Rush doesn't crap outon Roll The Bones tourRush continues to come up with anything but"snake eyes" on their Roll The Bones tour. The band has been packing arenas throughoutNorth America, including recent dates inOttawa, Montreal and Quebec City.

The bones will temporarily stop rollingfora Christmas break with a homecoming dateat Toronto's Maple Leaf Gardens on Dec.16th. The band, along with the TragicallyHip, will donate proceeds from theperformance to the United Way. A minimumof $7.00 per ticket will be donated. The DailyBread Food Bank will also be a recipient of theband's good will as concert -goers areencouraged to bring a bag of canned goods tothe Gardens.

In the new year, the band will hit the roadagain with a tentative date for Vancouverscheduled for February. The band then plansto tour Europe beginning in April.

Bryan Adams sweepsAustralian music awardsCanadian superstar, Bryan Adams has takenhome top honours in the International categoryat the Australian Music Awards (Nov. 23) inMelbourne.

The A&M recording star won MostPopular International Male, Most PopularSong for (Everything I Do) I Do It For You andMost Popular International album for Wakin'Up The Neighbours.

Adams has also been honoured as BestMale Vocalist of 1991 by three Germanmagazines: Popcorn, Bravo and Pop Rocky. He is currently playing to sold -out audiencesin Europe and plans to play Australia inFebruary of next year.

Dangerous "makes streetdate" at Zellers - KennedySeveral skids of product were spirited awayfrom Saturn's Toronto warehouse on Nov. 22.Included were Michael Jackson's newDangerous CD, plus Genesis and Princeproduct among others, "A little bit ofeverything," says Saturn President LeonardKennedy. It's expected however that theshipment was heavy on Jackson's much talked -about new release. An audit is underway todetermine the dollar value, which will alsoreveal the number of Jackson CDs that aremissing. All the product was apparentlystickered with Zellers logos.

In view of the investigation that isunderway by Metro Toronto Police andinsurance investigators, Kennedy was unableto even suggest an estimate of the loss. It hasbeen rumoured by those in the industryhowever, that the dollar value could range ashigh as $250,000.

Contrary to news reports, which indicatedthat Zellers stores would not have the JacksonCD, Kennedy assures that "Zellers definitelyhad Jackson CD product in their stores. Weworked through the weekend to get the storesback in stock position, which weaccomplished. We made the street date (Nov.25)." The shipment that went missing wasdestined for Zellers stores in Ontario andQuebec, the last two markets to be serviced forthe pre-release date.

Guitarist Sambora sings praises of VancouverA broad smile creased across the face of BonJovi guitarist, Richie Sambora, when a reportermentioned Vancouver to him backstage, afterhis recentoutstanding solo show heperformedat Toronto's Concert Hall.

"Vancouver has been mucho good to meand I'll be back for sure," the handsomeaxeman said, looking like he just stepped offhis solo album cover, dressed in leather pantsand broad brim hat.

Indeed, Vancouver has been very good

to Bon Jovi and a lot of other bands thatheaded to Vancouver in the wake of Jovi'smonster platinum sales. "But we were thefirst," Sambora proudly stated.

An hour before, Sambora had climaxedhis show with a jam that included Canada'sAldo Nova on guitar and Gowan on vocals."That was a lot of fun, Jon and I have knownAldo for years."

Backstage, Sambora took the time tosign autographs and offer a hug to someyounger girls who were near tears at meetingtheir idol. Of course, the perennial longlegged backstage ladies were in attendancewith the skirts that went up to here and the topsthat plunged down to there.

Bon Jovi drummer, Tico Torres, alongfor Sambora's solo tour, stood looking onwith an amused smile but turned serious whenasked if they were going to have Canada'sBruce Fairbairn on board as producer for thenext Bon Jovi album.

"We'd love to have him again, but weunderstand he's committed to producingAerosmith in January. We're hoping to getBob Rock to do it."

Asked to explain the magic, multi -platinum formula that Fairbairn has come upwith every band from AC/DC to Bon Jovi toAerosmith, Torres said there was no one specialthing. "Bruce has just got a very good ear andcan bring out the best in a band, which is whata good producer is all about."

