish that feeds the hungry, and shelters the homeless, cares for the poorest of the poor through our annual mission to the Dominican Republic.
Over the past couple of months, we have expanded our food pantry. Rather than offering food once a month, we now offer food twice a month. In addition to the donations of food we receive on Thanksgiving, we have also received a grant from Catholic Charities that enables us to offer some balanced, and healthier choices of food. We are grateful to the many who have made this possible.
In like fashion, we are proud that we have been able to expand our shelter. The Ascension-Holy Trinity Shelter welcomed its first guests on December 19, 2015. When the shelter was originally moved to Ascension from Holy Trinity, we were opened on Saturday nights during the winter months. Because homelessness continues to grow, particularly here in New York City, we were asked if we would consider opening the shelter a second night. Our volunteers stepped up to the plate. Our shelter now operates on Saturday and Sunday evenings, from September until June.
This weekend, Shauna will speak at all of the English Masses about our parish shelter, and Daniel Corniel will speak at the Spanish Masses on the following weekend. While we are blessed with many wonderful volunteers, we can always use more. Each Saturday and Sunday evening, we offer a warm home cooked meal, a warm bed and hospitality for up to 19 men.
In order for the shelter to operate efficiently, we need 3 sets of volunteers. We need overnight sleepers, cooks, and folks to do set-up and clean-up. The roles of the shelter volunteers are spelled out in greater detail on our parish website -- www.ascensionchurchnyc.org.
I’m grateful to those who are so committed to all of these important ministries, and I pray that this weekend’s talk will inspire many more to consider this very important work.
As we count our many blessings, let’s never forget to pray in earnest for those less fortunate than ourselves.

Queridos Feligreses y Amigos de la Ascensión,
Aquí en la Ascensión, estamos bendecidos de tener tanta gente involucrada en diferentes tipos de ministerios que directamente responden a nuestro llamado a hacer obras corporales de misericordia. La gente me han comentado en muchas ocasiones diferentes sobre el hecho de que se sienten orgullosos de formar parte de una parroquia que alimenta a los hambrientos, le da albergue a los sin hogar y cuida de los más pobres a través de nuestra misión anual a la República Dominicana.
Durante los últimos dos meses, hemos ampliado nuestra despensa de comida. En vez de ofrecer comida una vez al mes, ahora ofrecemos comida dos veces al mes. Además de las donaciones de comida que recibimos en el Día de Acción de Gracias, también hemos recibido una subvención de Caridades Católicas que nos habilita a ofrecer opciones de comidas más balanceadas y saludables. Le estamos agradecidos a los muchos que han hecho esto posible.
De la misma manera, estamos orgullosos de haber podido expandir nuestro albergue. El Albergue de la Ascensión – Santísima Trinidad le dio la bienvenida a sus primeros huéspedes el 19 de diciembre del 2015. Cuando el albergue fue mudado originalmente a la Ascensión de Santísima Trinidad, estábamos abiertos los sábados por la noche -- durante los meses de invierno. Ya que la falta de vivienda continúa creciendo, en particular aquí en la ciudad de Nueva York, se nos pidió que si consideraríamos abrir el albergue una segunda noche. Nuestros voluntarios se mostraron a la altura. Nuestro albergue ahora funciona los sábados y los domingos desde septiembre hasta junio.
Este fin de semana, Shauna hablará en todas las misas en ingles acerca de nuestro albergue parroquial, y Daniel Corniel hablará en las misas en español el próximo fin de semana. 7:30 PM Español Ashes will be distributed after the Gospel and Homily at each Mass. Ashes will be distributed only during Masses, and they will not be distributed apart from Mass.

Lenten Regulations
Fasting -- obliges all Catholics 18 - 59 years old. One meal may be taken. Two small meals may be taken but should not equal the quantity of the larger meal. No eating be-tween meals. Abstinence -- obliges all Catholics 14 years old and old-er. No meat or poultry may be eaten. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and ab-stinence.
All Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence
The parish offers special activities during the Lenten sea-son. Stations of the Cross are held each Friday at 11:30AM before the noon English Mass and at 6:30PM before the 6:30PM Spanish Mass. Simple suppers take place after the 6:00PM Wednesday night beginning March 13.

The Ascension Food Pantry We distribute on the second Wednesday, from 5:30 to 7:30 PM, and the 4th Saturday of every month, from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM. If you are in need of groceries, please bring Federal, State or City issued identifica-tion, as well as your own shopping bag, to the basement level of the Rectory. If you can help with donations, we are in need of dried pota-toes, spaghetti sauce and all canned tomato products, canned tuna, mayonnaise, cereal, peanut butter and jelly, and rice. Thank you for your continued help with the our Food Pantry!

11th Anniversary Ascension Culinary Institute Dinner, March 2nd
It is that time of year again. The Ascension Culinary Insti-tute's annual fundraiser gala is Saturday, March 2nd. As you know, ACI is a program designed for NYC kids from 10 to 21. Aside from learning how to cook and knowing their way around a kitchen, the program builds teamwork, camaraderie, self-confidence and a taste for the unknown. All the money we raise at the March 2nd gala will go to the continuation of the pro-gram. Lots of fun entertainment, raffles, libations--and of course excellent food, all prepared by the ACI class of 2019. Hope you can join us and thank you for your support.
