A&A files for bankruptcy in attempt to restructureSound Insight Limited, owner and operator ofthe A &A Records and Tapes chain and wholly -owned subsidiary of Sound Insight EnterprisesLimited, has filed for bankruptcy under theBankruptcy Act.

The decision by Sound Insight Ltd. to doso stems from the company's inability to sup-port the "aggressive expansion program" itundertook in 1989, when, during the followingtwo-year period the chain opened close to 100stores, bringing A&A's national total to 259.

Garth Mitchell, President and CEO ofboth Sound Insight Enterprises Limited andSound Insight Limited said that with the retailclimate being in fair shape at best, the "currenteconomic environment has critically impactedthe A&A chain's operations," but he addsemphatically that the sole purpose of filing forbankruptcy is to enable the company to "re-structure, become financially stable, come outof the bankruptcy and be able to function in thatrestructured form."

Mitchell notes that Canadian laws make itdifficult when a business runs into difficultiesbecause there are no provisions to restructure

International release forPolyGram's Medley debutSue Medley's self -titled debut album has re-ceived much praise since its release last May,including Best Debut Recording and FemaleVocalist Of The Year at Canada's West CoastMusic Awards, and gained her the opportunityto open for Bob Dylan on the Canadian leg ofhis international tour. Now PolyGram is hopingthat the enthusiasm will run over into three newterritories, the U.S., U.K. and Germany.

The interest that she has generated has leftMedley breathless and very busy: "I was ex-cited by the whole thing when the album wasreleased," she says. "But I didn't think thatpeople would respond to us as strongly as theyhave." And of her tour with Dylan she statesthat the experience was the "highlight of theyear."

The first single has already been releasedin the U.S., U.K. and Germany, and in Canadawe can expect a fourth single from the album,Maybe The Next Time. Of her career, Medleysays she is going for longevity rather than one -hit wonders: "My goal is really to start buildingan audience that will be with me for the next tenyears."

without first going into bankruptcy, and thatthis "is quite painful for many people."

At this point, Sound Insight Limited ispreparing a proposal to present to creditorsregarding outstanding debts, and if it is ac-cepted, the company can come out of the bank-ruptcy.

The proposal must fulfil three primaryrequirements: the closure of certain stores thathave proven to be unprofitable, the deferral orconversion of the existing shareholder debt ofover $9 million, and an "injection of new capi-tal."

Mitchell says this new capital is expectedto come from one of a "series of interestedinvestors who are currently quantifying theirpositions" with regard to the company. Heestimates that they will have a proposal ready

New BMG Presidentand General ManagerRudi Gassner, President and CEO of BMGInternational announced in New York just daysago that Bob Jamieson has been appointed newPresident and General Manager of BMG Can-ada.

within the next three weeks, and that initiativesoutlined to pare down the company will beginonce it is accepted by creditors.

"We are not doing this to shut down," saysMitchell. "We are trying to get rid of thosecomponents that have made the company un-healthy. It would be a very good business if itwas a little smaller than it is, and that is thepurpose of (this action). I am confident that therestructured company will remain Canada'slargest retailer of pre-recorded music."

Getting radio airplay in a saturated music marketOne thing that could make or break a new artistis getting radio airplay. Traditionally, productis serviced to radio by record companies, butover the last two years the newest trend hasbeen the CD compilation. This system allowsan artist to purchase a spot on a compilation CDwithout having to put out a complete album, and they can feel around for interest throughminimal expenditure. Companies that makeCD comps also track the song for a specifictime and pitch it to relevant radio stations, andthe system has become a popular one.

Unfortunately, as the number of CDcompilations has grown, the likelihood of Pro-gramme Directors taking the time to siftthrough the multitude of CD comps they get tofind a particular track is getting slimmer andslimmer. The ever-increasing influx of CDcomps has made it necessary for it to have awell-known name attached to it, a lot ofpromo-tion and perhaps a small miracle.

Q107, Toronto's leading AOR station'sMusic Director, Joey Vendetta, says that itwould be pretty unlikely for him to put a trackfrom a CD comp into any kind of rotation. "Igenerally give precedence to music that is al-ready on a label," he states, adding that if thetrack is not available to the consumer he seeslittle point in playing a CD comp song excepton a feature programme.

