What an exceptional week! So many highlights it’s hard to pin it down to just one. This week, first grade is still working on geometry while second grade finished their chapter on metric measurement and took a test. For reading, first graders have had a few lessons on phonics that connected to their spelling. Second graders continued reading The Great Ball Game and are looking forward to the prospect of performing a little readers theater for their classmates at the end of the week. One highlight was most definitely the SEAL gallery walk on Thursday. Thank you, parents, for taking time out of your busy work schedules to visit the classroom and see what the kids have been learning. It meant a great deal to the children to see your support. We spent one afternoon planting out wheat baskets. We had an interesting discovery that has a direct tie-in to our upcoming life science unit. We discovered that our plants were sort of yellowish while the ones from Mr. Cubero’s class were bright green. That’s because ours had been in hibernation for one day longer (without sunlight), but by the end of the day, ours had turned green, too. We’re a little more than halfway through Because of Winn-Dixie . It’s becoming bittersweet each time we read a chapter. The kids love hearing this story read aloud and eagerly ask for some “Winn-Dixie” time. But at the same time, they don’t want the story to come to an end. Isn’t that the way with all good books? For Fun Friday, second graders began working on special crowns/hats for their readers’ theater of The Great Ball Game . First grade got to let the artist inside come out while doing some easel painting. Those who didn’t get a chance to paint, will have the opportunity in the coming week. The painting are amazing! !--!--!--!--!--!--!--!--!--!--!--!--!--!--! MonDAYS: Students, please remember to your return library book and red book bag on time! !--!--!--!--!--!--!--!--!--!--!--!--!--!--! April 11 Let’s Look at Art presentation We will have an art docent for the San Jose Museum of Art give a presentation. It is three-fold: 1. An introduction to the art museum. 2. A brief overview of some of the basic elements of art. 3. Use Visual Thinking Strategies to discuss some of the art pieces in her portfolio. Students will also receive free passes to the art museum with the hope that you can visit during spring break. If a trip to the art museum doesn’t fit into your schedule during the vacation, please still hang onto your free passes. I will offer a meet-up time later this spring. 13 1st Grade Performance – 7 p.m. First grade families are invited to see the evening performance. Students should arrive at 6:30 p.m. to allow time for changing into their costumes. 14 Egg Painting Thank you to Elsa Morales Duran and Ericka Hum for your offer of help supervising this fun activity. Also, I’m reassigning my Friday morning regulars, Linda Ganawan and Mei-Fong Tseng, to supervise students with this activity during the morning. If anyone else is interested and available in either the morning or the afternoon, please let me know. Thank you! 14 2nd Grade Readers’ Theater Not to be outdone by the first graders, the second graders also wanted to do a performance. It will be on a much smaller scale…readers’ theater of The Great Ball Game in the classroom. Second grade parents, we’d love for you to see this very modest mini-performance. We’ll do it first thing in the morning, so those of you who need to get to work might be able to stick around for a brief time. We will start right after attendance/lunchcount, at 8:30. and should be finished by 8:40 or 8:45 at the latest. Please RSVP by either emailing me or having your child let me know if you will be able to attend. Thank you. What an exceptional week! So many highlights

it’s hard to pin it down to just one. This week, first grade is still working on geometry

while second grade finished their chapter on metric measurement and took a test.

We’re a little more than halfway through Because of Winn-Dixie. It’s becoming bittersweet each time we read a chapter. The kids love hearing this story read aloud and eagerly ask for some “Winn-Dixie” time. But at the same time, they don’t want the story to come to an end. Isn’t that the way with all good books?

April 11 Let’s Look at Art presentation

We will have an art docent for the San Jose Museum of Art give a presentation. It is three-fold: 1. An introduction to the art museum. 2. A brief overview of some of the basic elements of

art. 3. Use Visual Thinking Strategies to discuss some

of the art pieces in her portfolio. Students will also receive free passes to the art

museum with the hope that you can visit during spring break. If a trip to the art museum doesn’t fit into your schedule during the vacation, please still hang onto your free passes. I will offer a meet-up time later this spring.