Who were those shadowy figures . ?I wondered what the building at 4881 YongeStreet had in common when I noticed the Junoand CARAS people in the vicinity of thelobby. I checked the directory and there are acouple of restaurants, one being the GoldenGriddle, but it was too late for breakfast. There were also offices for the ConsoluteGeneral of Pakistan and the Jamaican LiaisonServices, the Internal Audit Bureau, TheEmployment and Immigration Services andthe Royal Bank. Now, that really makes for anintriguing scenario. Are they thinking of takingthe Junos to Jamaica . . . or Pakistan? Maybethe CCMA is extending an open door to countryacts from Pakistan and/or Jamaica. Could theInternal Audit Bureau be arranging pleabargaining for next year's tickets? Then again, they might have been looking for jobs at theEmployment and Immigration Services ... or

just banking their money. Oh, Yes! Balmur'soffices are in that building. But they couldn'tbe meeting with Leonard Rambeau . . . couldthey? (EC: I wouldn't never have guessed it.Say it's not true . . . !)

Bryan Adams Un-Canadian??? Well, I'veheard everything. Bruce Allen sure stirred upa whole country when he took on the CRTCregulations ... the very regulations that madehim rich and infamous. He also took on AnneMurray about not showing up at the Junos andhe was wrong that time too. Allen likes to stirup shit and some people take him seriously. He knows how to manipulate the media . . .

hold them in the palm of his hand and makethem react to his every whim. Now, I hear thatthe CRTC have taken him seriously and evenKeith (The Phantom) Spicer is ready to dosomething stupid. Bruce! A joke is a joke, butthis has gone too far. Phone the CRTC andapologize. Bryan doesn't need a handout.(EC: Bruce Allen apologize? But that doestake a load off my mind!!!)

Only SOCAN, you say ... ? What folly isthis. A government -funded songwritingcontest that's restricted to SOCAN members? Is this a government -sponsored membershipdrive? We'll be hearing from the others, I'msure. Does that mean that Brian Mulroneycan't enter? (EC: He can't sing either . . . butDavid Foster does wonders for him . . . !)

When Paul's away . . . ! Well, our verypublic retail figure, Paul Alofs missed all thefun. But when he gets back he'll have theopportunity to explain away in a column orletter or two about the shenanigans at HMV'sScarborough Town Centre store. Was thereenough security? Did the mall people knowabout the concert? Better still, did they knowit was a rap group (Naughty By Nature)? Thename alone would have even been enoughwarning for a United Church minister. If themall was closed for two hours . . . are othermerchants, not to mention a very large retailer, considering some kind of legal action? Beingclosed for two hours, someone said, couldhave resulted in a $200,000 loss for some, orat least one. (EC: A tempest in a teapot . . . !)

The manure and mink set ... ! Thanks toDyanne and David Halliday, Fran and MelShaw, I had the opportunity to walk among themink and manure at the Royal Horse Show.We also saw Don Ierulla's newly -boughtjumper in action. She scored a record time, butunfortunately lost out by just a fraction of asecond. A great looking horse . . . but $2.5million . ? (EC: Didn't you read the denialin RPM . . . ?)

Tommy Hunter . . . going, going? TheSun's Gary Dunford has picked up on thathurtin' thorn in the side of some of the CBChierarchy, the Tommy Hunter Show. Thevoices in the hall have been getting louder.Besides, the charts indicate that country islooking fora younger image. So, maybe Dunf'sonto something this time. If you wait longenough, most rumours do come to pass. If theHunter show goes, maybe the CRTC will takethat country channel away from the Nashvillecrowd, who, for reasons, I think I'm one of the

few to know, won out against a very reliableCanadian contender. The Hunter Show, itstoken Cancon entry, really didn't say toomuch for our homegrown acts, who had tofight for recognition against the Nashvillemob. (EC: Country's about to come out of thecloset . . !)

The ink is dry . . . ? I've heard it from acouple of sources, not too reliable, both ofthem, that the ink is almost dry and corks areabout to be popped on the champagne with theannouncement that Capitol has taken Virginunder its wing. Another source told me thatVirgin had taken over Capitol, PolyGram,MCA and BMG ... just to be safe. (EC: I readit right here, so it must be true . . .

Good news and more good news!!! Thestores are loaded, the crowds are waiting fora little more snow . . . and ZOWIE . . . weshould have a great holiday sales season. COVER STORY - by David Pierson

Canada's premier publicistClosing in on 30 years as Canada's premierpublicist, Gino Empry has certainly got a lotof wonderful memories of stars, shows andevents to draw on when recounting his career. But his all-time favourite was when he broughtthe actress Glenda Jackson and jazz great EllaFitzgerald together.

