like to pause for a moment and thank the WayneTrace faculty & staff and the families in ourcommunity for making student-learning the high-est priority in our district. We must all rememberthat what takes place during the regular schoolday is the most important part of the school expe-rience. We will continue to have high academicexpectations for all students, and family support iscritical for these expectations to be met.Speaking of family support, thank you to allfamily members who attended the recent parent/teacher conferences held at all three school build-ings. Remember, you may set up a conference
stated many times, educating a child is a jointendeavor between the school and home.In academic news, our Race to the Top transfor-mation team continues to emphasize our thirdgoal, the Ohio Teacher Evaluation System, which working diligently to provide training for ourteachers on student learning outcomes and
academic content standards. As stated before, themanner in which Ohio students are to be tested ischanging drastically in the 2014-2015 school year, and we continue to stay ahead of the curve byintroducing the new standards to both the teachersand students. The Ohio Department of Educationis raising the bar, and student success on state-mandated tests may see a sudden decline acrossthe state of Ohio. For example, in the state ofKentucky the state-wide passage rate on state-mandated tests went from 80% in 2010-2011(with the old system) to 36% in 2011-2012 (withthe new system). Ohio has adopted the same testthat Kentucky is currently using. Obviously, wewill work very hard to prevent such a drastic tests are clearly going to be more difficult, forcingall Ohio school districts to expect more from theirstudents in upcoming years. In other academic news, we extend much appreci-
ation to our local farming community for nomi-nating our JH/HS for the Monsanto Grant, a grantgiven to schools with rich farming traditions. This exclusive grant, totally $25,000 this schoolyear, has allowed us to further upgrade our tech-nology department by adding several more laptops for use by our students. We now live in aworld where a great deal of learning and daily-liferevolve around technology and the Internet, so theaddition of more computers is greatly appreciated
by staff and students alike at Wayne Trace JH/HS.Turning to school transportation, we areapproaching the time of year where our hazardousweather situations are likely to turn from fog tosnow and ice. When it comes to making decisionsabout whether to delay or cancel school, the goodnews is that snow and ice seem to be a little moreconsistent and predictable than what fog is.Although bad winter weather may set in after
buses are out, this is less-likely to happen than
with fog. With that said, please demand that yourstudent-drivers slow down and use caution duringthe winter season. Likewise, we will continue touse common sense when calling school delays andcancellations with the safety of our students ofutmost importance.Congratulations go out to Miss Sharon Spinner,Mrs. Joni Wenninger, Mrs. Judy Snook and theentire performing and visual arts departments forthe outstanding Fine Arts Festival held at the JH/HS on November 9. Countless hours of behind-the-scenes work goes into making such an event a also like to express our gratitude to everyone whoattended the festival and for their support of our
performing and visual arts departments. Thanks also go out to the staff members who each school building and to the Veterans in our
community who attended one of the assemblies. From everyone at Wayne Trace Local Schools, thank you for your service to our great nation. With the approaching Christmas season, WayneTrace student organizations will be sponsoringvarious food, clothing, and gift drives. If you areable, please consider helping those less fortunatethan you are. Helping others is the real gift oflife. As always, if you have questions or concerns Wayne Trace, feel free to contact your building
principal or superintendent.Go Raiders!

Staff members participating areMichelle Berry, Harry Florence, Rosanah Foster,
Jennifer Moran, Kerry Shelton, Heather Shepherd,Valerie DeVelvis and Michelle Hanneman. In December 2011, Ohio was awarded the Race tothe Top Early Learning Challenge Grant. Ohiomade a commitment to revise and expand thecurrent tiered Step Up to Quality (SUTQ) systemand broaden participation to all early childhoodsettings (including school districts, child care, andfamily care). This expanded system will rate andmonitor all state-funded early learning programs. Our preschool teachers, Susan Backus, SaraLinder, and Linda Utendorf will be participatingin training on the proposed standards, which will
be the basis of Ohio's monitoring and continuousimprovement system. The standards are for chil-dren from birth to age 5 years and includeacademic and developmental areas.
WT PAYNE ELEMENTARYJody L. Dunham, PrincipalWe are very proud of our students at Wayne TracePayne Elementary! The students are not onlylearning academic content by leaps and bounds,
but they are learning life skills. Our fifth andsixth grade students are becoming more involvedin supporting their school by serving other class-rooms and assisting with building upkeep.Students are taking pride in helping others. We wish to thank the families who attended ourParent-Teacher conferences. Teachers met withthe families of 76.4% of our students. Confer-ences are not limited to October. We want fami-lies to know that our staff is willing to meet withthem year round.Wayne Trace Payne Elementary has adopted anew strategy for lockdown procedures known asthe A.L.I.C.E. plan. A.L.I.C.E. is an acronym forALERT, LOCKDOWN, INFORM, COUNTER,
and EVACUATE. Letters were sent home tofamilies on November 7 explaining this drill. The with this drill on November 12. At that drill, we
practiced the ALERT, LOCKDOWN andINFORM components. The COUNTER andEVACUATE portions will be practiced in thefuture.A special thank you is extended to the Payne FireDepartment for presenting a fire safety programand for providing our students with a back pack.Students were reminded to visit with their familiesabout the importance of having a fire safety planat home.We wish to thank the community for supportingour Market Day Pie Fundraiser. A profit of morethan $1,200 was raised to fund our field trips andassemblies. Joey Branham and Mya Endicottwere the top boy and girl salesmen. Their reward

Thisyear there will not be a Thursday night perfor-mance, but instead we will create more seating atthe 1:30 performance. Parking is always an issue
and I ask you to keep in mind that Perry Street is aone way street with houses on the north side. Please be respectful of these families and not parkon the north side of Perry Street.Bullying seems to be a topic we read or hearabout almost daily, whether in professional sportsor schools. To help our students understand moreabout preventing bullying, we will have two
presentations on December 12; The first at 1:00for K-3 students followed by a 2:00 presentationfor grades 4-6. Our staff is working hard to pre-vent bullying, but this issue is something that weneed your assistance with. When your childcomes home from school on December 12 takesome time to sit down and discuss what theylearned at the presentation. Thank you for yourassistance in helping to preventing bullying. The PTO will be holding their annual basket raffleand bake sale during the Christmas program. Thisyear there will be four baskets to choose from: anOhio State Basket; a Christmas Wreath; a Movie Tickets may be purchased in the office beginningMonday, December 2. Parents this will be your last chance to order on this great opportunity to purchase your 2013-2014 yearbook. The staff and I would like to thank all of the par-ents who were able to attend Parent/TeacherConferences. Today in education it is so im-
portant for the teachers and parents to keep thelines of communication open and Parent/TeacherConferences were a great way to do just that.