Frankie D. is a solo artist from Torontoand decided on another route to gain airplay.Although he has an album ready to go on hisand partner Mike Cecere's own label, StallionRecords, they decided to put out CD singles, anunconventional and expensive method.

"Our main goal right now is to get airplay, and we think doing the CD single is the bestway. If we get a good response from the first, second and possibly third single, then we willput the album out." Explains Cecere.

This strategy enables Frankie D. to retainoptimum control over his project. "We did lookfor a deal at one point," he says. "But we neverfelt the companies were willing to give us the100 percent that we wanted." Frankie D. alsonotes that if and when enough action happens

on the songs, they will have better biddingpower when it time to get distribution.

Currently, Frankie D.'s first single, IWanna Go To Heaven, is getting good responsefrom radio stations nationwide. Many haveproposed a feature for the song, and somesecondary market stations have added the songto their playlist. It's a positive start, and enoughenthusiasm has been shown to convinceFrankie D. that he chose an effective method.

Another band, Two Thirds Water, won aspot on Toronto alternative station CFNY'sModern Music CD compilation. Because theradio station will give air time to the winners, endorsing them as artist worthy of attention, this is a productive means to gain exposure.

Since the compilation came out, TwoThirds Water has generated a lot of interest, and

Annihilator create buzzon European Priest tourCanadian band Annihilator has been creatingquite the stir in Europe, where they were pickedout of dozens bands to be the opening act on theJudas Priest tour, which includes 45 datesthroughout Europe and Britain. Annihilatorwill also be doing their own headline dates inAthens and at the Marquis Club in London.

I laving sold a total of 350,000 units withtheir two albums, Alice In Hell and their currentrelease, Never Neverland, Annihilator haveestablished themselves as world class metalrockers, and have generated a lot of interestthroughout North America, Japan and now Eu-rope.

In response to suggestions that tourshould be cancelled or pared down because ofthe Gulf War, Annihilator stated simply that"the show must go on!"

Simpson appointed newGeneral Manager at SBSSeltech Broadcasting Systems Limited, a satel-lite communications company based in Toronto, has recently appointed Mark Simpson as newGeneral Manager for the company.

SBS is a wholly -owned subsidiary of Sel-tech Satellite Corporation which delivers net-work programs and services to Canadian radiostations. As General Manager, Simpson willhead a variety of activities for the company, undertaking to work in association with thebroadcasting and advertising communities todevelop "efficient and practical uses of networkeconomies and satellite activities."

With close to fifteen years of experience inthe radio and television broadcasting and repre-sentation fields, SBS is confident Simpson willprovide clients with a "variety of network salesand marketing opportunities."

SBS' parent company, Seltech SatelliteCorporation, pioneered the integration of theuse of satellite technology in broadcasting, andis a Canadian leader in providing audio and dataprograms to radio and other media outlets. band member Scott Cryer attributes a lot of theits progress to the CD, saying that it has giventhe band the confidence to shop carefully for arecord deal. "We're going to take it easy andnot rush into anything," he says. "We want adeal that's on our terms as well as the recordcompany's."

These are only two methods to get all-important airplay for music. The commonthread is imagination and perseverance. Whenasked what it would take to get a station to atleast listen to a tune by an unsigned artist, oneMusic Director put it this way: "If the artistcalled me a lot and hassled me about it, I'd giveit a listen."

Second shoe to drop!! After the A&Ashocker, although everyone in the industrysuspected it, there isn't a sound while the busi-ness waits for the second shoe to drop. II i t111111A tip of the hat to The Diamond!Say what you will about The Diamond, but Iwould like to take my hat off to the club and itsstaff for six and a half great years of music andmemories. During this time they were one ofthe most organized and professional club staffsin the country and most cooperative with boththe artists and the labels.

No better example of this can be shownthen by what what happened the day the clubclosed. DGC recording artists The Throbs werebooked into the club on Wednesday January16. It was to be their Canadian debut. Around 3pm that day it became apparent that the clubcould not open that night. first thing thatclub manager Randy Charlton proceeded to dowas to find a new venue for the band

At the same time Sharon Garvey was onthe phone to MCA informing us that they hadarranged to move the show to Rock 'n RollHeaven. Within an hour The Diamond, Rock 'nRoll Heaven and MCA had managed to alert themedia to the venue change and the show wentoff without a hitch.