"Over the years, I've found stars arenotoriously shy people out of the limelightand those two are no exception. But Glendatold me that Ella was her favourite singer andshe was so disappointed that she was going to

Cochrane hits No. 1 again! Tom Cochranehits the top of the Albums chart with Mad MadWorld. He also holds down the No. 1 positionon the Hit Tracks chart. He's not likely toretain either of those positions next weekhowever. There are a host of songs that arevery close and will be battling for top spot. The Albums chart appears to be readying forU2 and Genesis to duel for No. 1 next week.

Five and counting ... With Tom Cochrane' sLife Is A Highway remaining on top of the HitTracks chart, Canadian artists have now heldthe No. 1 spot on the Hit Tracks chart for fivestraight weeks. What's the longest stretch forCanadian artists holding down the No. 1 spot?

No surprise for top album add. MichaelJackson's Dangerous is the top album add atNo. 23. That's considerably lower than hisprevious album. Bad entered the chart at No.11. Dangerous should make a healthy moveup the chart with a full week in stores.

No room at the top! Stevie Ray Vaughan'sThe Sky Is Crying and Supertramp's 25thanniversary both enter the Top 20 on theAlbums chart. With albums from Naughty ByNature, Richard Marx, Michael Jackson,Nirvana and the Two Room collection allclose to breaking into the Top 20, the questionis can everyone make it? The answer is no. It'slikely Ozzie Osbourne and Tom Petty willdrop out of the Top 20, making room for twoalbums to enter. After that, it will be a closebattle next week.

Badd is good . . . Color Me Badd have thehighest entry on the Hit Tracks chart this weekwith A114 Love. It debuts at No. 50. They havequickly gained acceptance with CanadianMusic Directors. Their first release, I AdoreMi Amore, didn't make it into the top half ofthe chart until its fifth week.

It was only a few months ago! The longeststretch for Canadian artists at No. 1 is 9 weeks. It was set by Bryan Adams, Bryan Adams andBryan Adams. (Everything I Do) I Do It ForYou was on top that long. OK OK a bit of atrick question. The second longest run at No.1 is 5 weeks. That was in 1969 when AndyKim, Motherlode, and The Guess Who teamedup to hold the top spot that long. That markwas equalled this week by the Adams/Cochrane team.

has no plans to retiremiss her show since she had to be onstage ina play herself that night.

"So I said, 'no problem, let's go to herrehearsal.' So I took her down and knocked onElla's door and Glenda held backbut Ella wasthrilled and said, 'oh, bring her in, she's myfavorite actress.' And they hit it offfabuously."

Getting Empry to talk about himself israther hard as he admits to a terrible shynesswhen not working. However, mention thenames of the stars which cover his office wallswith personally autographed photos, then theanecdotes start flowing.

Elvis Presley?"I met him in '72 at the Niagara Falls

Convention Centre. They couldn't come intoCanada because of all the guns he and hisentourage carried. Spoke with him for fiveminutes, very shy and polite, but verycharismatic."

Ann Margaret?"A very down-to-earth lady. Totally

professional and a terrific entertainer."Frank Sinatra?"I don't know why he's got a reputation

as being difficult. I've always found him to bea gentleman."

Peggy Lee?"She's one of my oldest and best friends.

I stay at her place in Bel Air when I visit LosAngeles. When she calls she always sings heropening greeting."

Tina Turner?"When I used to book Tina at the Imperial

Room, the management complained that shedidn't wear enough clothes. Of course theydidn't complain that the house was alwayspacked. I knew she was going to be big andwas very happy for her when she brokethrough."

Hal Linden, who quipped after hisopening song at the Imperial Room, "what thehell is Barney Miller doing singing in a nightclub?"

"People forget that Hal was an actor/singer on Broadway for years before histelevision show."

Born and raised in Toronto, Emptyfounded his public relations agency in 1963,the same year he signed his first client, the

Royal Alexandra Theatre, commencing acareer -long relationship with the flamboyantentrepreneur Ed Mirvish.

When the sod was recently turned onMirvish's new theatre to be built in downtownToronto, Empry managed to get the past, present and future Lieutenant Governors ofOntario to attend. "I like doing deals andpromotions that people say can't be done."

Empty was Tony Bennett's manager for10 years and currently represents Peggy Lee,Roger Whittaker, figure skating championBrian Pockar, actor/director William Hutt, ballet star Karen Kain, comedian Andre -Philippe Gagnon, actors Ken James, CraigRussell and Robin Ward, plus PlayboyMagazine.

Despite the countless offers to go the US,Empty said that he prefers being the big fishin the small pond, which really isn't all thatsmall a pond, considering Toronto is the thirdlargest entertainment centre in North America.

