THE HOPE OF GLORY! WEEK THREE: “GET YOUR HOPES UP!” We continue The Hope of Glory with a message about finding hope in the most unlikely of circumstances. Like Abraham, we can face the facts of life and still access the hope of glory every day. THE STORY BEHIND THE GLORY - In Romans 4, the Apostle Paul refers to Abraham, who never wavered in his

faith, despite having no real reason to believe he would see God’s promises fulfilled in his life. The book of Genesis records the story between God’s promise to Abraham and the hero of the faith we remember him as today. Along the way, remaining faithful was not as easy as it may have sounded. This reminds us, “Everyone has a story behind their glory.” Often times, the promises of God don’t seem to make sense in light of what we see. When that happens, it can be difficult to keep our hopes up. YOUR FAITH NEEDS A FIGHT- For your faith to be strengthened, it has to have something to push against. Nothing gets stronger without resistance—not a marriage, not a church, and not a dream… Faith needs a fight in order to grow. When God promised Abraham that he would make him the “father of many nations,” it didn’t make sense to him. Abraham was 100 years old, without a son, and his wife was too old to conceive. Against all hope, however, Abraham still found a way to believe in hope and thus strengthened his faith. In the same way, our faith grows whenever we can push against all odds and find a hope to cling to within us. THE FACTS, THE FAILURES, AND THE FEELINGS - Still, it can be incredibly difficult to find our faith in the midst of seemingly impossible or hopeless situations. Throughout his life, Abraham was forced to work through numerous limitations, mistakes, and circumstances that worked against the promise God made to him. Today, we live as recipients of many promises of God. However, many of our struggles can seem to weigh down our hopes and keep us living in discouragement. Sometimes, the facts of our present circumstances stand in clear contradiction of our hope. Other times, reminders of our past failures can come back to haunt us and cause us to lose hope. In all of this, our feelings, perhaps the biggest challenger to our faith, will drive us further from finding the hope of glory within us. THE WEIGHT OF GLORY - In Romans 4:20-21, Paul wrote that Abraham was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, believing that He was fully capable of performing all that He had promised. In Hebrew, the word “glory” means “weight.” Therefore, to say that Abraham gave glory to God would literally mean that he gave weight to His promises—more weight than he gave to his facts, failures, or feelings.

world gets. We have had 50 boxes already prepared and ready to go. Please see the Mission Table for labels. If you can not fill a box but would like to help, the shipping to send each box is $7.00. Please mark your offering and we will be sure it is

used for Operation Christmas Child.

We Become His Son

There is a story that comes out of the Bedouin culture. “Bedouin” is the Aramaic name for “desert dwellers.” These people live much as the characters of the Old Testament did. During a heated argument, according to this story, a young Bedouin struck and killed a friend of his. Knowing the ancient, inflexible customs of his people, the young man fled, running across the desert under the cover of darkness, seeking safety. He went to the black tent of the tribal chief in order to seek his protection. The old chief took the young Arab in. The chief assured him that he would be safe until the matter could be settled legally. The next day, the young man’s pursuers arrived, demanding the murderer be turned over to them. They would see that justice would prevail in their own way. “But I have given my word,” protested the chief. “But you don’t know whom he killed!” they countered. “I have given my word,” the chief repeated. “He killed your son!” one of them blurted out. The chief was deeply and visibly shaken with his news. He stood speechless with his head bowed for a long time. The accused and the accusers as well as curious onlookers waited breathlessly. What would happen to the young man? Finally the old man raised his head. “Then he shall become my son,” he informed them, “and everything I have will one day be his.” The young man certainly didn’t deserve such generosity. And that, of course, is the point. Love in its purest form is beyond comprehension. No one can merit it. It is freely given. It is agape, the love of God. Look to the cross. At the cross we encounter love in its purest form.

There my burdened soul found liberty, At Calvary!”

A Glass of Milk One day, a poor boy who was selling goods from door to door to pay his way through school, found he had only one thin dime left, and he was hungry. He decided he would ask for a meal at the next house. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door. Instead of a meal he asked for a drink of water. She thought he looked hungry so brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it slowly, and then asked, "How much do I owe you?"

"You don't owe me anything," she replied. "Mother has taught us never to accept pay for a kindness." He said, "Then I thank you from my heart." As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but his faith in God and man was strong also. He had been ready to give up and quit. Years later that young woman became critically ill. The local doctors were baffled. They finally sent her to the big city, where they called in specialists to study her rare disease. Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately he rose and went down the hall of the hospital to her room. Dressed in his doctor's gown he went in to see her. He recognized her at once. He went back to the consultation room determined to do his best to save her life. From that day he gave special attention to the case. After a long struggle, the battle was won. Dr. Kelly requested the business office to pass the final bill to him for approval. He looked at it, then wrote something on the edge and the bill was sent to her room. She feared to open it, for she was sure it would take the rest of her life to pay for it all. Finally she looked, and something caught her attention on the side of the bill. She read these words... "Paid in full with one glass of milk" (Signed) Dr. Howard Kelly Tears of joy flooded her eyes as her happy heart prayed: "Thank You, God, that Your love has spread abroad through human hearts and hands."