The Diamond staff had better things to dothen act as agents for another club and the staffat Rock 'n Roll Heaven hadn't planned onspending one of their days off working at theclub. Thanks to Randy and Sharon at The Dia-mond and Gareth and his staff at Rock 'n RollHeaven for making an ugly a little easier totake.Cameron CarpenterDGC Label ManagerMCA Records Canada

wished to send. There was apparently GREATenthusiasm from across the country, which re-sulted in this beautiful gesture of "home" sup-port arriving in the Gulf just before Christmas.(EC.' It just goes to show the power that radiostations have . . . 1)

Just a phone call away... ! I had a guy phoneme this week enquiring about Enigma Records. He had heard they had gone bankrupt. I askedhim if he had called the record company. No! Hehadn't. Well, I did and Derek Ross was still thereand still as enthusiastic about Enigma as he hasalways been. In fact he was very happy to reportthat The Skydiggers, one of Enigma's signings,is opening for the Blue Rodeo tour. He alsofaxed me a very interesting piece on the com-pany that appeared in the Jan/Feb '91 issue ofOption Magazine. (EC: A rumour is a rumour ifyou want it to be a rumour . . . !)

Do-it-yourself promotion In this granted, subsidized, compilation industry ... I often geta phone call from some enterprising youngtalent who has a track "out" and wants to giveme a phone hype! So I may have the time to tellhim to put together a press release and send a italong with a photo and the CD, cassette orwhatever and it's rewarding to see how some ofthese homemade presentations look when theyarrive. Not four-colour, not shiny and polished, but sincere and once in a while the sound seemsto be there! The thing that stars are made of!!(EC: It has to start somewhere!)

-Through these portals ... have walked themost successful and respected people in theCanadian music industry." These words areabove the door to RPM's offices. (EC: Fewpeople have noticed, because they are typed onapiece of masking tape and cover a crack in theplaster!) Children's Group/Hammond take Classical Kids goldA&M distributed label, The Children's Group, has just put two of it's releases past the 50,000units sold mark, an accomplishment labelPresident Glen Sernyk feels "would indicatewe're doing something right!"

Beethoven Lives Upstairs, winner of the1989 Juno Award for best children's recording, and Mr. Bach Comes To Call are the two initialalbums of the Classical Kids series by musicianSusan Hammond which have gone gold in Can-ada. The third release, Mozart's Magic Fan-tasy, is already shipping in high numbers, andhas been on release in the U.S. since the end ofJanuary.

Hammond, a pianist and music teacher, has long wanted to take on a project that wouldmake classical music listener -friendly to

youngsters."I knew that I could excite kids about

classical music," said Hammond, recently backfrom a North Amercian promo tour for the se-ries. "It's not the music that's boring, but theway it's presented."

Hammond also cites children's love ofstorytelling as inspiration for the albums, which combine classical pieces of music, nar-ration and colourful sound effects. The projecthas proved to be appealing not only to theinitial target audience of 6-10 year -olds, butalso to younger children and especially educa-tors, who use the recordings to teach musichistory to young people even at high schoollevel.

Hammond hooked up with The Children'sGroup close to its inception under a year ago,and is excited at the enthusiasm the project isgenerating.

Label -owner and President, Sernyk is nonewcomer to the genre. During his universitydays he met Canadian children's entertainer,Raffi, and became his manager. He also helpedcreate Troubador Records, the label that carries

True North reactivateswith new Toronto signingTrue North Records, the label which carriesBruce Cockburn and which is owned by man-ager Bernie Finkelstein, will be releasing thedebut album by Gregory Hoskins and TheStickpeople later this month. The release marksthe first signing by the label in five years.

Jehanne Languedoc, True North's Direc-tor of Promotion/ Publicity as well as Directorof the label's publishing arm, said that "it wasdecided that we would begin signing new actsagain, and we are also looking into licensingforeign product for Canada." In the fall of1990, the label secured a licensing agreementwith Sony Music, who will look after all themanufacturing and distribution responsibilties.

