1. Welcome and Introduction to Sports Development and Coaching.
Welcome to the Foundation Degree in Sports Development & Coaching. Opportunities are provided to develop your knowledge of the science behind coaching across a range of modules that allow you to apply the underpinning theories and put them into practice. Learning methods include working as part of a group or as an individual throughout the course to develop your employability and academic skills. Working with local school groups and organising events within the community will be part of your course. You will also conduct lab-based experiments e.g. dissections and practical fitness testing and training to investigate the effects of exercise on the body systems.
The course has been designed with the UK Coaching Certificate guidelines at its core, so students will be engaged in the advancement of their coaching ability, while gaining the foundation degree. The course will provide opportunities for students to gain relevant NGBs in sport, (e.g. FA Level 1 & HSLA), fitness (e.g. CYQ L2 Gym Instructor & L3 Personal Trainer) and outdoor (e.g. MIAS Mountain Bike Leaders or GNAS Level 1 Archery).
Valuable work experience is undertaken as part of the course to develop your employability skills and experience to ensure that you meet the needs of your future career choice and employers.
This programme has been designed to equip you with the skills and knowledge base required to work in your chosen specialism or other graduate opportunities. It is also a platform from which you can undertake additional vocational and academic qualifications.
This Programme Quality handbook contains important information including: The approved programme specification Module records
Note: the information in this handbook should be read in conjunction with the current edition of the College / University Student handbook available at (college to add link) which contains student support based information on issues such as finance and studying at HE along with the University’s Student Handbook - https://www1.plymouth.ac.uk/studenthandbook and your Teaching, Learning and Assessment Handbook available on your programme virtual learning environment.

Brief Description of the Programme
The programmes are designed to give a coherent mix of theory and its application. To this end the teaching and assessment strategies aim to develop the independent learner over the two years, and include an increasing amount of student-led seminars and problem based learning as the programmes progress. Delivery methods include practical application from the commencement of the programmes, in terms of practical coaching in real life situations in addition to workshops and discussion groups. Other methods include lectures; small group classroom delivery, student and staff led seminars, structured visits and visiting speakers. In this way it is intended that learners develop, active learning takes place and less support is required
Aims of the Programme:The programme is intended to: ……..
Provide students with the key principles and concepts of sports coaching and leadership as it applies to the sports industry.
Develop management skills that are generic within the sport, recreation and leisure industries. Equip students with the necessary skills and qualifications, which will allow them to gain
purposeful employment within the industry and/or to allow them to progress to further study. Ensure that graduates of the programme meet the expectations of employers as competent
sports coaches who can apply sport scientific, management and business principles to practice,

and predict the outcomes of their actions. Provide students with a range of practical skills and competencies relevant to a career in the
adventure sports and outdoor industry. Enable graduates to acquire and demonstrate a range of academic and study skills to allow them
to proceed to Honours (level 5) and to continue with learning throughout their life
Programme Intended Learning Outcomes:By the end of this programme the student will be able to:
Apply a thorough knowledge of the key principles, scientific disciplines and concepts related to the domain of Sports Coaching.
Develop significant insight into the methods, techniques and philosophies adopted by coaches to provide safe and effective sport activities.
Use a range of techniques to initiate and undertake analysis of information and propose solutions to problems arising from that analysis in both team and individual sports
Demonstrate a level of understanding in relation to the ethical implications with the industry. Evaluate sources of relevant information, predict and communicate effectively in a wide range of
forms to specialist and non-specialist audiences. Use scientific and innovative approaches to solve problems and make reasoned judgements. Understand the need to undertake further training, develop existing skills and acquire new
competencies in line with the concept of lifelong learning to enable them to assume responsibility within organisations.
Progression Route(s)
Approved ‘progression route(s)’ are those where successful achievement on a programme enables a student to progress onto a stage of another Plymouth University programme.
There may however, be factors that limit the availability of a place on a progression route in any one year. If a progression route place is not available in the first year in which a student wishes to progress to Plymouth University, a place is guaranteed within three years. Should a Plymouth University progression route be withdrawn, the timing of the programme closure will either be timed so as to allow progression for existing students who wish to progress immediately onto a Plymouth University programme (excluding periods of interruption or repeat years of study) or appropriate alternative solutions will be found.Progression opportunities with institutions other than Plymouth University carry an increased element of risk. It is necessary for the delivering partner institution to obtain formal agreement from that institution to guarantee progression for existing students on the programme.
BCs (Hons) Sports Performance Coaching – delivered at Cornwall College. The course aims to develop and extend conceptual knowledge behind coaching and sports performance. You will study essential modules of Athlete Development, Applied Coaching including a specialist area of research of your choice. The objective of the course is to extend sound academic principles combined with practical application to enhance sporting performance of the individual along with dynamic coaching principles.
Please note there is a deadline for progression applications (circa mid-January with the actual date determined annually) and places maybe subject to availability. If you progress to the final stage of a

Plymouth University programme then your stage two aggregate mark (from your level 5 modules) will account for 30% and your progression stage (level 6 modules) aggregate mark will account for 70% of your final degree classification. (if direct entry programmes are commented on then it needs to be clear that whether those level-5 marks are considered will depend on the specific route).
