SCHOOL REVIEW
This semester our school will undertake our four
yearly review and we will be looking for parents
and students to be a part of some discussion
groups we will undertake. These will contribute to
the school’s self evaluation of our operations over the past four years. More information will be
posted in the newsletter as we learn more dates
etc.
STUDENT BELONGINGS
Please make sure that you name all
items that are bought to school
including toys, lunch boxes, drink bottles, uniform items etc. If items are
found with a legible name then we are
able to return it to your child’s grade.
If an item is accidently taken home by another
child a clearly written name will alert the other
parent that the item does not belong to their child
and should be returned to school the next day.
OVER THE HOLIDAY BREAK
It was really pleasing to see so many families
sensibly using the school grounds over the
holiday period. As always we like to allow families
access to our great resource.
The Blue and Purple Neighbourhoods were painted
over the holidays as well as having shelving units
constructed in most of the neighbourhood
classrooms.
CHINESE NEW YEAR
We wish all our families celebrating
the new year of the pig this week a
wonderful family time, good health
and prosperity for the year ahead.
Pauline Kubat - Principal
It was wonderful to welcome our
students and families to school on
Wednesday and Thursday this week. If you are a new family to our school
a special EVPS welcome to you, we hope your stay
with us is a long and happy one.
10th ANNIVERSARY OF BUSHFIRES
Ten years ago we opened our hearts and our school and supported the students, staff and families of the
Kinglake bushfires. We had students and staff from
Flowerdale, Kinglake West, Kinglake and
Middle Kinglake Primary schools here for up to two
terms as their schools and towns were made safe
and rebuilt.
BABY NEWS
We were delighted to hear that our Leading Teacher
Allira Wallis and her husband welcomed a healthy
son, Hux last week. He is just beautiful and we
wish the new family lots of love and happiness as
they begin their time as a family of three. We are
looking forward to sharing more
baby news shortly when Vicky
Liassos has her baby.
NEXT SCHOOL COUNCIL MEETING
We look forward to the last meeting of the 2018
School Council on Tuesday 26th February at 7pm.
We will send information out regarding 2019
elections shortly.
PLEASE REMEMBER we are an ‘egg & nut free’ school: no eggs,
peanut butter, nuts or nutella spread to come to school at any
time. Please assist us to keep our students safe. Thank you.
Keep your hands and feet to yourself. Everyday Counts!

5/6 SPORT PROGRAM 2019
VICTORIAN PRIMARY SCHOOL SPORTS TEAM NOMINATIONS 2019
“School Sport Victoria State Team Trial Registrations are open; Australian Football, Netball, Boys Basketball, Girls Basketball and Boys Football (Soccer). A minor change to the process for 2019 is Girls Football (Soccer) will not be required to go through stages of selection. All nominees will go straight to State trials. These trial registrations close Friday, 1 March 2019. You can find all the details via School Sport Victoria’s website. http://www.ssv.vic.edu.au/team-vic . If you are looking for a document that details the process please download the “Team Vic Online Registrations Process. This will give you all the information you need to know before registering. These trials are for emerging athletes who have reached a certain standard. The trials are NOT “come and try” opportunities. They are a process for selecting a Team Vic State Team going to School Sport Australia national Championships. Competition for spots is extremely competitive considering teams are chosen from students from right across Victoria.
If you are interested in nominating your child, you should present to me in writing outlining your child’s sporting achievements in their selected sport. Please include as much relevant information in your application to the school so that an accurate assessment can be made in regards to whether your child will be nominated or not.
Nominations to the school will close on Thursday February 14th. You and your child will be informed in writing by Thursday February 21
st if they have or have not been nominated in their chosen sport.
If you have any further questions please contact me via email: [email protected]