Produced by Jon Goldsmith of BruceCockburn and Jane Siberry fame, GregoryHoskins and The Stickpeople's album is entitedMoon Come Up and is set for release on Febru-ary 25. The lead single, The Neighbourhood, isbeing serviced to radio on the 14th.

True North has been a staple of the Cana-dian music scene since 1981 and in the past hasreleased such artists as Rough Trade, MurrayMcLauchlan and Johnny MacLeod.

Raffi product. Sernyk's association with Raffilasted for ten years until 1988, during whichti me he also managed Fred Penner of Oak StreetMusic for five years.

Sernyk is a firm believer in the children'sgenre, especially in Canada. "The children'sproduct here continues to be the best in theworld," he asserts, but he does feel that the in-dustry could use some education in the field.

"It is a area which by and large manyretailers don't know much about. Children'sproduct sells for reasons which are not quiteevident. For a pop album you can tell theretailer that the video 's on rotation at MuchMu-sic, or that it's such and such a number on thecharts. With children's product you might saythat Peter Growski loved it on Momingside. Now to our audience that is very important, butto the retailer you might be speaking a differentlanguage."

Sernyk says that having A &M as distribu-tor is a major plus, and helps overcome thesehurdles because "A&M is the dominant dis-tributor in children's product" and so has asolid understanding of how to go about treatingthe product.

Along with Hammond and her ClassicalKids series, The Children's Group's rosterboasts the talents of Torontonian Jack Grun-sky, and American Red Grammar among oth-ers.

Currently Red Grammar and ClassicalKids are the two acts that are being distributedthrough BMG in the U.S., and other artists aregetting exposure through the Children's Book-store Distribution, an independent distributorrun by Michelle Henderson which specializesin getting product to relevant bookstores andother institutions.

Although he doesn't feel he can describean exact recipe for signing acts, Semyk doesknow what he's looking for from new artists."Children have a right to culture," he explains, expressing concern for the fact that children's

December CRIA statsThe Canadian Recording Industry Associationstatistics for December show that whereas thedecline in vinyl LPs, 7 inch single and 12 inch/cassette singles has slowed dramatically, CDsand cassettes in sales and shipmentsfor the month and year-to-date figures.

The steadying of the vinyl configurationsand singles is due to the phase -out of these atthe manufacturing level. As less product isshipped to the marketplace, the decline in saleswill reduce as well.

Overall, year-to-date numbers for ship-ments remained the same from last month witha nine percent decrease, but they dropped intothe red for the month from a one percent in-crease to a seventeen percent decrease in ship-ments. For monthly sales there was a ten per-cent drop to a four percent increase, with theyear-to-date number staying constant with aless than one percent gain.

Individually, the cassette fell from a ninepercent decrease in November shipments to a20 percent decrease this month, and the CDdropped from a 59 to a 20 percent increase in

Banham moves to MCAfrom Warner MusicBill Banham has been appointed to the positionof Marketing Manager for the MCA labelsGRP, Narada, Motown, Chess and Impact.Banham will also look after MCA's urban/rapartists.

Banham joins MCA after a three and a halfyear stint with Warner Music, where most re-cently he worked in the promotions/marketingdivision.

slightly disappointingshipments. Sales for the CD and cassette arealso far from impressive this month, with cas-settes staying at a six percent decrease and CDsdropping to a 32 percent gain from November's56 percent increase.

Two on -going trends that are causingconcern among the industry is the decline inshipments overall and the fact that the CD is theonly configuration flourishing. BrianRobertson, President of CRIA, says that "itwould not be healthy for the industry to dependon a single configuration" to thrive.

The stats area bit of a disappointment forthe industry, there was hope that the marketwould bounce back from the summer and fallslump, but Robertson states that one encourag-ing factor is the actual dollar figures: "it isremarkable that we have maintained our 1989sales figures considering the health of the econ-omy, especially when most other retail areashave shown a drop."

These figures cannot be expected to im-prove for the next month or so as the industryenters the slow post -holiday period.

COVER STORY by Alison Mercer

World On Edge take it slowEmerging from Montreal, World On Edge is aband that have entered the untraditional busi-ness of making music in a very traditional way.A steadfast professional approach has alwaysbeen a primary component to the band, whoafter following different possiblilities weresigned to Virgin under a year ago. Now theband is watching the follow-up single to theirsuccessful Still Beating climb the charts.