"I love the hustle and bustle of L.A. andNew York but I always like coming back toToronto. People always ask me if I'm ready toretire? Retire to what? I love this business anddon't ever want to leave it. I'm just getting mysecond wind."

Valleyfield's KOD 137 setsindustry first for CanadaA first in Canada's broadcasting industry tookplace on Nov. 26 at 5 pm at Brasserie Labattin Montreal. At that time Jean-Pierre Major,President of Radio Express Inc. announcedthat KOD 137 Valleyfield was the first radiostation in Canada to adopt a 100 percentCancon only format, 24 hours a day.

"No foreign artists on KOD 137," boastsMajor, "no francophones from France,Belgium, no anglophones from England or theUS, just 100 percent of our own artists. OnNovember 26th, the record industry has a newpartner."

Many recording artistsplus officials fromSOCAN, Musicaction, Gens de la radio andofficials from the federal and provincialcommunications ministries assisted in theMontreal premiere.

Major concludes with "what we wishnow is that other Canadian broadcasters willfollow KOD 137's example."

LOVE & SASCall My NameBMG - 06192-10612-2-N

Is this the album that puts Canada onthe international dance scene map?Love & Sas certainly hope so and itcould be a very real possibility as theduo have secured a US record dealwith RCA. Excellent production byRichie Mayer and David Bendeth, whowrote all the songs, give this releasea very real chance of burning updance floors and radio stations' dancelists. I Don't Need Yo' Kiss and CallMy Name are pretty funky workouts, while the rest of the release is filledwith light, pleasing MOR ballads likeOnce In A Lifetime and Change ofHeart. (CD reviewed) - DP

Hammer expanded the scope andappeal of rap and on Too Legit hemoves in new musical directions.Writing with his co -producer, FeltonC. BARRY MANILOW - PopShowstoppersArista - 0782-18687-2-N

The time for this Manilow, Eddie Arkinproduction couldn't be better, and thematerial right down Manilow's Tin PanAlley vocal magic. He is more at homewith this type of material than most, and the tribute he pays to some ofthese modern day masters is superb.Priceless tracks like I'll Be SeeingYou and Bring Him Home. This is oneof those good for giving packageswith 18 tracks. Try on the Guys AndDolls medley featuring Manilow,Michael Crawford and Hinton Battle.Great stuff. Worth the price of the CDalone. The Kid Inside, written by CraigCarnelia, has been taken as the pri-ority track and is included on theBMG Pop Promo CD No. 26. Shouldgarner AC play. Front -rack thisitem. A must for Santa's stocking.(CD reviewed) - WG

RUSS IRWINRuss IrwinSBK K2 -96915-F

A left -fielder songwriter with a deliv-ery and vocal magic to match. Irwinhas a laid-back, but 'hey we're in ahurry' approach to his music whichdraws on rock and jazz with morethan a bit of classical overtones. Tosay he gets into the lyrical content ofthe material is an understatement. There seems to be a personal yetcompetitive edge to his soaring vocalstyle that has no bounds, probablythe influence of producer PhilRamone, no slouch when It comes tothis kind of talent. Key, Is My HeartBelongs To You, taken as the firstsingle, and Get Outta Town, a verypoignant message ballad. All songswere written by Irwin with the excep-tion of Don't Like The Way You LookAt My Love, which was written by

Wiseman likes to keep busy. So, inbetween producing other artists andsolo shows, Wiseman has found timeto release his third solo album. Thetitle pokes fun at corporate rock spon-sorship and there are numerous otherhumourous spots throughout the al-bum. But beneath the humour,Wiseman takes a searing look at theplight of the North American Indian onthree of the tracks. Etude #10 opus666 has a fellow friend musician play-ing the electric rake and yes, the 666is a Joke for all those looking for hid-den devil messages in songs. Not aneasy listen, but an Interesting one.

