weekly current event assignment and summit

1
Weekly Current Event Assignment and Summit Students often ask why they need to learn history. Some might even say, “Why is this important to me? These guys are dead!” But history has a way of repeating itself, so it is important to look at current events and relate them back to other events in history. Your weekly current event assignment is a way for you to learn, engage with, and discuss informative and relevant events and important topics that are happening now! There are many ways to do current events, and we will try several methods out during the course of this year. Here at the beginning of the year we will all be reading the SAME current event each week and posting your reaction to the article on GOOGLE CLASSROOM. This will culminate in a class discussion (which I call a summit) each Friday. Directions 1. Create a login for newsela.com username: password: 2. Each Monday a new article will be available for you to read on Google Classroom. Read the article. 3. Once you have read the article, write a paragraph response to the posted question on Google Classroom. This needs to be done by the time you come to class each Friday. 4. Come to class each Friday ready to listen and participate in a class wide discussion on the article. I always look forward to seeing your brilliant mind in action! __________________________________________________________________________ Grading – you will receive a score for your current event response writing on Google Classroom WHST.6-8.9 Draw evidence from informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research. 4 3 2 1 I can effectively find and use strong evidence from informational text on my own to analyze and reflect on my personal reaction.
