Situating between two plazas on the North and the East, the building aims to connect the two through programmatically placing the public theatre on the basement level for the North plaza entrance. Furthermore, the building is treated as a carved out solid, in which the voids act as outdoor spaces along a public sequence; whereas the solids are private spaces for the school. The play between solid and void maximizes the experience of people both engaging with the building and with the site.

SACRED SPACE, FLORENCE, ITALY The project is a renovation of the existing Pazzi Chapel at the Basilica di Santa Croce, Florence, Italy. The design aims to create a “sacred space” for both the individuals and the collective. Looking at Parc de La Villette in Paris as a precedent, the design layers the existing Pazzi Chapel grid with the monastery grid to organize a series of vertical blocks for individual meditation and sliding slits on the ground for lighting, as well as a large ground plane for collective gathering.

FRUITS AND DEWSThe project focuses on the culture of the fruit market in Flushing, New York, and its character of acting as a seam between the building and the street. The design facilitates a close dialogue between the fruit market on the ground floor and the library above through lighting and visual connections.

OCCUPYING STREET’S WALL This project is about the relationship between the social order and the building order. Based on the intensive historical research and analysis on Fifth Avenue, NYC, the highest level of the high-rise apartment lives the wealthy, whereas the lower class stays on the lower level. The proposal for a public gallery and cinemas is designed to bring in the people from the Central Park across the street to the highest level of the existing apartment, giving them the same previledge as the wealthy of viewing over the Central Park, as well as creating a closer dialogue between the upper level and lower level.

CITY PALIMPSEST Based on the research on workhouses developed during the 1800s to 1900s in Hoxton, London, which emphasized the idea of working and living under one disciplined community, the project proposes a rectangular strip consisting of a gym and various typologies of housing units, which aim for maximum lighting. The building would enclosed the existing housing complex, forming a private courtyard. In addition to the placement of the building, the play between private and public on the edge of the building would strengthen and enliven the route and connection between the park and the buildings around it.