EVERY DAY COUNTS PRIMARY SCHOOL ATTENDANCE
Going to school every day is the single most important part of your child’s education. Students learn new things at school every day – missing school puts them behind.
SCHOOL IS BETTER WHEN YOUR CHILD IS THERE
Why it’s important
We all want our students to get a great education, and the building blocks for a great education begin with students coming to school each and every day.
If students miss school regularly, they miss out on learning the fundamental skills that will set them up for success in the later years of school.
There is no safe number of days for missing school – each day a student misses puts them behind, and can affect their educational outcomes.
Each missed day is associated with progressively lower achievement in numeracy, writing and reading.
Getting in early
Attendance patterns are established early – a child regularly missing days in kindergarten or in the early years of school will often continue to miss classes in the later years, and receive lower test scores than their classmates.
It’s vital that students go to school every day – even in the early years of primary school.
IN VICTORIA SCHOOL IS COMPULSORY FOR CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEO-PLE AGED 6 -17 YEARS
Student Absences
The main reasons for absence are:
Sickness – There are always times when students need to miss school, such as when they’re ill. It’s vital that they’re only away on the days they are genuinely sick, and developing good sleep patterns, eating well and exercising regularly can make a big difference.
Family holidays - It's vital that holidays are planned during school holidays where possible, and not during the term. If you are planning to go on holiday during term time, make sure that you talk to your child’s school in advance, and work with them to develop an absence learning plan.
“Day off” – Think twice before letting your child have a “day off” as they could fall behind their classmates – every day counts.
Truancy – This is when students choose not to go to school without their parent’s permission. There can be many reasons for truancy. The best way to address this is for schools and parents to work together.

School refusal - School refusing children will experience significant emotional distress not only when going to school but also at the thought of going to school; they may be absent from school for weeks or even months at a time. School refusal differs from truancy as children generally stay home with the knowledge of the parents and despite their best efforts to encourage their child to go to school. See: My child or teenager has anxiety
BEING AWAY FROM SCHOOL FOR ONE DAY A FORTNIGHT EQUALS MISSING 1.5 YEARS OVER 13 YEARS OF SCHOOL
If your child is away
If for any reason your child must miss school, there are things you can do with your school to ensure they don’t fall behind:
Inform the school
Speak with your child’s classroom teacher and find out what work they need to do to keep up.
Develop an absence learning plan with your teacher and ensure your child completes the plan.
Remember, every day counts. If your child must miss school, speak with your classroom teacher as early as possible.
Openly communicating with your child's school about all absences is a good way to prevent attendance issues being escalated to a School Attendance Officer. A School Attendance Officer is a Department of Education and Training Regional Director who has authority to follow up attendance issues. Chronic or ongoing attendance issues that are escalated can lead to an Infringement Notice being issued to parent/s.
If you’re having attendance issues with your child, please let your classroom teacher know so we can work together to get your child to school every day.
Top attendance tips for parents
Schools want to work in partnership with parents – act early if you have any concerns by contacting your child’s school and asking for advice and support
Remember that every day counts
There is no safe number of days for missing school – each day a student misses puts them behind, and can affect their educational outcomes and their social connectedness
Talk positively about school and the importance of attending every day
Open and prompt communication with your child’s school about all absences is a good idea
Avoid making routine medical and dental appointments during the school day or planning family holidays during the term
Seek help from your school if you are concerned about your child’s attendance and wellbeing. Schools want to work in partnership with parents to support student attendance and wellbeing.

