    Week:jan3to9jan,2013The Union government warned foreigners on tourist visas to desist from carrying on journalistic activities in the country

    or face deportation, a norm followed by many countries. The government took the decision after reports emerged of

    foreign researchers, scholars and activists misusing tourist visas to report on critical issues for various international

    magazines and journals.

    Visa to Miandad triggers controversy

    Issuing of visa to the former Pakistan cricketer and senior Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) official, Javed Miandad, to visi

    India for the one-day match series was mired in controversy over the links of the batsmans family to Indias most-wanted

    terrorist Dawood Ibrahim. The former Pakistan captains son, Junaid, is married to Dawoods daughter Mahrukh. The

    Union government on Thursday defended the decision to give visa to Miandad, as his name did not figure in the negative

    list. But playing safe, he cancelled his visit.

    CBSE to introduce gender studies

    The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will introduce a new subject, Human Rights and Gender Studies, in

    the curriculum from the coming academic year. It will be an elective subject for Class XI and XII students and will focuson human rights and women-specific issues. Similarly, a handbook for teachers on Women Safety and Empowerment

    through Curriculum will also be introduced in the teachers training courses by the National Council for Teachers

    Education to inculcate moral values among teachers which can then be imbibed by the students.

    The National Curriculum Framework (NCF), 2005 is based on the guiding principles of the Constitution and speaks of

    education inculcating value attitude and skills required for living in harmony with oneself and others. One of the focus

    groups on which the NCF, 2005 is based is gender issue in education.

    Violin maestro MSG passes away

    M.S. Gopalakrishnan legendary violinist known for his mastery of both the Carnatic and Hindustani systems ofclassical music passed away early on Thursday after a brief illness. He was 82.

    New Uttarakhand Vidhan Sabha building in Raipur

    The new Uttarakhand Vidhan Sabha building is being constructed in the Raipur area near Dehra Dun. The Vidhan Sabha

    buildings in Dehra Dun and Bharadisen in Gairsen will both be constructed within two years.

    7-year-old stay order on cigarette ad rules stayed

    The Supreme Court on Thursday issued notice and stayed a 2005 Bombay High Court interim order staying

    implementation of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and

    Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Rules 2004.

    Italian marines return, report before court

    The Italian marines Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone, accused of shooting two fishermen dead off the Kerala

    coast, returned here on Friday after celebrating Christmas back home with their families. The Kerala High Court had

    Last ditch effort to scuttle Viswaroopam on DTH

    The decision of the Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners Association and the Tamil Nadu Film Distributors Association to not

    screen and distribute movies that are released on the Direct-to-Home platform, taken at a meeting held in Tiruchi, was an

    effort to scuttle the novel move by Kamal Haasan to release Viswaroopamon DTH platform as a pay-per-view screening

    on January 10, a day ahead of its intended theatre release. Theatre owners and distributors were not convinced that DTH is

    video piracy-proof and believed the showing will drastically cut ticket revenues. Mr. Haasan has been insistent that theatre

    owners have nothing to fear. But the movie will now hit the theatres first and its release date has been postponed.

    Another IT firm vanishes with staffs money

    The Company, Omega Group, hired graduate engineers after extracting Rs.50,000 to Rs.1 lakh from them as a deposit

    The CEO is on the run along with several senior executives. The company, based in Belandur near Ecospace on the

    Banglore citys outskirts, offered job placements for fresh engineering graduates after training them. It even offered

    stipends to the employees during the training period, giving them appointment letters and ensuring placement in IT majors

    International bills, not U.S. treasury bonds: I-T officials

    Documents seized from T.M. Ramalingam of Tirupur district in Tamil Nadu on December 31 were international bills ofexchange with a face value of $5 billion and not U.S. treasury bonds. The businessman claimed to have purchased these

    bills of exchange by exchanging gold bonds he already had with him (worth $5 billion) with a person based in Brazil.

    Two Pinaka variants under development

    After the success of the Pinaka multiple rocket launcher, ordnance factories in Andhra Pradesh are now developing two

    more of its variants. At present, there are two variants of the Pinaka and efforts are on to develop two more variants that

    can strike targets at double the existing range.

    Pamban bridge to be renovated

    The 21-year-old Annai Indira Gandhi Bridge (Pamban bridge), connecting the island of Rameswaram to the mainland,

    Veteran Bengali actor passes away

    Noted Bengali actor Haradhan Bandopadhyay, who worked in several films over the past six decades including many

    directed by Satyajit Ray, passed away in a hospital in Kolkata after a brief illness. He was 87. Bandopadhyay was

    honoured with Banga Vibhushan by the West Bengal Government in 2011 for his contribution to cinema.

