Welcome Autumn!
OUTDOOR SERVICE
October 4th 5:30pm
On Sunday October 4th at 5:30 pm, we will hold a special outdoor service. The
service will include transfer of membership for Jo Ann and James C. and child
dedications for Sarah and Caroline B.
We will observe the protocols set forth through consultation with a local
epidemiologist. This includes wearing a mask for set-up and clean-up, bringing
your own chair or blanket, and keeping 10 feet apart from people not in your
household. The bathrooms will be available for emergency use only.
We ask you to join us at this outdoor worship as we celebrate new life and growth in our congregation. The service will also be available on Facebook LIVE and on our YouTube channel for those who can’t attend in-person.
Visiting Pastors
Rev. Paul Mundey (Annual Conference Moderator), has offered a
pre-recorded sermon, on the theme of Rest during this difficult
time. This service will be offered on October 18th.
As we continue our 125th Anniversary celebration,
we will welcome back Rev. Jeff Carter who will join us on October

And Jesus said to the disciples, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place
and get some rest.” Mark 6:31
In the midst of everything that is happening in our world today, it’s important to find time to
be with Jesus in a quiet place to rest, to pray, to listen and to commune with God. October 18-
25, I will be able to attend a personal, spiritual retreat on my own with Jesus. During the week,
I will have the opportunity to go to the Retreat House at Holy Cross Abbey in Berryville, VA.
I will use this time to rest, to pray, and to listen. I will also use this time to get outdoors and
hike awhile. I will use this time to discern how God is guiding me. I will use this time to
reflect, to be renewed, to be spiritually re-centered. We have been through so much in these
past six months… a pandemic, a greater awareness of systemic racism, and economic
hardships, to name a few. We’ve been navigating new ways to do ministry together, new ways
to be community together, and new ways to love and support one another.
I pray that as I get some time away for a retreat… that you, too, will find moments to retreat, to
rest, to pray, to listen. Maybe it’s a short walk through your neighborhood. Maybe it’s time on
your deck reading. Use this time for spiritual centering and listening for the still, small voice of
God.
Whatever you need to do to step away from the noise of
our society, the stresses of these days, or the brokenness
of this world, please take time to do so… make time to
do so. May we all use this month as a month for retreat
and for renewal to reconnect with God.

PSA: If you choose to walk with others, please observe safety precautions by
wearing a mask and social distancing.
Brothers and Sisters Program
The new school year has begun, but it is not
one that seems familiar. Most of our young
folks are having their classes online from
home. We realize there may be a lot of
uncertainty and anxiety as this new way of
learning begins. The Deacons have been
discussing ways that we can help families this
fall. We are looking for members of our
congregation that would be willing to be a
“Study Buddy” for one of our young people. We don’t know exactly
what the needs might be. However, if you are interested in giving it a
try, we would like to know your name, a subject or subjects and the
grade level(s) that you feel comfortable helping with. Please send this
information to the church office via email
at [email protected] or leave a voicemail at 703-368-4783.
Study Buddy Program
The Deacons will be putting together "The Brothers and Sisters Program." The program is designed to help the members, who wish to participate, in an intentional opportunity to connect with others within the congregation; which they have had less opportunity
to do during the pandemic. Anyone who opts into the program will be matched up with someone else in a random drawing. Two people will be paired for two months, then the pairings will be redrawn. On the second rotation you can still work with your first pairing as well as having the second pairing. If you are interested in the program let the office know or e-mail Leonard Pumphrey at [email protected].

Food Helpline Fights Hunger The Problem: Since COVID-19 hit this area, many people in the local community have suddenly found themselves out of work and struggling to feed their families. For many of these households, this is the first time they have ever been in this situation. If this sounds like you, or someone you know who is facing food insecurity, the Food Helpline is available to assist! The helpline is part of the Community Feeding Task Force, a partnership between Manassas, Manassas Park and Prince William County governments to help the community meet the need for food during this pandemic. Over 50 food pantries throughout the community are partnered with the task force to provide food assistance. ACTS and Volunteer Prince William are also partnering with the task force with volunteer support in the central warehouse, food pantries and Food Helpline. The Food Helpline is available to anyone who lives in Manassas, Manassas Park and Prince William County. Those in need of help can call 703.794.4668 Monday through Friday, 9am to 4pm. Volunteers are ready to assist; Spanish speaking volunteers are also available. Callers to the helpline are given a brief over the phone screening, then they are matched to at least three food pantries located closest to where they live. Callers do not have to income qualify to receive assistance. Senior citizens are referred to ACTS or SERVE (depending on where they live) to be set up to receive regular home food deliveries. This will protect seniors, consid-ered at high risk for the pandemic, from having to visit grocery stores and further risk their health. Calls from those who are low on food or out of food can be set up to receive a one-time emergency home food delivery, along with referrals to food pantries where they can continue to receive assistance. Food packages are assembled based on family size and any health or dietary re-strictions. The Food Helpline was set up in late March and it is anticipated the helpline will be operating through the end of this year. All calls are confidential, and no questions other than establishing where the caller lives are asked. Please do not be shy about using this resource, it is there to help you! If you have any questions, please contact Jan Hawkins – she is listed in the church directory.

June Sadd Kline, age 92, died Thursday, September 10, 2020 at her home in Catlett, Virginia,
surrounded by her daughters and family.
Mrs. Kline was born June 18, 1928 in D.C. to the late Walter Charles Sadd and Mabel
Eleanor Brown. She lived in and around Manassas throughout her life and treasured her
family, her church, and hot fudge sundaes.
June graduated from Osbourn High School as Valedictorian in 1946. She earned a
Bachelor’s of Arts degree from Bridgewater College in 1950 with a double major in
Elementary Education and Psychology. Education remained close to her heart throughout her
life. She rejoiced in the varied accomplishments of her children and grandchildren.
In 1950, June married Paul Kline in the front yard of Tudor Hall, her family home in Ma-
nassas. They made their home on the farm near Broad Run on the outskirts of Manassas,
where they raised a family of seven children. They opened Kline's Freeze (1965) and Kline's
Drive-In (1969) in Manassas, where they served ice cream, milkshakes, banana splits, and
footlong hotdogs to generations of loyal customers. Mrs. Kline mentored several decades of
young people who worked in her restaurants, encouraging them to work hard and live well.
She is remembered fondly throughout the Manassas community by those who worked their
first job or tasted their first ice cream cone at one of the Kline’s restaurants.
Mrs. Kline delighted in watching her 18 grandchildren grow, study, and start families of
their own. She enjoyed sharing in the life milestones and day-to-day activities of her 27 great
grandchildren. She enjoyed traveling with Paul and her siblings, and later, with other family
members. At ninety years old, she volunteered as a Sunday School teacher at the Manassas
