Bible Passage: Matthew 9:9-13

Key Bible Verse: Mark 12:31

Life ApplicationI can love all people.

Level of Biblical Learning (Community and World)I can love others in my community and in the world because the Bible says to.

Read Matthew 9:9-13 to learn how Jesus showed love to people others did not want to be around.•Note Matthew's occupation—a despicable

occupation in Bible times. Tax collectors bid to collect taxes in particular areas. The highest bidder was given the area to collect the taxes. Tax collectors would collect money to cover their costs plus extra for personal profit. No one regulated the amounts tax collectors could collect. Why would Jesus desire a tax collector to follow Him?

•Note the call: "Follow Me." Jesus extended the invitation to follow Him. When and how did Jesus extend the call to you? Have you followed in His ways? Jesus spent time with tax collectors and other sinners. Do you spend time talking with non-Christians? Are you developing relationships to be able to tell people about Jesus' love?

•Define sinners. The Pharisees' definition of sinners included immoral people and ordinary people who failed to keep all the rituals the Pharisees said their laws required. Contact with these types of people was forbidden by law. The Pharisees allowed following their legalistic rituals to keep them from building relationships with sinners. Yet, Jesus spent time and ate with sinners. Are there rituals in our Christian faith we should follow? Do any of these rituals keep us from reaching out and loving people?

•Ask yourself: Do I love all people? We are commanded in the Bible to love people in our communities and in the world. What about the people who rub us the wrong way, who have done things against us, or who practice lifestyles we disagree with? Jesus showed love to all people. How will we convey to preschoolers the need to love all people?

•Say: "Each time you hear the word friend, gently clap hands with your partner."

•Open your Bible to Matthew 9 and tell the story.

Matthew and His FriendsBased on Matthew 9:9-13

Jesus saw a man working at a tax collector's booth. This man, Matthew, collected taxes, or money people owed to the government. Jesus told Matthew to follow Him. Matthew left his booth and followed Jesus.

Jesus and Matthew ate together. Matthew invited other tax collectors and people who did not know Jesus to eat with him.

The Pharisees, who were leaders in the town, did not like the tax collectors and other people at Matthew's house. The leaders asked Jesus' helpers why Jesus would eat with these people. The leaders were surprised Jesus would be friends with the people they did not like.

When Jesus heard the Pharisees, He told them He wanted to be friends with all people.

in Jesus and wanted to follow Jesus. Many of Matthew's friends came to eat with Jesus."

•Continue: "We can love people by helping, praying, and caring for them. We can pray for people we do or do not know. We show love when we give money, food, or supplies to help people. We show love when we tell people about Jesus."

12 Make Application (2 minutes)•Direct preschoolers to stand up.•Say: "Let's think about things we have done to

show love to people. If you have ever visited someone who is sick, stand on one foot. Put your foot down. If you've ever given food to someone else, turn around. Be still. Raise your hand if you've given someone a toy. Put your hands down. Sit down if you've given someone a hug (all should sit). These are actions that show we love and care for others. Mark 12:31 teaches that we should love people as we love ourselves. We should love all people."

14aPresent the Offering and Pray (2 minutes)•Invite a child to present the offering.•Direct children to bow their heads and close
