WELCOME!

As we refrain from physically gathering due to concerns about the COVID-19 Coronavirus outbreak, we offer special online worship. The world may be in a state of panic, but the Church of Jesus is a place of refuge where we know God’s peace. We gather today to hear God’s Word and to rejoice in his message of comfort and forgiveness, of life and salvation. We are honored that you are joining us for our online worship.

This service folder will enable you to follow along and participate in the service wherever you are. You are also welcome to use your personal hymnal and Bible at home.

You may wish to sing along with the hymns or simply reflect upon the text—this is the beauty of our hymns with a strong, Christ-centered message!

Page numbers for readings refer to their location in the pew Bibles at church, and they may not correspond to the version of the Bible you are using at home.

EASTER 3

APRIL 26, 2020

Victorious! Repent and believe

Peter preached a powerful sermon. He testified to everything Jesus had done - things of which he was an eyewitness. He confirmed the message of Jesus himself: Repent and believe the good news.

This promise is for you and for your children, for all people far and near. Jesus is the Savior of the world. His death is for all, and his resurrection is the seal of God's approval on everything Jesus accomplished.

Jesus' victory becomes our personal victory as we repent of our sins and hold to Jesus for the gift of eternal life. The Good News goes out into all the world: Repent and believe!

INVOCATION

M: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

M: Christ is risen!

C: He is risen indeed!

M: This is the day the Lord has made;

C: Let us rejoice and be glad in it.

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION FOR EASTER

M: Dear friends, let us approach God with a true heart and confess our sins, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to forgive us.

C: Lord of life, I confess that I am by nature dead in sin. For faithless worrying and selfish pride, for sins of habit and sins of choice, for the evil I have done and the good I have failed to do, You should cast me away from your presence forever. O Lord, I am sorry for my sins. Forgive me, for Jesus’ sake.

M: If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins.

C: But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.

Absolution is the announcement of

forgiveness, an announcement that

is as valid and certain as if Christ

himself spoke it. Jesus said, “Peace be

with you. If you forgive anyone his

sins, they are forgiven.”

The invocation and sign of the cross are

both reminders of our baptism, at which we were

joined to Christ and made members of the family of our

Triune God.

M: The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.

C: But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

M: In the name of Jesus your sins are forgiven. Christ is risen!

C: He is risen indeed! Alleluia!

PRAYER OF THE DAY

M: Let us pray: O God, by the humiliation of your Son you lifted up this fallen world from the despair of death. By his resurrection to life, grant your faithful people gladness of heart and the hope of eternal joys; through your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

FIRST LESSON Acts 2:14a, 36-47 Pew Bible p. 1692

PSALM OF THE DAY Psalm 30

music of Marty Haugen

Each refrain is sung as noted. The cantors sing the verses.

Refrain

I’ll praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me. You’ve raised my soul from the dead,

You prevented my enemies From gloating over me.

Refrain

I called to you for help, you answered me. You spared me from the grave.

You turned my wailing to dancing, My heart now sings to my God.

Refrain

Peter addresses the crowd, calling

people to repent and find forgiveness in

Jesus.

SECOND LESSON 1 Peter 1:17-21 Pew Bible p. 1887

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Luke 24:32

Refrain

The minister sings the verse:

Our hearts were burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us.

Refrain

GOSPEL Luke 24:13-35 Pew Bible p. 1642

M: The Gospel according to Luke chapter 24.

C: Glory be to you, O Lord!

After the Gospel:

M: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C: Praise be to you, O Christ!

We were not redeemed with gold or silver but with the precious blood of Christ.

Jesus explains the meaning of his resurrection to two disciples on the road to Emmaus.

To acclaim the Gospel is to express enthusiastic approval of it. Our King is coming to us in the Gospel as we hear the words and works of Jesus. Previously known as “The Verse of the Day,” this title will be used in the 2021 hymnal. These acclamations are intended to point the worshiper to the day’s Gospel.

SERMON Acts 2:14a, 36-47 Pew Bible p. 1692

You are a miracle

APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

CLOSING HYMN In Christ Alone Christian Worship Supplement 752, stanzas 3–4

There in the ground his body lay, Light of the world by darkness slain; Then bursting forth in glorious day Up from the grave he rose again!

And as he stands in victory, Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me. For I am his and he is mine—Bought with the precious blood of Christ.

No guilt in life, no fear in death, This is the pow’r of Christ in me; From life’s first cry to final breath, Jesus commands my destiny.

No pow’r of hell, no scheme of man Can ever pluck me from his hand; Till he returns or calls me home, Here in the pow’r of Christ I’ll stand.

Call News Dear Members of Emmanuel,

I received a divine call to serve at Trinity Lutheran School in West Bend, Wisconsin. This call is to serve as principal and teacher of grades 7 and 8. During the upcoming days, I now have the opportunity to deliberate both my call here at Emmanuel and the call to West Bend, determining where my talents and abilities can best be used.

Without a doubt, our country is experiencing some very trying and challenging times, and the Gospel message continually needs to be shared and proclaimed whether in Wisconsin or Arizona. I ask you to keep my family and me as well as both schools in your prayers. I am confident the Lord will lead me to a decision that will allow me to continue serving him and his lambs.

In Christ, Craig Kiecker

Olson family update Mr. Andrew Olson accepted the call to serve as our sixth grade teacher next year. Here is an update from him on behalf of his family (wife Bethany, daughters Chloe and Norah):

Just a quick update from us here in Milwaukee. We have been extremely blessed over the last few weeks and were able to sell our house here and also have had our offer accepted on a house in South Mountain Phoenix. Our closing date here is June 15, and closing date in Phoenix looks like it will be around June 19. We are expecting then to have our whole family out by June 20. The moving truck is booked and will be ready during that time as well. We look forward to meeting everyone when we get down there. Hopefully by then more things will be available, and the virus will have been controlled.

Church office hours At least through April 30, the church plans to maintain regular office hours from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Emmanuel members may call and talk with a live voice or stop by during those times. We attempt to maintain social distance with anyone who enters the office. Outside of regular office hours, you may phone the church and leave a message for any of the pastors or office staff. For direct contact information for the pastors, please see the back page of the service folder.

Emmanuel Facebook page The church’s and the school’s Facebook pages are merged into one under the name Emmanuel Lutheran Church, K-8 School, and Sonshine Preschool. Regular updates are being posted from both church and school. Visit the page, like and share posts, stay connected, and help communicate our ministry among the community.

If you are able to provide assistance in some way, contact the church office to donate time or materials. Special gifts may also be given to the Emmanuel Special Assistance Fund, which is a regular fund the church uses to assist people in physical need.
