What do we mean by syllable and stress?Syllable-
“A syllable is apart of a word that contains a single vowel or sound and that is pronounced as
a unit.” For example –Book has one syllable.Stress-
“word stress is the term used to describe the accent or emphasis given to a particular syllable
of a word.”For example- father answer begin

Common patterns of stress-
1. Many common nouns and adjectives will have stress on the first syllable. For
example- people, mother, happy etc.2.In words with prefixes such as-be,in,dis,
ex,un etc.the stress is always on the second or third syllable. Example-Begin, Because,
Examine,Dislike,Undeerstand

3. Suffixes, such as-ly,-ible,-ory,-ical,-ic are never stressed.Examples-
lovely,impossible,category,logical,economic.4. Compound words which are formed with two
nouns are common. They are stressed on the first noun.Examples-
Newspaper,Grandfather,Grandmother.5.Usually prepositions conjunctions will have no
stress because they are not content words. Example-on, in, and etc.

Intonation: “Intonation is the way that the voice rises and falls as the speaker speaks.”For example-What’s your name?
