WESLEY MATTHEWS
ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Opening of School Parent Newsletter
2013-2014
August 2013 Volume 1, Issue 1
WELCOME BACK PARENTS 2013-2014
Dear Wesley Matthews Elementary School Family,
After our “ground-breaking” performance on the 2013 FCAT, we would like to welcome you to what promises to be an even more successful school year. During the 2013-2014, our theme is “superheroes,” and our
goal is to reach to infinity and beyond as our “superlearners” come back to our most important mission yet! For our part, we will offer a first-rate educational experience and, in return, ask that you ensure your child’s regular attendance. Your child’s success in school depends on having a solid educational foundation, one that only can be achieved with regular school attendance. We also ask that you make a genuine effort to be involved in your son’s or daughter’s school throughout the year. We are all “called into action!”
Educationally Yours,
DEBORAH DARBONNE Principal

ATTENDANCE
Excused Absences
Excused absences may be granted for
the following reasons: illness, medical
appointments, death in family,
observance of a religious holiday or
service when it is mandated for all
members of that faith, a previously
approved school sponsored event or
activity, or other absences beyond the
control of the parent or student, as
reviewed and approved by the principal
or the principal’s designee. If family
situations occur which require a student
to be absent, please contact your child’s
teacher or the school office. A note
explaining the reason for the absence
must be given to the school.
Unexcused Absences
Absences without a written note will be
labeled “Unexcused.” Ten or more
unexcused absences during a school
year may place the child in jeopardy of
being retained or grades withheld
pending on an administrative screening
and completion of assigned
interventions by the Attendance Review
Committee.
Tardiness
When a child arrives late to school,
he/she must report to the office. A note
or a call from the parent to the teacher
or the office staff regarding the reason
for late arrival will be accepted. A
student is tardy if he/she is not in the
classroom when the bell rings. A
student who is tardy to class not only
places his/her own learning in
jeopardy, but also interrupts the
learning of other students.
Student attendance affects the learning
opportunities for your student. If a child
is not in class on time, he/she does not
receive the full benefits of instruction
and may experience difficulty learning
and applying the skills necessary for
success.

Why Join the PTA?
What is PTA? Why join PTA? The number one reason to join the Parent Teacher Association is to benefit your child. In
doing so, you also help your school. But there are many more PTA advantages:
Get Connected. There’s no better way to know what’s happening in your school.
Discover Great Resources. The PTA offers a variety of programs designed for parents as well as students.
Tap into a Network. PTA functions are opportunities to meet other parents and teachers, building rapport and discussing
issues that are on your mind. You can share ideas, concerns, and experiences.
Watch Yourself Grow. By volunteering with your PTA, you put your skills and hobbies to use for a noble cause—your
child and all children in the community.
Speak Up. PTA can be a way for you to more effectively suggest change at your child’s school.
Witness Improvement. By getting involved at your child’s school you’ll be part of the solution, helping make positive
changes. Local PTAs play an important role in fundraising to provide building improvements, curriculum-based programs,
and social events.
Be a Role Model. By becoming a PTA member, you’ll be demonstrating to your child the importance you place on
education.
Enjoy Substantial Benefits. Individuals and local units can take advantage of a host of benefits from PTA membership
including discounts and offers from member benefits providers and sponsors, magazine subscriptions, leadership training,
e-newsletters and much more.