God Makes It Grow

Paul wrote his first letter to the Corinthian church to correct several problems. The Corinthian's needed instruction in marriage, Christian freedom, worship, and various issues which tended to cause division. He rebuked the church for quarreling about whom they followed: "You are still worldly... For when one says, 'I follow Paul,' and another, 'I follow Apollos,' are you not mere men?"(1 Corinthians 3:3,4). Apollos was a good teacher, but Paul reminds us that all minis-ters of the Gospel – all preachers, teachers, parents, and anyone else who desires to share Biblical truths – are simply servants through whom God accomplishes His work. We become worldly and fail to live according to the Spirit of God any time we become followers of a specific minister or feel personally responsible for someone's growth and maturity. 1 Corinthians 3:5-6 says, "What, after all, is Apollos? And what is Paul? Only servants, through whom you came to believe – as the Lord has assigned to each his task. I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow." We must always remain exclusive followers of Jesus Christ! Though He may use many others to assist in the process, God must receive ALL the credit and glory for our growth. In the same manner, God uses each of us to ASSIST in the growth of others. We can teach truth with our words and demonstrate truth with our lives, but we can never cause someone to accept the truth or even grow to a deeper understanding. Our instructions are to plant the seed of His Word and water with discipleship, prayer, and encouragement at every opportunity; "We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making His appeal through us" (2 Corinthians 5:20). As we plant and water, it's normal to want to see some growth. We may desire to see blossoms overnight, but God is growing a mighty shade tree with deep roots and wide branches that will not break in the wind – and this kind of growth takes time. We may NEVER see the eternal results of our effort, but we must patiently continue to plant and water, and trust God to accomplish His work; "My Word will not return to Me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I have sent it" (Isaiah 55:11). Each of us knows someone who needs to know our Heavenly Father in a more personal way. There are great ministry opportunities placed in our path every day. Let's obediently follow by being well nourished and casting forth the seed and water of His Word without becoming discouraged. Let's remember we are the servants through whom He works, but let's ALWAYS remember that God makes it grow!

Choosing Your Identity In Christ Sometimes you find somebody else has conveyed a thought or idea you have been thinking about better than you can. I read the following devotional from Rick Warren that spoke to very directly to me. And thought I’d pass the same along to you! “Anyone who is joined to Christ is a new being; the old is gone, the new has

come.” 2 Corinthians 5:17

Ultimately, your identity is based on your choices. Here are five winning choices you can make that will help determine your destiny: 1 - I can choose to get healthier. Instead of bemoaning the fact that you don’t have an Olympic body, find ways to increase your energy, lower your stress, get more sleep, and have more power. Psalm 119:73 says, “You made me; you created me. Now give me the sense to follow your com-mands” (LB). Improving the controllable factors in your life helps you reduce the impact of the un-controllable factors. 2 - I can choose to deepen relationships. The fear of rejection prevents connection, and the only way to get rid of fear is to do the thing you fear the most. Learn communication skills, replace bad relationships, reach out and risk connecting with someone. “Let love be your highest goal!” (1 Corinthians 14:1) 3 - I can choose to trust God no matter what happens. “I will always thank the Lord; I will never stop praising him” (Psalm 34:1). When you get to the point in your life where you can say, “I praise the Lord no matter what happens,” that is a confidence that you won’t find anywhere in Hollywood, on Capitol Hill, or on Wall Street. That is a confidence built on a relationship with God! 4 - I can choose what I think about. Throughout the 20th century, scientists believed the adult brain could not be changed. When the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize winner finally proved that you can rewire your brain, science finally caught up to the Bible: “Let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think” (Romans 12:2). Your self is created by your memories, and your memories are created by your mental habits. Feed your brain with truth — God’s Word.

5 - I can choose Jesus as my Savior. I’m not just talking about Jesus saving you from your sins. I’m talking about letting Jesus be your savior every day. Letting Jesus save you gives you the power to follow through on the choices you make. “Anyone who is joined to Christ is a new being; the old is gone, the new has come” (2 Corinthians 5:17 LB). You get to choose how much God blesses your life; He is just waiting on you to use your wild card.

Stop Complaining and Start Gaining

"'Do everything without complaining...'" Phil. 2:14 Isn't complaining really just about words? No, it's much more than that!

First, complaining hands your power over to the people and circumstances you complain about, making you feel like their

victim. It diminishes your ability to think of solutions, conditions your mind negatively and blunts your ability to receive creative ideas from God. Positive outcomes don't grow in negative soil! You can't complain and create simultaneously. "Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring...can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs?..." (James 3:11-12)

Complaints are verbal expressions of negative beliefs. They cancel positive intentions and confessions, rendering you powerless to reap the gains God offers. Complaining focuses on a past you can't change. It keeps you scavenging in yesterday's debris, searching for evidence about "who did what" and "when" and "why," while your present slips fruitlessly away.

Second, complaining is toxic to your relationships. "...Do you not know...a little leaven leavens the whole lump?‘ (1 Corinthians 5:6) Complaining invites others to complain. Injected poison toxifies every part of the body. Subtly, your relationship, your family, your workplace, your church and your environment become polluted. Complaining polarizes relationships. People who don't like stress, anxiety and negativity begin to distance themselves from you.

"The tongue has the power of life and death..." (Proverbs 18:21) – your life and death, and the life and death of others. So pray, "Set a guard over my mouth, O Lord...‘ (Psalm 141:3); help me to avoid complaining. The Last Impression

A middle-aged man was waiting for the bus. While he waited, he watched a young boy eat five candy bars, one right after the other. He said to the boy, "Eating all that candy is bad for your health and can rot your teeth."

The boy replied, "Mister, my grandfather lived to be 97 years old!"

The man said, "I'll bet he didn't eat five candy bars in a row."

The boy answered, "No, but he sure knew how to mind his own business!"