    Drummers hoping to enter Guinness World Records

    Assam earned an entry in the India Book of Records on Sunday for holding the largest ensemble of drummers with 14,833

    drummers playing khol (a traditional drum of Assam) in unison in Titabor in Jorhat district. The organiser of the ensemble

    Srimanta Sankaradeva Sangha will now be sending the video recording of the event to the authorities of Guinness World

    Records with the hope to earn an entry.

    Steep hike in IIT tuition fee

    The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have decided to increase the annual fee for undergraduate courses by 80 per

    cent from the existing Rs 50,000 to Rs 90,000 from the new academic session. However, no tuition and hostel fee

    will be charged from the students belonging to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes categories. Further, IITs will

    continue with the practice of giving 100 per cent scholarships to students whose parents annual income is less than Rs

    4.5 lakh.

    D.K. Jain is Law Commission chief

    Justice D.K. Jain has been appointed Chairman of the Law Commission of India, which gives advice to the governmenton complex legal issues. Justice Jain, 64, will take over on January 24, after retiring from the Supreme Court the same

    day. The Union Cabinet recently approved the constitution of the 20th Law Commission with a three-year term till Augus

    31, 2015. Besides the Chairman, the commission will have four full-time members.

    Kargil gets first civil air connectivity

    Chief Minister Omar Abdullah launched the first ever civil aviation service between Kargil and Jammu. The landing of

    Mantra Airlines 17-seater at Kargil created history. The Indian Air Force has been operating an AN-32 aircraft three

    times a week in the Jammu-Kargil sector and once a week between Srinagar and Kargil. It carries 40 to 45 passengers

    However, the service has been highly erratic, with passengers often complaining of cancellation of flights on flimsy

    grounds. Yet it is a cheaper service; the rate per passenger between Jammu and Kargil stands fixed at Rs. 1,450 and at Rs1,100 between Srinagar and Kargil. Mantra Airlines, according to informed sources, has fixed a stupendous Rs. 10,000

    per passenger in the Jammu-Kargil sector.

    Philanthropist Madanjeet Singh dead

    Former diplomat, artist, writer, and philanthropist, Madanjeet Singh, 88, a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador since 2000,

    passed away in Beaulieu-sur-Mer in the south of France on Sunday following a stroke. He was passionate in his

    commitment to South Asian regional cooperation and solidarity on a secular, democratic, and progressive basis. This

    commitment was backed by an extraordinary personal financial contribution to the South Asia Foundation (SAF), which

    he founded in 2000, worked for tirelessly, and mentored until the day he died. This organisation, which is focussed onproviding educational opportunities for young women and men, has active chapters across the region.

    Myanmars army has used air strikes against northern ethnic rebels. Fighting between the military, known as the

    Hamas allows Fatah rally in Gaza

    Hundreds of thousands of supporters of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbass Fatah party on Friday held their first

    mass rally in Gaza since Hamas seized control of the territory in 2007. Hamas, in a sign of reconciliation with Fatah,

    permitted the rally to go ahead as the climax of a week of Gaza festivities celebrating the 48th anniversary of Fatah taking

    up arms against Israel.

    Worlds longest subway system boosts Chinas public transport push

    China came out with a new policy to boost usage of public transport, days after the capital, Beijing, put into operation four

    subway lines with a combined length of 70 km whose addition makes the sprawling 16-line Beijing subway system

    the worlds longest. The new policy move makes it mandatory for downtown areas of major cities to have bus stops every

    500 metres. It also states that the use of public transport should account for 60 per cent of motor vehicle use. The policy

    includes incentives for operators, exempting all public transport vehicles from consumption tax, fuel and diesel subsidies

    and favorable electricity usage rates.

    Daring daily in strike against Chinese censorship

    The Guangdong-based TheSouthern Weekend(Nanfang Zhoumo), a newspaper that has a reputation for hard-hitting and

    independent journalism has emerged in recent days as the centre of a storm of criticism aimed at propaganda authorities.

    The newspaper maintains a tradition of issuing strong editorial greetings every New Year. This years letter, which

    called for political reforms and moves to create a Constitutional government, was reportedly replaced by the provincial

    Googles Schmidt on a private visit to N. Korea

    Googles chairman Eric Schmidt the highest-profile U.S. executive to visit North Korea wants a first-hand look at

    North Koreas economy and social media during his private visit in Pyongyang. His visit has drawn criticism from the

    U.S. State Department as it comes only weeks after a controversial North Korean rocket launch.

