The Australian Curriculum• 2012 – All schools nation wide are implementing the areas of

English, Mathematics, Science, History and Geography.

• The Australian Curriculum sets out the core knowledge, understanding, skills and general capabilities that are important for all Australian students.

• At Ferny Grove SS we have a focus of English and Maths being our core business to build strong literate and numerate foundations with the students. We will focus on additional KLAs per term to be assessed, and immerse the students in the other learning areas through literacy and numeracy activities. This term our focus area is Science.

been returned.

Reading at home with your child is based on improving their reading skills (accuracy, fluency, comprehension etc.) and to encourage reading for enjoyment.

Homework – Sight Words• ”Sight words” is the term for words that readers

should recognise instantly. Recognition is important because sight words are so frequently used—making up approximately 50 to 75% of all words we are likely to encounter.

• Your child needs to be able to recall these automatically (no sounding out!) and in a different order from the list given to them.

• If your child has mastered these as sight words, it is fun to work on them as spelling.