ETTA JAMESR&B DynamiteFlair Nirgin - 2-91695-0

Etta James has got a voice that couldcurl the hairs of her blonde wig. Oftenregarded as the queen of R&B, thisbest of collection Is a must for anyonewho likes their lady singers with brassand balls. Alternately asserting her-self on tracks like Woman, Hey Henry,Tough Lover and then bemoaning herlover on tracks like I'm A Fool, HowBig A Fool and Hope You're Satisfied,James delivers the R&B goods withstyle. B.B. KING - BluesThe Best of B.B. King Vol. 1Flair Nirgln - 2-91691-0

B.B. King said recently that his latestrelease was his best album, but he'dbe hard pressed to top this best ofcollection. One classic after another, starting with his first hit, Three O'ClockBlues, continuing on Into Sweet LittleAngel, Every Day (I Have The Blues),Sweet Sixteen and closing with therocking Please Love Me. No dross

amongst these 20 gems and a per-fect sampling to show the debt that allthose British blues boys owe the Kingof the Blues. (CD reviewed) - DP

JERMAINE JACKSON - FunkYou Said, You SaidLaFace - LFPCD-4003-N

Too bad the critics are only inter-ested in what Jermaine says abouthis brother, and too bad Jermaineis such a big mouth. He's got tal-ent, lots of talent, as displayed onthis set produced by the LaFaceFamily. You Said is now beginningto take hold with AC programmersand his album should commandchart action shortly. This Jacksonhas a way with ballads, and theyappear to be tailor-made for him, probably because of his writingcronies: L.A.Reid, Babyface andDaryl Simmons. He does a duetwith Babyface on Treat You Rightand that's Vernon Reid of LivingColour providing the guitar fire onRebel (With A Cause). Lots of greatstuff here if you can just digthrough the brother battlebullshit. (CD reviewed) - WG

BIG IDEA - RockBig IdeaArtiste Records CD -108

The Big Idea are Montreal guitaristRobert Martins and Peterboroughorganist/bassist Tony Collins. Astrange, but nonetheless obviouslycompatible team. Good fare forthe campus crowd that should spillover to the mainstream, If they getthe right break. Welcome To TheWorld, taken as the first single, should command both AOR andCHR radio play and that shouldopen the door to even more spunkpop and rock, like Everyone's Man,Face To The Ground, Blue Of TheWater and every strange, but like-able Paperback Writer. The vocal, and, for that matter, the writingapproach Is quite refreshing. Mar-tins and Collins work off each otherand the tussle evolves into a finely -crafted package of solid entertain-ment. Retail Council honours to HMV's Yonge Street storeThe Retail Council of Canada recentlybestowed its Retail Advertising and MarketingCommunications Award of Merit on HMVCanada. The award was in recognition ofHMV's campaign to launch its superstore at333 Yonge Street, which began in Decemberof 1990 and continued beyond its May 3,1991grand opening.

The campaign was tagged as "unique",in that it "successfully combined the need tobuild awareness for the new store with astrong product focus."

On being informed of the award, PaulAlofs, President, HMV Canada noted, "wewere really excited about the marketingprogramme that launched our Toronto

HMV Canada President Paul Alofs with Alert'sKim Mitchell.

superstore. It was truly a team effort, includingextraordinary support from the record labelsuppliers. The commitment from our staff, agencies and suppliers resulted in excellentvalue for the money spent. The marketingcampaign was extremely successful on anumber of dimensions and we appreciateeveryone's contribution."

Alofs went on to point out, "the launchprogramme for the superstore successfully

put music in front of a lot of people, which isextremely beneficial for the music industryoverall. We retailers have to use the co-opfunds available to us to get the public excitedabout music. Unfortunately, due to the lack ofcreativity and vision, much of the co-op fundsspent by retailers are basically wasted."

Since its opening, the Yonge Street storehas reportedly performed "well above originalexpectations," and is nowpositioned as one ofthe leading record retailing outlets in NorthAmerica.

McKennitt's WEA debut reaches gold sales status

The Visit, Loreena McKennitt's debut releasefor WEA, has reached sales of gold status inCanada. Fueled by the single release ofGreensleeves, which is No. 7 on the RPM ACchart, the album has made good gains up theRPM 100 where it is at No. 28 this week afteronly five weeks of charting.

The success of McKennitt's debut heraldsthe rush release of three more of her albumsthat were previously released but are nowavailable via Warner Music Canada.

Parallel Dreams was first released onMcKennitt's Quinlan Road label in 1989. Thealbum sold more than 25,000 units, primarilythrough word of mouth. Producer BrianHughes, who worked on The Visit, alsocollaborated on this album as guitarist andcomposer. However, the majority of thematerial on this album was written byMcKennitt.

Elemental was first released by McKenittin 1985 and also released on her Quinlan Roadlabel. The material here is described as a"blend of the traditional with the experimentaland Celtic harp. McKennitt, as with The Visit, borrows from some of the well-known poetsof yesteryear including W.B. Yeats (StolenChild) and William Black (Lullaby). Alsoincluded are popular Celtic folk songs SheMoved Through The Fair and Carrighfergus.