    Opposition writes to Speaker on impeachment

    Sri Lankan Opposition leaders have requested Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa to call for an all-party meeting. A

    Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC), which probed a series of charges against Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake

    held her guilty on three counts, on December 8. The charges included financial irregularities; conflict of interest; and

    failure to declare her assets. On January 7, the Court of Appeal quashed the PSC report. This followed the January 3

    Supreme Court determination that the PSC had no legal authority to inquire into allegations against a judge. Parliamentignored this decision and set January 10 and 11 as dates for a discussion on an impeachment motion against Ms.

    Bandaranayake.

    Barack Obama signs fiscal cliff bill . with autopen

    U.S. President Barack Obama, on Wednesday, signed into law the fiscal cliff bill with an autopen, which is a signing

    machine is a device used for automatic signature. Called the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012, the bill makes

    permanent the temporary rates on taxable income at or below $400,000 for individual filers and $450,000 for married

    individuals filing jointly. It also permanently indexes the Alternative Minimum Tax exemption amount to the Consumer

    Price Index and extends emergency unemployment compensation benefits and Federal funding for unemployed workers

    for one year. Among other things, it continues current law Medicare payment rates for physicians services furnished

    through December 31, 2013, and provides a postponement of the Budget Control Acts sequester for two months. Harry

    Truman is believed to have been the first U.S. President to use the autopen as a way of responding to mail and signing

    checks.

    Ex-directors of Satyam win ruling in U.S. class-action suit

    A U.S. federal judge dismissed claims against seven former directors of Satyam Computer Services in shareholder

    lawsuits stemming from the massive fraud, which came to be known as India's Enron. The lawsuits centre on the

    revelation by Satyams founder and former Chairman Ramalinga Raju that what had been Indias fourth-largest

    outsourcing firm had for several years inflated its revenue, income and cash balances by more than $1 billion. In 2011

    Satyam, now called Mahindra Satyam Ltd, and its auditor, PricewaterhouseCoopers, agreed to pay $125 million and $25.5

    million, respectively, to settle claims filed by shareholders. That same year, Satyam and PwC agreed to pay a combined

    $17.5 million to settle claims made by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and Public Company Accounting

    Oversight Board. The 2011 settlements did not include Satyam's former directors, who continued to litigate the case that

    ultimately ended in Wednesday's ruling.

    Bharti Infratel in FTSE Global Equity indices

    Bharti Infratel, a leading provider of passive telecom infrastructure in India, on Thursday said that it would be included in

    the FTSE Global Equity Indices starting January 7. Bharti Infratel will be added to FTSE All-World Index (large cap)

    with an investability weighting of 9 per cent and will also be added to FTSE All-Emerging Index.

    FTSE: FTSEs flagship global benchmark, the FTSE All-World, is used by investors worldwide to structure and

    benchmark their international equity portfolios. The FTSE global equity universe covers over 7,400 securities in 47

    different countries and captures 98 per cent of the worlds investable market capitalisation. FTSE, which is a part of the

    London Stock Exchange Group, is a world-leader in the provision of global index and analytical solutions. FTSE indicesare used extensively by a range of investors such as consultants, asset owners, fund managers, investment banks, stock

    exchanges and brokers.

    dimensional shape. KitKats shape was registered by Nestle in 2006. Cadbury applied to invalidate the registration shortly

    thereafter, claiming that a trait as general as a products shape could not be trademarked.

    FII limit up in ING Vysya Bank

    ING Vysya Bank has informed the Bombay Stock Exchange that the Reserve Bank of India had given its approval for an

    increase in investment limit by FIIs (foreign institutional investors) under PIS (portfolio investment scheme) to 30 per

    cent from 24 per cent of the paid-up capital of ING Vysya Bank.

    RBI revises CDS norms for corporate bonds

    The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has issued revised guidelines for Credit Default Swaps (CDS) for corporate bonds. As

    per the revised guidelines, besides listed corporate bonds, CDS shall be permitted on unlisted but rated corporate bonds

    even for issues other than infrastructure companies. Apart from this, users will be allowed to unwind their Credit Default

    Swaps bought position with original protection seller at mutually agreeable or the Fixed Income Money Market and

    Derivatives Association of India (FIMMDA) price. CDS, as a risk management product, offers the participants the

    opportunity to hive off credit risk and also to assume credit risk which otherwise may not be possible.

