Weekly Home Learning – Year 3
Summer term – w/b 22/6/20 and w/b 29/6/20
Hi Year 3!
Please find attached your home learning for the next two weeks.
Home learning tasks
Read – 30 minutes daily
Read to and with your child. This could be at any time during the day – it could even be when dinner is cooking or even
when in the bath!
I have previously linked to ebooks on Oxford Owl and Purple Mash so if you need to use those, please continue to use
them. There are some good comprehensions available for some books which I set last week – I know it’s difficult not
being able to refer back to the text as easily as we could in Guided Reading, but it’s a good way to keep on top of
comprehension.
Keep an eye out for the stories I read on Purple Mash on the Year 3 blog!
Spelling – 15 minutes daily
Please continue with the spelling activities as set out at the end of this document.
Please also find attached this week’s spellings. PAT spellings for this week are in a separate file on the website.
Writing activities
Write a letter to Mrs Strachan – handwritten is definitely best! Why not tell her about all of the things that you have been
up to during lockdown? Are there any new skills you have learned or have you discovered a new interest? I’ve been hearing
that some of you have been enjoying going for a run or learning all about Ancient Egypt! She would love to hear about it. You
can either put them in the post to the school or you could write a letter on Purple Mash – this will be set as a 2Do, although
it won’t be handwritten. It’s up to you!
Watch this video of a book about feelings being read:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6r5GuAAhTw
Discuss associations for different feelings: does a particular feeling make you think of a particular time? Or a place? Do you think of certain
colours when you think of certain emotions? Which colours match which emotions? Why?
Then, why not write a poem or two? You could try an acrostic poem associated with a feeling mentioned in the book (or one
of your own!) such as my example below with JOYFUL:
Jumping with excitement
Over the moon
Yellow is the colour I associate with being happy
Fun in the sun
Under the weather is not how I feel
Laughing out loud
Or, if you are finding this tricky, why not create some free verse using a repeated sentence starter such as ‘I feel happy
when…’
For example:
I feel happy when I am at parkrun.
I feel happy when I am eating pizza.
I feel happy when I am at Whipsnade Zoo.
I feel happy when I am running around the countryside and in the forest.
You can make it as long or as short as you like, and it’s up to you if you choose to rhyme or not!
Handwriting
Maths - 45 minutes daily
-See Purple Mash 2Dos
-Complete a Maths Frenzy (see the school website for the pack of blank maths frenzy sheets) once a week
-Play on TT Rock Stars (https://ttrockstars.com/ ) and progress through the levels. I will be setting the children a challenge each
week. This can be found in the Rock Slam section under multiplayer. Try and beat my score!
I have previously linked to other websites – if there are activities you enjoy on there please feel free to continue with
those. There are also some excellent links to websites on our school website.
-Complete your times tables test for the week on Purple Mash. Check out the Year 3 blog post for more information on this
if you haven’t already.
1. Complete the separate activities uploaded onto the school website.
2. Roman numerals – can you crack the codes? First, have a think about the questions on the chart below matching Roman
numerals to our number system:
Then have a go at the code breaking activities uploaded separately to the school website. For further guidance on
how to complete this, take a look at the introductory video I’ve filmed which will be posted onto the Year 3 blog on
Purple Mash.
Science
Grow a plant! Cress works well as it requires very little resources – you can even grow it on damp tissue or cotton wool, and it
doesn’t take very long to grow. Keep a diary and write down what you see each day. How does it compare to yesterday? The
day before that? Or even, the day before that? I have set the diary as a 2Do on Purple Mash if you would like to keep it on
there.
French
Revise the animals in the pictures below. For pronunciation guides, please watch my video on Purple Mash on the Year 3 blog.
Why not create your own posters or flashcards to help you remember them?
Spelling lists – these have also been set on Purple Mash as the weekly spelling test. Make sure you learn these as much as
possible before taking the test.