Consisting of guitarist Peter Hopkins, keyboardist Jon Daniels, Steph Thompson onbass and lead vocalist Rob Meyer, World OnEdge boasts a very sophisticated sound, onewhich Hopkins attributes to the group's hardwork and determination.

The idea for World On Edge was con-ceived by Peter Hopkins, guitarist for the groupover five years ago. Eventually, Hopkins metup with Jon Daniels at an audition and theybegan pursuing their ambitions together. AllWorld On Edge members joined the band byauditioning, and through a "process of elimina-tion" it arrived at its current lineup.

"Like any other band, members came andwent until we found people that were dedicatedto the music." Explains Hopkins.

From the beginning the band's strategy

Eria Fachin shoppingfor a new record dealEria Fachin, the singer who made the VincentDeGiorgio song Savin' Myself a hit in 1988, iscurrently looking for a new record deal.

Fachin recorded Savin' Myself in 1986 onDiGiorgio's Power Records label, and it quicklybecame a club hit in Canada. Soon the songmade it's way to the U.K. where it stayed at No.1 on the dance charts for 14 weeks and by 1988it had rebounded to North America where isgained tremendous airplay and peaked at num-ber 50 on the Billboard Hot Singles chart.

After Savin' Myself did so well, Fachinwas signed by American label Critique and re-corded her debut album, My Name Is EriaFachin.

"We were just lucky that we had a lot ofmaterial ready to go," remembers Fachin, whosays the recording was completed in only thirtydays. The process was a whirlwind one, but atthe time it was crucial to get the album out whileSavin' Myself was still fresh.

The album also spawned two other hits, IHear A Symphony, a classic remake of the Su-preme's hit and Your Love Just Came To Late.

Currently, Fachin and husband/managerand songwriting partner, Louis Bartolomuccihave been steadily writing more tunes. "Wehave more than enough material for an album,"says Fachin. "Our stuff isn't rap, but it's veryfunky, and it's a challenge vocally."

In the interim between writing and shop-ping for a deal, Fachin has a busy performingcareer with an eight piece band. Often she goesdown to the States for track dates, where Savin'Myself is still well remembered.

"We're moving carefully," says Fachin, who's steady determination should bring moresuccess in the near future.

and steady in the fast lanehas been clearly mapped -out; once the lineupwas in place they quit their day jobs and beganrehearsing and writing up to twelve hours a dayfour to five days a week. "We got a lot ofencouragement to keep at it," says Hopkins."We all knew that this is what we wanted, so weworked very hard." The band also decidedagainst doing any club dates, feeling that it wasmore important to concentrate on their ownsound, as opposed to becoming proficient "atdoing other people's songs."

With the attitude and the philosophy es-tablished, World On Edge put a demo togetherand literally sent it all over the world. "Themost interest we got was from CBS Switzer-land," recalls Hopkins, so the band picked upand moved to Europe where they pursued thelead. During their travels they met ChristianSchudde, publisher and songwriter who hadwritten Still Beating (the band's first single)and was looking for the right band to perform it.They soon recorded the song started shoppingit. The relationship with Shudde, meanwhile, developed into a songwriting one, and he was alarge contributor to the debut album.

The deal with CBS Switzerland neverpanned out, and gradually it became clear thatthe politics for a European label to sign aCanadian band were unsurmountable, and theforesome returned to Canada with a completedemo album and started shopping on the homefront, and they were signed by Virgin.

Produced by the band and Mike Jones, thealbum is very close to the original demo.Hopkins states that Jones was "very im-pressed" with the demo, and used it as a funda-mental guideline for the recording.

In mid -January the album was released inthe U.S. on Charisma and in the spring, WorldOn Edge will be taking to the road for the firsttime ever, something they are very anxious todo.

As to what they hope the future has instore for them, Hopkins says that after comingthis far, there is no rush.

"We're doing what we love to do most, and we're going to take it one step at a time."

Carol Medina to appearat Yugoslavian eventMarigold A/C artist Carol Medina has beeninvited to be the representing Canadian guest atthis year's The Golden Palm concert in Dub-rovnik, Yugoslavia. The show is a much publi-cized event in that country, attracting all the toprecording acts, and will take place February 8and 9 with live television coverage.

