REDUCING RACISM IN SCHOOLS

According to Garcia (2011) one method that teacherssuch myself use is called Moral Admonition. This is

when I directly address the issue and demonstrate to

the learners their wrong behavior.

In my own classrooms, I use the students own cultureand religion. For example in the Quran it states It is

He, who created you, fashioned you perfectly, and gave

you due proportion (Verse 82:7), so I will recite that

verse to my students and the issue is over.

REDUCING RACISM IN SCHOOLS

Another method I like using is Social

learning (Ferguson, 2004). Female Saudi

students are restricted in their society

and so the idea of taking my students to

refugee camps is out of the question.Therefore, I bring it to them in the

classrooms. I show students how many

other people live and how my students

should feel blessed and help others.

The school or university should implement Policies that aid

people in understanding different cultures. For examplein some of my classes I have Diverse CulturalRestaurants. The aim of this activity is to allow learnersmingle and introduce themselves to other students indifferent classes. This activity will also open a window for

the students parents to come to the school, cook some oftheir traditional meals with their children and give anopportunity for parents to get together with other parentswhose children are in the same grade and have the samecultural background as their children. I know that this is awonderful way for different shy parents to develop their

interpersonal skills and build a group of friends. (Portland2009)
