Dear Parents & Carers

Welcome back to school … finally!

It is so wonderful to see the smiling faces of our students each morning as they

eagerly enter the school grounds ready for another school day. I would like to

offer a special welcome to our new families. I hope your time at Brookman is

positive and rewarding for both your children and yourself.

Covid Times

The extra week off for students was a bit of a setback in starting Term 1. I

thank the staff for their diligence and diversity in re-organising their programs

for the school term.

New Ceilings in B and C Blocks

All the ceilings in the classrooms in B and C Blocks were removed and replaced

over the vacation break. You can imagine the dust that came down from nearly

50-year-old ceilings. Unfortunately, the quality of service from the external

companies involved was not to the standard expected and staff returned to

their rooms in disarray. I thank all staff for their combined efforts in readying

rooms, locating lost or misplaced items and restoring their rooms back to their

former glory. Our cleaners worked tirelessly to clean the rooms to their high

standards. Thank you all. The class rooms look neater, cleaner and fresher.

KindiLink Changes

I would like to offer a warm welcome to Ms Natalie Bandarage a new staff

member who joins us from Port Hedland. Ms Bandarage is an experienced

teacher who will take KindiLink on Tuesdays and Thursdays as well as the

Kindergarten class on Wednesdays.

Edu-Dance is Back!

The students are loving having Edu-Dance back. Please remember to make

your payment as soon as possible.

School Review

Approximately every third year schools have a full review of their teaching and

learning environment and practices. This is an opportunity for us to showcase

the school and its programs. Staff, students, School Board representatives and

the P&C will meet with the reviewers to provide information about our school.

At the completion of the Review a report will be provided which will be placed

on the school web site. I will let the community knows when this is available.

Drop off and Pickup

Please ensure students arrive at school on time and that pickup occurs

promptly at the end of the day. Albeit school is finished our day isn’t and staff

have plenty of work to do after students have gone.

PREFECT ASSEMBLY

The Prefects held the first assembly this year. They will be handing out

various awards throughout 2021 for attendance, uniforms, good behaviour

and more. Honour certificate winner names will be published in the

newsletter. We no longer print recipient photo’s as not all students have

visual permissions. We ask that you also be mindful when posting on social

media that you only include your child. For cyber safety, we suggest that you

do not put your child's name with the school logo as that is identifying data.

STUDENT ARRIVING LATE / LEAVING EARLY

We encourage you to assist your child by being punctual in their

attendance and arrive to class before 8:30am. Students arriving late for

any reason must go to Administration to collect a Late Note and advise

staff of any reason for lateness.

In certain circumstances, such as illness, medical or dental

appointments, it may be necessary to collect your child from school

during school hours. Parents are required to collect and sign the student

out at Administration.

SCHOOL STAR APP – ABSENTEES, NEWS & EVENTS

We request that if your child is absent you advise the office via the school’s

message system (0437 515 023). An SMS is sent to advise parents that according

to school records, the student is absent and no reason has been provided to the

school. For families that have the School Star App installed, text messages from

the school regarding student absences will now be sent through the App and not

your normal 'phone messaging' service. Please ensure notifications for School

Star are kept on. For those who do not have the App installed yet, messages from

the school will still be delivered as a text. Please save this number into your

phone, 0437 515 023 to notify the school of absences.

LITERACY

Welcome back, I hope you all enjoyed the holidays and your extra week! This

year we are again counting the number of nights of home reading and awarding

certificates and prizes. All the children from K to year 6 may record their nights

of home reading in their Home Reading Book. Please encourage your child to

read each night and fill in the log, all our children should be able to reach 200

nights by the end of the year if they start now. The important thing to remember

is to make reading time an enjoyable daily activity.

“As simple as it sounds, ten minutes a day of quality time having fun with a book can make the difference

between someone who struggles with reading and someone who discovers the love and joy of reading.

The ten minutes spent with your child and a book should be the best ten minutes of your child’s day. It is

not about reading today but about coming back to read again tomorrow and the day after.”

Dr Kaye Lowe an Associate Professor of Language and Literacy.

Tina Lawrence, Literacy Teacher

STUDENT LUNCHES

Please provide your child with a healthy morning snack and

lunch in a lunch box or bag clearly marked with their name. We

encourage the use of an insulated carry bag plus cooler block

during hot weather. Lunch is eaten under supervision for the

first 10 minutes of lunchtime at 12:50pm. Lunches brought to

Administration after the start of the day will be kept in the

office for students to collect at breaks. Please remind your child to check at Administration if they do not

have recess or lunch in their bags.

P&C NEWS

The P&C is a group of parents and carers who volunteer their time to

promote the interests of the school. We do this by organising community

events and raising funds to improve facilities and resources at the school. All

parents and carers from the school community are invited to join the P&C

and there are plenty of ways to be involved. The P&C are also responsible for

other roles within the school such as managing the Uniform Shop, School

Banking and Scholastic Book Club.

Getting involved with the P&C is a great way to meet new people and learn more about the school.