Medina will perform her current release,So Good For You and the Pretty Poison tuneCatch Me I'm Falling as well as two Croatiansongs that she wrote herself.

Medina, whose ancestry is Yugoslavian, was invited to attend the event after a represen-tative of The Golden Palm saw her perform oneof her songs at a Croatian songwriting contestin 1988, where she was awarded Best FemaleVocalist.

Madonna vs New Kids! According to most ofthe reports received this week had Madonnafighting herself for the #1 spot, and she stilldominates the chart this week, but I'm not sosure she would if the New Kids cartoon epi-sodes would be eligible for a music video.Apparently the animated video releases areselling like hot cakes and most reports haveEpisode 1, 2, 3 included on their charts. Itmakes you wonder who is buying videos andwhere is the money coming from.

Too much noise about the Justify My Lovevideo release. After finally getting a chance toview it I found there wasn't anything that dis-gusting in it, it might warrant a veiwer discre-tion sticker but I think "R" is taking it a little toofar.

It's Hammer time again! According to Capi-tol sources the latest MC Hammer single is sup-ported by a video which cost beyond the sevendigit mark. I haven't seen it yet, but I guess youcan get a lot of dancers for that kind of money, unless that figure includes jewellery and theHammer got himself a new necklace. Can'twait to see it.

It's all in the packaging as far as I'm con-cerned, after getting a hold of the MadonnaRoyal Box set. Get a CD and a video, put in acouple of pictures and put it in a pretty box andpresto you've got something that you can sellfor up to $90.00. It's a nice collection of tracksand video releases, but it's not surprising thatthe x -rated Madonna video isn't included inthis box set, a nice peice of Madonna mem-orbilia if you a royal Madonna fan.

CFNY's Earl Jive, as of January 16,1991, hasbeen acting as official Musie Director at thestation. Earl Jive has been in the radio circuitfor some time now, starting his career at "theripe old age of 16!" and after a ten year stintwith CHOM in Montreal, Earl Jive made hisway to Toronto, and settled in CFNY. EarlJive will also retain his DJ duties, appearingweekday mornings.

Kitchener's CFCA-FM and 109's heartsare going out to people who are finding the newGoods And Services tax a little hard to handle. To soften the extra financial blow, the stationsare inviting listeners to send in bills showingthe GST, and daily draws will be made wherelucky winners will have the amount of GSTshown on their bill repaid to them. If listenershappen to be listening at the time their name ischosen and they call in in the allotted time, theamount will be doubled! How's that for value?

Justin's Blackpool up forfive East Coast AwardsAlthough the band's debut release isn't dueuntil late February, Halifax band Blackpool, signed to Justin has alreadyreceived five nomination for the Canadian EastCoast Music Awards.

The ones that Blackpool is in the runningfor are Song Of The Year, Album Of The Year,Recording Band Of The Year, Pop/Rock ArtistOf The Year and Live Artist Of The Year. Thenominations are due in great part to the fact thattheir debut album, We The Living, was released

independently in Halifax. Producer TerryBrown heard the band at the music industryseminar, and offered his services to act asproducer for the album. Once the album wascomplete, the band continued shopping for adeal and signed with Justin in December, 1990.

The band is comprised of four men, andtheir sound is described as being reminiscent ofThe Band and CCR. Already they have estab-lished themselves as solid performing acts, opening for the likes of Blue Rodeo and BillyBragg. The first single from We The Living isDays And Days, and it will be released as ofFebruary 4th.

STINGThe Soul CagesA&M 75021 64052-W

After a three year hiatus, Sting hascome up with The Soul Cages, a per-sonal retrospective that is well worththe wait. The first single, All This Time, has already been serviced to mostradio formats and is showing good ac-tion. Produced by Sting and HughPadgham, the album boasts the talentsof many musicians, most of them con-tributing a distinct and exotic sound.Sting's undulating vocal work andhaunting lyrics are staples on this al-bum, as is the norm. Mad About You isan excellent bet for the next single, andJeremiah Blues (Part 1) and the titletrack are also prominent. The SoulCages has been carefully put together, and is best when listened to in its en-tirety, but individually all tracks areexcellent, and The Soul Cages is sureto match if not surpass the success ofNothing Like The Sun.(CD Reviewed) - AM