13 1st Grade Performance – 7 p.m. First grade families are invited to see the evening

performance. Students should arrive at 6:30 p.m. to allow time for changing into their costumes.

14 Egg Painting Thank you to Elsa Morales Duran and Ericka

Hum for your offer of help supervising this fun activity. Also, I’m reassigning my Friday morning regulars, Linda Ganawan and Mei-Fong Tseng, to supervise students with this activity during the morning. If anyone else is interested and available in either the morning or the afternoon, please let me know. Thank you!

14 Friday is a minimum day! 1:00 dismissal – Please arrange for your child to be

picked up on time.

17 - 21 Spring Break School resumes on Monday, April 24th.

21 Family Film Outing: Born in China Your entire family is invited to see the new Disney

Nature movie, Born in China.

The exact time is still TBD. I should have

information regarding show times this week. Once I have that info, I will send out an email to those who are “IN” so we can reach a consensus on the best time for most families.

This is a “FAMILY EVENT” so the entire family is

invited. Remember, each family will buy their own tickets and everyone will meet inside the movie theater. I will plan to arrive about 30 minutes early. IMPORTANT: All children must be accompanied by an adult family member.

26 Oakland Zoo Field Trip The parents of the following students have signed

up to be field trip chaperones: Adonis, Andy, Avrylle, Francisco, Greyson, Jeremiah, Katelyn, Nolan, and Sarah. This week, I will be double-checking that volunteer forms and current TB tests have been submitted to the school office. If you haven’t taken care of that yet, there’s still time.

Due to limited seating capacity on the bus, most of you will need to carpool. If you have a vehicle that can seat five (driver, plus 4 passengers), please offer to be a driver. NOTE: There is a parking fee of $10 per car.

No Red Book Bags This Week We will not be sending home the red book bags

this week. Enjoy the extra time during vacation.

New JiJi Goal The new goal for JiJi is 84% by 8 P.M. on Sunday,

April 23rd. However, since we have a week off for spring vacation, students should make an effort to get

ahead and/or strive towards reaching 100% if they’re not already there yet.

Eggs Wanted If you’d like to put together a

class set of 24 plastic eggs filled with small goodies (stickers, erasers, small toys from Dollar Tree, etc. NO candy) for the children to add to their spring baskets, please send them by Thursday. Many thanks.

Scrapbooking Help Needed at Home Once again, it seems I have procrastinated far too

long on getting started on the students’ scrapbooks. I’ve barely scratched the surface in terms of uploading and processing photos, but realize with a pending deadline to complete our class pages for the Summerdale yearbook, I need to get cracking uploading the many, many remaining photos taken during the course of the school year!

If you have the time, I’d be grateful for help in mounting individual photos onto scrapbook pages. I can send home photos, photo mounts, and scrap book pages in the coming weeks. This will be an ongoing task until the end of the school year, so let me know if you’d be willing to help out. Many thanks!

1st Grade Language Arts & Math We are continuing with the 9.1 story this week, so

there will not be any new spelling or a new weekly reader this week. On Friday, students will take the 9.1 skills test only. Thanks for your support and understanding. However, there will be a math test on chapter 10 (geometry) on Wednesday.

Thank you! Thank you to Ericka Hum, Marcia McCown, and

Mei-Fong Tseng for helping at school this week.

100%ers JiJi 100%: Francisco is the very first student to have

JiJi make it all the way to the top of the mountain by completing not only the assigned objectives, but all the optional ones as well. Congratulations, Francisco! Well done!

Spelling test: Cassie, Francisco, Jeremiah, Oscar, and Tristan.

Second grade’s Great Ball Game story test: Adonis, Alyssa, Francisco, Greyson, and Sophia.

Second grade’s Great Ball Game skills test: Arianna and Katelyn.

Second grade’s chapter 9 math test on metric measurement: Alyssa, Arianna and Francisco.

Congratulations!