To Drive The Cold Winter Away wasreleased in 1987 and was previously availableonly on cassette. The release is timely in thatif offers what is described as "a differentlook" at Christmas and the winter season.Included are little-known carols and seasonalsongs with a modern audience in mind. Thealbum was recorded in a variety of locations, from a Canadian church to an artists' retreat,to a Benedictine monastery near Limerick,Ireland.

Pharis targets charity for Littlest Christmas AngelHod Pharis, regarded as an Alberta legend, has returned to radio in time for Christmas(RPM - Nov. 2/91). His vehicle is The LittlestChristmas Angel, a narrative with sistersHeather and Paula Fleming, native Calgarians, now living in Edmonton, supplyingbackground vocals. Composer/arranger JoHanson wrote the music for the track. He isbest known for his work on 15 CalgaryStampede Grandstand Shows as well as theMedal Ceremonies at the 1988 Calgary WinterOlympics.

Lyricist Dawna Roskies, also a Calgarian, reportedly wrote the song in a scorching Augustheatwave three years ago. Former CalgarianGary Kollger produced the track, which was

recorded at Edmonton's Beta Sound Recorders. The Littlest Angel is available on cassette

single as A Christmas Card from Heaven - tothe Heart of an Old Cowboy, complete withenvelope, Christmas Card, story, sheet musicand song.

ATI' s Scoot Irwin, the Toronto andCalgary -based independent, on which thecassette has been released, reports that a dealhas been struck with Trend Records for therelease of the evergreen Christmas song cardfor next year. Additional copies may beobtained from Applause in Mount RoyalVillage (a project of the Calgary Centre forPerforming Arts) or through ATI Records inToronto or Calgary.

Pharis was born in Pincher Creek, Albertaand lived in Calgary during most of his career. He retired to B.C.'s Okanagan in the lateeighties. He first gained fame in country musicin 1951 when he wrote and recorded Call OfThe Mountain. An interesting aside to therecording is that to obtain the "echo effect" onthe record, Ann Little performed thebackground vocals in the men's washroom.

I Heard The Bluebird Sing was writtenby Pharis in 1952 and recorded by Hal LonePine and Betty Cody. He claims that at thetime he "came awful close to throwing itaway." However, in 1957 the song wasrecorded and became a hit for Jim, Ed Maxineand Bonnie Brown, and today is in the classicgold category in country music.

Plans are now underway to put a familyshow together for a tour.

Larry and Willie morning show hosts of 99.5The Fox have made a pledge to meet all theirlisteners, all 350,000 of them, in one year. Each week, the popular pair are set to go outand meet and greet their listeners. They willhave meeting booths set up at trade fairs,

concerts and whereverpo ssib le, complete withan automatic LED display reading "Larry &Willy Meet Every Listener" which will alsosupply the number of listeners they have metat the time. A budget of $10,000 has beenallocated for the project. As big-heartedProgram Director JJ Johnston points out,"unlike all those other stations, who giveaway one big prize and everyone else getsshafted, Larry & Willy will share the budgetwith everyone. That works out to 3 centseach." Each person met will get a suitably

Whiz kid making things less mellow at CJEZ"God forbid, that I ever get back on air again.I was absolutely awful and have no desire toever get behind a microphone again. Besides,I much prefer working behind the scenesanyway."

So explains Vince DeLilla, a 26 -year -oldwhiz kid, who is Director of Operations, forToronto's CJEZ, an easy listening station thatis expecting big numbers when the BBMratings book comes out.

In his eight years in radio, DeLilla hasworked in numerous positions which he sayshas been invaluable in terms of his role asDirector of Operations. "I started out as anoperator, moved to production, did some on -air, where I was really bad. I've been involvedin commercial traffic at CJEZ for the last twoyears. I'm really glad that I've moved around,it's given me great insight and understandingof all the different departments."

DeLilla feels the key to CJEZ's successis working together as a team with the keypeople in different departments. "Bob Wood, the general manager here, has put together abunch of fantastic people and it's been a joyto work with pros like John Majhor."

Regarding CJEZ's new format of easylistening without the ultra -mellow moodmusic, DeLilla says that the station went from13th to 7th in last rating sweeps and thestation is hoping their audience will keep ongrowing.

"We're targeting that older 35 plus agegroup who've mellowed a little, but still wantsomething with a little kick. Jailhouse Rockmight be a little jarring but we' II play somethingby Elvis like Teddy Bear or Love Me. I meaneven my dad still likes to rock and roll and taphis foot."