Provide written guidance on appropriate conduct and behaviour towards children.
Engage only the most suitable people to work with children and have high quality staff and volunteer supervision and professional development.
Ensure children know who to talk with if they are worried or are feeling unsafe, and that they are comfortable and encouraged to raise issues.
Report suspected abuse, neglect or mistreatment promptly to Leadership/Welfare Team and/or the appropriate authorities;
Share information appropriately and lawfully with other organisations where the safety and wellbeing of children is at risk and
Value the input of and communicate with families and carers.
IMPLEMENTATION:
Our Staff and volunteers must agree to abide by our Safety Code of Conduct which specifies the standards of conduct required when working with children.
Training and supervision:
Training and education is important to ensure that everyone at Epping Views Primary School understands that children’s safety is everyone’s responsibility. Our culture aims for all staff, students and wider members of our community to feel confident and comfortable in discussing any allegations of child abuse or child safety concerns. We train our staff to identify, assess, and minimise risks of child abuse and to detect potential signs of child abuse.
We support our staff through ongoing professional development to develop their skills to protect children from abuse and promote the cultural safety of Aboriginal children, the cultural safety of children from linguistically and/or diverse backgrounds, and the safety of children with a disability.
We ensure all staff and volunteers understand Epping View’s commitment to child safety and that everyone has a role to play in protecting children from abuse, as well as checking that their behaviour towards children is safe and appropriate.
*Please refer to our Child Safety Code of Conduct
Any inappropriate behaviour will be reported through appropriate channels, including the Department of Health and Human Services and Victoria Police, depending on the severity and urgency of the matter.
Recruitment:
We take all reasonable steps to employ skilled people to work with our children. We develop selection criteria and advertisements which clearly demonstrate our commitment to child safety and an awareness of our social and legislative responsibilities. Epping Views Primary School understands that when recruiting staff and volunteers we have ethical as well as legislative obligations.
We encourage applications from Aboriginal peoples, people from culturally and/or linguistically diverse backgrounds and people with a disability.
All people engaged by Epping Views Primary School, including volunteers and trades people, are required to hold a Working with Children Check and to provide evidence of this Check.
We carry out reference checks to ensure that we are recruiting the right people.
Fair procedures for personnel:
The safety and wellbeing of children is our primary concern. We are also fair and just to personnel. The decisions we make when recruiting, assessing incidents, and undertaking disciplinary action will always be thorough, transparent and based on evidence.

Privacy:
All personal information considered or recorded will respect the privacy of the individuals involved, whether they be staff, volunteers, parents or children, unless there is a risk to someone’s safety. We have safeguards and practices in place to ensure any personal information is protected. Everyone is entitled to know how this information is recorded, what will be done with it, and who will have access to it.
Legislative responsibilities:
Epping Views Primary School takes our legal responsibilities seriously, including:
• Failure to disclose: Reporting child sexual abuse is a community-wide responsibility. All adults in Victoria who have a reasonable belief that an adult has committed a sexual offence against a child under 16 have an obligation to report that information to the police.
• Failure to protect: People of authority at Epping Views Primary School will commit an offence if they know of a substantial risk of child sexual abuse and have the power or responsibility to reduce or remove the risk, but negligently fail to do so.
• Any personnel who are Mandatory Reporters must comply with their duties.
Risk management:
In Victoria, organisations are required to protect children when a risk is identified. In addition to general occupational health and safety risks, we proactively manage risks of abuse to our children. We have risk management strategies in place to identify, assess and take steps to minimise child abuse risks, which include risks posed by physical environments (for example, any doors that can lock) and online environments.
Allegations, concerns and complaints:
Epping Views Primary School takes all allegations seriously and has practices in place to investigate thoroughly and quickly. Our staff are trained to deal appropriately with allegations.
We work to ensure all children, families, staff and volunteers know what to do and who to tell if they observe abuse or are a victim, and if they notice inappropriate behaviour.
We all have a responsibility to report an allegation of abuse if we have a reasonable belief that an incident took place.
If an adult has a reasonable belief that an incident has occurred, then they must report the incident. Factors contributing to reasonable belief may be:
• a child states they or someone they know has been abused (noting that sometimes the child may in fact be referring to themselves)
• behaviour consistent with that of an abuse victim is observed
• someone else has raised a suspicion of abuse but is unwilling to report it
• observing suspicious behaviour.
EVALUATION:
This policy will be reviewed every four years and following significant incidents if they occur. We will ensure that families and children have the opportunity to contribute to the policy guidelines. Where possible we do our best to work with local Aboriginal communities, culturally and/or linguistically diverse communities and people with a disability in gaining guidance/ feedback and advice.