    Marico to demerge skin care business

    The restructuring will lead to the companys skin care business being spun off into a separate company, while Maricos

    Consumer Products Business in India (CPB) and the International Business Group (IBG) would be consolidated to be an

    FMCG company. FMCG business company, which is Marico Ltd. (already in existence), and a Skin Care Solutions

    Business Company which will be Marico Kaya Enterprises Ltd (MaKE, to be formed).

    Borg India launches solar power generators

    Alternative energy firm Borg Inc., on Friday, entered the Indian market through its subsidiary, Borg India, with the launch

    of solar power generators aimed at the residential segment, known as the Astra series. The smart grid equipment will only

    use grid power when solar power is unavailable, allowing solar power use to be prioritised whenever sunlight is present.

    ECB rules for infra finance cos relaxed

    Relaxing the external commercial borrowing (ECB) norms, the Reserve Bank of India said non-banking finance

    companies (NBFCs) operating as infrastructure finance companies (IFCs) can now avail themselves of overseas

    borrowings up to 75 per cent of their owned funds without its approval. However, NBFC-IFCs desirous of availing

    themselves of ECBs beyond 75 per cent of their owned funds would require the approval of the RBI and would, therefore

    be considered under the approval route. The RBI move is expected to help such infrastructure finance companies raiseoverseas funds at attractive rates.

    Special offer for women from LIC Housing

    LIC Housing Finance has launched a new home loan product called Bhagyalakshmi for women home seekers. It is

    offered at an interest rate that begins at 10 per cent for the first two years, which is 25 basis points lower than current rates

    and floating rates thereafter.

    Wockhardt said it had received final approval from the United States Food & Drug Administration (U.S. FDA) to market

    Lamotrigine, a drug used to treat epilepsy. Lamotrigine, is the generic name for the brand Lamictal XR. The brand

    Lamictal XR is marketed in the U.S. by Glaxo SmithKline.

    Turkey removes duty on Indian cotton yarn imports

    Biocon gets nod to market anti-psoriasis drug

    Biocon, had received approval from the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) to market its product Itolizumab, used

    in the treatment of psoriasis. The company has received market authorisation from the DCGI for its novel biologic

    Itolizumab, anti-CD6 molecule, for the treatment of chronic plaque psoriasis, Biocon said in a statement. This approval

    paves way for the launch of the drug later in 2013 in India, it added.

    Fertigation, a practice of conjunctive application of fertilizers and water to crop plants is an inevitable component of

    modern day scientific agriculture. Soluble fertilizers like urea, potash and a wide variety of fertilizer mixtures available in

    the market could be well mixed with irrigation water, filtered and then passed through the irrigation unit. However in thepresent situation of increasing demand for organic products and an inclination to organic farming practices, the scope for

    Organic Fertigation is very large. However, there are many hurdles to overcome, in making organic fertigation a reality

    The major hurdle is regarding the solubility of organic manure.

    Calls for shorter, effective treatment regimen with new TB drug

    The U.S. Food & Drug Administration approved the new TB drug bedaquiline, the first since 1963. The fact that the drug

    is active against drug-resistant forms of the disease makes it a potential game changer. In addition to bedaquiline

    developed by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a second new drug that is active against multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-

    TB) called delamanid, developed by Otsuka Pharmaceuticals, is undergoing registration by the European Medicines

    Agency and is expected to be approved for use this year.

    Spyglass surgery: simple and cost-effective

    A one-day Spyglass Direct Visualisation workshop in Hyderabad showcased an advanced surgical procedure in the

    treatment of strictures and stones in the liver, bile duct and pancreas, one that cuts cost by about six times and reduces

    hospitalisation time drastically. The ultra-thin optical fibre, between two and three millimetres in diameter had a probe,

    A Black Beauty from Red Planet

    A Martian meteorite containing 10 times more water than average could unlock clues to the Red Planets evolution from a

    warm, wet past to its current cold and dry state. The new meteorite, designated NWA (Northwest Africa) 7034 and

    nicknamed Black Beauty, is a dark, fist-sized rock that landed in the Sahara Desert in 2011. Unlike most Martian

    meteorites, it is thought to be from the planets surface, not deeper inside, and to date from a crucial time in its evolution

    The abundance of water molecules in the rock about 6,000 parts per million, 10 times more than other known

    meteorites suggest water activity persisted on the Martian surface at that time, known as the Amazonian epoch.