BOOKROOMFame And FortuneIntrepid N21Y-0003-F

Creating an almost folk/pop hybrid,Bookroom are an English -born Cana-dian duo whose metaphoric lyrics andthoughtful melodies make for verypleasing sounds. The lead single,Tears In The River is a good example oftheir abilities and is sure to find its wayonto to A/C and CHR. Produced by theartists (also brothers) Mark and SteveGoodall, they have succeeded in mak-ing the alternative genre work for them,in their own terms. Tinseltown, PrisonerOf You Love and Something Wickedare others tracks which jump out fromthe album. (CD reviewed) - AM

GLORIA ESTEFAN - PopInto The LightEpic EK 46988-H

An untimely accident appears to havebeen the primary source of inspirationfor the album, but Estefan has focusedon the positive, specifically the support

she received from all corners of the in-dustry. The lead single is Coming OutOf The Dark, a spiritual song musicallyand lyrically which flows into strong cre-secendos. It is an unusual choice, as itis not the typical powerhouse dancetune or romantic ballad that Estefan isan master at. The traditional Estefanstyle is apparent on other tracks on thealbum; Light Of Love and Mama YoCan't Go have the raw energy of MiamiSound Machine days, and Seal OurFate and Heart With Your Name On Itcentre around the funkier, rockier sideof things. This album will get eaten upon A/C and CHR formats and will seesturdy retail action.(CD reviewed) - AM

DAVID LEE ROTH - RockA Little Ain't EnoughWarner Bros CD 26477

The wicked David Lee Roth is back withan album that can be termed HeavyMetal Pop, if you will. Produced by BobRock, the album has a razor sharpfocus and Roth makes use of all hisperforming wiles ad nauseam, in par-ticular his trademark lounge lizardscreech, which will be much to the de-light of Roth fans. Undeniably, Roth haspipes of steel, and uses them to the maxin L'il Ain't Enough, HammerheadShark and the traditionally rocky 40Below. With Tell The Truth Roth tones itdown a tad and even gets quite subtle.A Little will appeal to that special brandof rock/metal fan who is heavily into theover -the -top styled tunes that Roth is agenius at. Making strong debuts onAOR that is sure to carry over to retail.(CD reviewed) - AM

C + C MUSIC FACTORY - DanceGonna Make You SweatColumbia CK 47093-H

These guys aren't kidding. Although thealbum won't start you sweating sponta-neously as soon as you put it on, themusic will make you want to do some-thing that will. The lead single and titletrack featuring Freedom Williams is upthere with the funkiest, and most of theother tracks on the album live up to theprecedent it sets, unlike a lot of dancegroups which come out with one excel-lent tune on an album which is an over -

all disappointment. Here We Go, Let'sRock And Roll, Things That Make YouGo Hmmm and Let's Get Funkee aresongs that are as exciting as Gonna

Make You Sweat, and any diehard

dance fanatic can be expected to be

adding this one to their collection anytime now. (CD reviewed) - AM

29 PALMS - Alternat Ive/PopFatal JoyI.R.S. X2 -13054-F

If this band is sure of anything, they'resure how to put out solid rock/pop tunesthat are packed with charm and cha-risma. The music is simple and to thepoint, music for music's sake, lyrically itis intelligent and delivered with appeal-ing innocence. Magic Man is outstand-ing, as are the title track and Ivan Ho!,Teddy's Song and Sheephaven Bay.All the songs are evocative, and themusicianship is of a very high calibre.Could make appearances on all for-mats, and should see some solid suc-cess at retail as well.(CD reviewed) - AM

JESUS JONESDoubtFood C2 95715-F

This band out of England has thatcomplex sound that is the new order ofrock 'n roll in the U.K. these days, en-compassing elements that will appealto most spectrums of the rock crowd. The opening track Trust Me, is loud andbusy, delving into thrash/metal andpunk and setting a precedent for almostanything. Who Where Why gets funkyand is very danceable, while RightHere, Right Now is definite mainstreamradio material with its extremely hooky

- Alternative

and melodic qualities. Are You Satisfiedand International Bright Young Thing.are also a couple of the better tunes onthis albums of winners. Jesus Joneshas the material for mass appeal and itwould be well -deserved. AOR alterna-tive and college and possible CHRwould do well to take notice.(CD reviewed) - AM

