ReviewCreation: God reveals His goodness through creation and His mercy in response to sin.

Patriarchs: God reveals His response to the faithful-ness of men (Job, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph) and His covenant promises to them as they chose to trust in Him.Exodus: God liberates Israel from bondage, then uses Moses to shepherd them in the wilderness while shaping them into a nation holy to Himself through the covenant power of His Law.Conquest: Moses passes his leadership role to Joshua who, by relying on God’s presence and power, leads them to take possession of and settle the Promised Land over a thirty year period.

The Book of Joshua• Written by Joshua during his time (death recorded

by Eleazar)• Records the conquests of Canaan/other occupation

events:• Renewal of the covenant• Salvation of Rahab• Defeat of Jericho• Failures at Ai and Gibeon• Division of the land among 12 tribes

• Begins with God’s promise to be with Joshua and announcement that he had already been given the land

• Ends with Joshua’s challenge to the nation to forsake the small gods of Canaan and follow the LORD only

• Key verse: Joshua 1:8 - “This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have success.”

Key TruthTrusting and following God, even in the times when it

seems to defy human logic, opens the way for His people to experience

mighty victories.

Context

Fulfillment of the Promise

Joshua 1 - 5

Page 14: Welcome

Fulfillment of the Promise

A New Leader (Josh1:1-2, 5-6) God raises up Joshua to lead the

nation into the Promised Land

God promises His presence, guidance and victory

Page 15: Welcome

Fulfillment of the PromiseA New Land (Josh 5:8-12) God leads the children of

Israel “through” the Jordan

God calls Israel to renew the covenant of circumcision and keep the Passover

God causes the manna to stop when they partake of the produce of the land

Page 16: Welcome

Fulfillment of the PromiseA New Lord (Josh 2:8-13, 5:13-15) The Canaanites feared God (Rahab’s confession)

Captain of the LORD’s host gives Joshua instructions for taking Jericho• Jericho is defeated before Israel by God’s divine power

Page 17: Welcome

Failures of the People

Joshua 6 - 9

Page 18: Welcome

Failures of the PeoplePersonal Failure (Josh 6:18)

Achan takes for himself banned plunder from Jericho

His actions, combined with Joshua’s presumption, lead to Israel’s defeat at Ai

God exposes Achan’s sin and judges him harshly, teaching Israel about the high cost of sin

Page 19: Welcome

Failures of the PeopleCorporate Failure (Josh 9:3-6 & 14-15)

The Gibeonites trick Israel into believing they are not from Canaan

Israel fails to pray and seek God’s counsel concerning their request for a treaty

Israel mistakenly makes a covenant with Gibeon, a Canaanite tribe, complicating the problem of occupying the land

Page 20: Welcome

Faith in the Power of God

Joshua 2 & 10Hebrews 11

Page 21: Welcome

Faith in the Power of GodA Woman of Faith

Rahab expresses great faith in God by her testimony and actions• As a result, her family is spared• She is included in the genealogy of

Christ (Mt 1:5)

Her knowledge of God was limit-ed, but her faith was genuine and active, and God preserved her• Hebrews 11:31

Page 22: Welcome

Faith in the Power of GodA Prayer of Faith (Josh 10:12-14)

Joshua and the armies of Israel con-front an allied force of Canaanite na-tions at Gibeon

God gives them over to Israel in a rout

God grants Joshua’s request to extend the day to fully prosecute their victory over the Amorite kings

Joshua eventually defeats 31 kings and divides the land among all the tribes of Israel

Page 23: Welcome

ConclusionsGod’s guidance and blessing do not mean

that His people will not have battles, for without battles there can be no victory!

One person’s sin can affect the entire covenant community

Prayerlessness in decision-making can lead to destructive decisions

God’s ways can sometimes run contrary to human logic, but God’s ways are always best

What does this lesson teach about God? Man? Sin? Redemption?

God

His Promises Still Apply Today>However, they must be appro-priated by faith in order to do us any good

Man

Can Come to God thru Belief in Him and have a Relationship with Him>That belief can come from hear-ing the Word of God>But, others can be swayed thru the mighty works of God

Sin

Demands Resolution>God harshly judges the one who deliber-ately sins and brings destruc-tive conse-quences on His community

God Delights in Forgiveness>Forgave the repentant har-lot with a limited know-ledge OF God, but a believing faith IN God

• What are the consequences in the life of a Christian who deliberately sins?• How does deliberate sin affect the community of

believers?• How can a church avoid God’s judgment for the

deliberate sins of one of it’s members?• Do churches today take sin seriously? (Why not?)

• Israel stumbled in making a treaty with Gibeon without first praying. How did God use this mistake to benefit the people, despite their error?• What does this tell us about how God views

errors we make as believers?• How do Christians today make covenants with

the world that compromise their witness?

BIBLE KNOWLEDGE QUIZThe Books of Joshua and Judges(1pt)

How much time elapsed between the acceptance of the covenant with the Gibeonites and the discovery that they were actually living in Canaan? “It came about at the end of three days after they

had made a covenant with them, that they heard that they were neighbors and that they were living within their land.” (Josh 9:16)

What did the tribes of Reuben, Gad and Manasseh do to pro-voke the anger of the other tribes on the west side of the Jordan? “Thus says the whole congregation of the LORD,

‘What is this un-faithful act which you have committed against the God of Israel, turning away from following the LORD this day, by building your-selves an altar, to rebel against the LORD this day? (Josh 22:16)

What did Judah do to King Adoni-bezek that he had done to 70 kings he had captured? “Adoni-bezek said, ‘Seventy kings with their

thumbs and their big toes cut off used to gather up scraps under my table; as I have done, so God has repaid me.’ “ (Judges 1:7)
