DSM-V DiagnosisBinge Eating Disorder
Criteria include overeating at least 1x week for 3 months; combined with a lack of control, marked feelings of distress and 3 or more of the following:
Eating much more rapidly than normal
Eating until feeling uncomfortably full
Eating large amounts of food even when not physically hungry
Eating alone because of being embarrassed by how much one is eating
Feeling disgusted with one’s self, depressed or very guilty afterwards

Do you see yourself or your loved one in what I just shared?
If you said yes, likely, these behaviors have been going on for awhile.
Often, the focus becomes on the food or the weight, rather than getting to the heart of the matter to the deeper problems going on underneath.

Dieting Culture
“How would you feel if you failed at something over and over again and the experts kept prescribing a treatment with a 95% failure rate, then blamed you when it didn’t work? How would you feel?”
(Dana Armstrong, RD,CDE, Moving Away From Diets)

3 Immediate Interventions
Keep a food journal ~ record all of your food + feelings
Create an “intervention” for the time that you typically binge~ develop new structures
Stop eating in front of the TV~ eat at the table with no distractions

Longer-Term Strategies
Create lifestyle changes which include understanding how the eating behaviors serve as a coping skill for you
Use support: a therapist, a nutritionist, a group, loved-ones

Tips to Loved One’s
Educate yourself through available resources
Attend a therapy session
Ask them what they need from you
Focus on feelings not on food or weight
You cannot make your loved one do anything~ the best help you can provide is to love them where they are every step of the way.