MEAT BEATMANIFESTO99%WEA 61026-2-P

Run of the mill dance tunes, these arenot. Meat Beat Manifesto has com-bined the eerines of a Bauhaus and theelectric rhythm of a contemporary rap,in fact these guys are rap, and their in-tense monotone delivery and thought-ful, sometimes tongue in cheek lyricsgive them a real difference. The tracksDeviate and 10X Faster Than TheSpeed Of Love are two of the morefunkier ones off the album, PsychedOut speaks for itself and the title trackboasts a unique if not slightly bizarreinterpretation of melody. Not intendedfor the top 40 dance clubs or radio, MeatBeat Manifesto will definitely makeappearances on alternative and col-lege radio, appealing heavily to thethose fans.(CD reviewed) - AM

ACOSTA RUSSELLAcosta RussellEureka U2 -70002-F

These two Scarborough Ontario sing-ers have just released their debut al-bum of musicwhich is electronic dance/funk. The two have strong voices andremarkably wide ranges, making forsome pretty powerful vocal work. Thefirst single, Never Change My Mind is aballad, and should figure prominentlyon A/C and CHR stations. The majorityof the other tunes and funkadelic dancewith popping bass lines and pumpingbeats resulting in a relentless dancegenre that promises to get any personwith a sense for rhythm on their feet.Produced byJoel Wertman with ClaudeDesjardins, the tracks Call Me andChange Your Attitude and the openingWhy'd You Have To Get Me Started aretunes that really stand out. Should dowell in all respects. (CD reviewed) - AM

:4-11111THE OTHER SIDE OF LENNON - SandraShevey McLelleand & Stewart Inc. -

$29.95. McLelland & Stewart Publishers haverecently put out a most interesting, if slightlyunsettling account of John Lennon's life. Writ-ten by Sandra Shevey, the book is entitled The

I.. ,-... ,....

N.....,...,,.....

.

SANDRA MYOther Side Of Lennon, and serves to uncoverthe myth of the "greatest rock star" in the world.

In the first paragraph of Chapter 1,Shevey writes that Lennon was "ashamed of hiscontributions to the greatest rock band in theworld." For those of us who have nurtured thegodliness of John Lennon over the years, this israther like a kick in the face, as it was for me.From then on I read with scepticism, words thatseemed malicious and bitter, perhaps writtenby an obsessed "groupie" who was sufferingfrom a bout of unrequited love. Tales ofLennon's depraved stage antics and coarse at-titudes came as a surprise, but I consideredthem to be wildly exaggerated.

As the book progresses, however, Shevey

does succeed in gently turning things around toher favour. Because Shevey avoids any polite-ness from the very beginning and simply statesthe truth as she sees it, the first few chapters doseem over -zealous. But the tone of the book isevened out and it becomes clear that the pointof view is a legitimate one.

The writing is cutting and this is a goodfeature, Shevey is not apologetic about tellingthe other side of things. But at times she doestend to get a little gleeful when there is undeni-able proof that her facts about a certain Lennonatrocity are straight.

The book is filled with a plethora ofquotes, and although they are a main hook inthe books appeal they do not always validatefacts with the authority they are intended to,rendering some to be heresay.

It is undeniable that The Other Side OfLennon is a very meaty read. There are no ele-ments of tabloid researching methods, Sheveyis complete and covers all the bases, effectivelytracing Lennon's career from start to finish.Although the it serves to uncover differenttruths about Lennon than the media tradition-ally presents regarding the artist, The OtherSide does not paint a negative picture, butperforms the necessary task of establishingLennon as an ordinary working class man whohappened to be a part of the greatest phenome-non in the history of the music industry.Lennon's talent as a songwriter and musician isaddressed in the book, but is something no onecan put a scale to. For the most part, Sheveyprovides the reader with facts with which tomake their own conclusions.

The information about the climb of theBeatles, Lennon's reaction to it, their relation-ship with Brian Epstein and their record deals isall fascinating. The Other Side Of Lennon willbe highly entertaining for Lennon fans andothers, it is a revealing look into the life of ahistorical personality and an insight into a fig-ure that we have epitomized to obsession inevery way possible. - AM
