French Exploration in Texas

French empire in North America was based in Canada.Rene Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle- after explorers realized that the Mississippi River would not provide the Northwest Passage they were looking for, La Salle decided to use the river as the base of a large trading empire. He would build a fort at the mouth of the Mississippi River. In 1684 he sailed from France to build his fort with 4 ships and about 200 people. He had many setbacks…….

In 1685, having sailed past the Mississippi River by over 100 miles, they landed in Texas near present-day, Matagorda Bay. There they built Fort St. Louis.READ Pages 72, 73, 74
