SAFE, RESPECTFUL
LEARNERS
Friday 29th October, 2021
At Abermain Public School Our community is welcomed, involved and valued.
Our students are safe, engaged and achieve personal success. Our staff build positive relationships and are committed and inspiring.
WELCOME BACK TO ALL OF OUR STUDENTS
WE’VE MISSED YOU
ABERMAIN PUBLIC SCHOOL—Safe, Respectful Learners
Week 4 - Term 4, 2021
We are so excited to have our students and staff back in our classrooms with COVID-safe practices in
place. There were many smiling faces under our masks.
Massive thank you to our parents and carers for their ongoing support during Learning From Home.
With your help and input we ensured student learning continued throughout lockdown.
I need to acknowledge and thank the staff at Abermain Public School again, who went above and
beyond to support and ensure the wellbeing of our students and their families during a challenging
time.
This week students received Principal Awards that had been acknowledged through Dojo posts, thanks
to Miss Trotter's creativity with the creation our digital awards. Thank you Mrs Marquet for ensuring
they were all ready for our students to collect this week.
K-2 students who participated in the Mini-Olympics just before we went into lockdown, were also
acknowledged. Thank you to Mrs Walton for her additional work to ensure the Mini-Olympics took
place and for creating special Mini-Olympic Certificates for each participant. Congratulations to the
following classes on their class participation medals: K/1 F received the Gold medal, 1/2P the Silver
medal and K/1T captured the Bronze medal.
Please find below an extract from a previous email outlining the current procedures and systems in
place at Abermain Public School.
We remain on Level 3 PLUS restrictions.
To ensure the health and safety of our students when they return to school, the following Level 3 plus
Covid-safe practices and systems are in place at Abermain Public School:
Although all gates will be open from 8:45am, parents/carers are asked where possible to leave their
morning drop off until 9:10am so that students can go straight into their classrooms. This will
minimise the number of students on the playground.
Parents/Carers must remain outside school grounds, follow physical distancing guidelines and avoid
gathering at school gates.
In addition to our regular cleaning regimes, high touch areas and hard surfaces including play
equipment, will be cleaned throughout the day.
Student desks will be wiped at the beginning of the school day and throughout the day.
Students will regularly wash and/or sanitise their hands throughout the day, including before eating.
Systems and practices are in place to minimise the number of students accessing the same toilet block
at the same time .
PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
ABERMAIN PUBLIC SCHOOL—Safe, Respectful Learners
Week 4 - Term 4, 2021
Staff will wear masks at all times indoors and carry a mask when outdoors. Masks are strongly
recommended for primary students when indoors.
Systems and practices are in place to minimise the mingling of K – 2 students with those in Years 3 – 6.
These include separate play time activity groups and separate play spaces within the playground.
Students are advised to use private transport to and from school where possible. If students need to
use the bus, they must sanitise before boarding and are strongly encouraged to wear face masks
during their travel.
Parents are to collect students from their previously designated gate to minimise the number of
students and families at each exit point. K – 2 students will exit at 3:10pm, followed by Year 3 – 6
students at 3:15pm.
Assessments are underway across the school to collect information on student progress. All students
were given the opportunity to demonstrate their writing skills, and Stage 1 have completed literacy and
numeracy check-ins this week. Next week our Year 3 and 5 students will also participate in a state-wide
check-in for reading and numeracy. All of this valuable data will allow teaching staff to design
appropriate learning sequences for each child as we move forward.
Our Covid Intensive Learning Program continued during our lockdown period (led by Mrs Hourigan and
the support team) and has recommenced at school this week. Thank you to Mrs Bailey, Ms Kastner and
Miss Morgan.
As a part of our wellbeing framework all students have revisited their PAWS Contracts while re-engaging
with our core values of safety, respect and learning across our school setting. PBL lessons this week have
seen students and staff unpack the new systems and practices in place to support a COVID-safe learning
environment.
Thank you again for your continued support.

COVID Intensive Learning Support Program
Dear Families,
This year, the NSW government introduced a COVID Intensive Learning Support Program to ensure that student learning is supported following the disruptions experienced in 2020. We have been providing this type of support across our school context since Term 1. As we return to face-to face learning, we will be continuing to provide small-group tuition focusing on reading fluency, comprehension, targeted maths support in the areas of addition and whole number, as well as targeted writing sessions.
Small group tuition is an effective way of helping children consolidate key skills, extend their knowledge and understanding and provides an opportunity for them to practise skills and gain independence. This is a practice that we have used across our school for many years.
Students accessing this small group guided teaching and supplementary support will have had this communicated directly with them. However, as our school systems already support small group interventions, please be assured that all students will continue receiving support specifically targeted for their needs.
Our staffing this term includes additional support across all classes, and additional groups in Literacy and Numeracy are being formed to support our continued approach to small group, targeted teaching. Progress will continue to be communicated through our Student Progress Reports and through conversational opportunities.
We are excited to have our students returning and look forward to a successful term ahead.
Please feel free to contact the school if you have any questions.
INTENTION TO APPLY FOR YEAR 7 ENTRY TO A SELECTIVE HIGH
SCHOOL IN 2023
Selective High Schools cater for high achieving academically gifted students who may otherwise be
without sufficient classmates at their own academic and social level. Letters will be sent home with all

would like to have your child considered for Year 7 selective high school entry in 2023.

Important information for parents and students
The Department recognises that family breakdowns take place. However, unless
there is formal notice it is assumed that both parents have shared and equal
parental responsibility for their children and both parents have been involved in
decisions regarding their children’s education. This also means the school
recognises that each parent has equal duties, obligations, responsibilities and
opportunities relating to matters involving the school.
If changes occur in your family relationship which might impact on the
relationship between the school and your family, you should advise the school
immediately. This includes providing copies of any relevant court orders.
