Marimbist Tom Burritt and friends return for a high-octane hour of rhythm and sound.

Igor Stravinsky thought he was drawing on the music of Italian baroque composer Giovanni Pergolesi as inspiration for his 1920 ballet Pulcinella. Scholars have since reattributed many of these pieces to composers on this program, including Domenico Gallo and Count van Wassenaer. Performed on period instruments.

The award-winning Texas Guitar Quartet performs rhumbas, fandangos, and Isaac Albéniz’s Suite Española in an evening of Spanish and Latin American music.

The Artisian Quartet and Victoria Bach Festival artists perform waltzes, mambos and folk dances for small ensembles by Dvor̆ák, Piazzolla, Grieg, and featured composer Roberto Sierra. Pianists Faith DeBow, Melissa Marse, and Michelle Schumann put six hands on the piano at once in Rachmaninov’s Romance and Valse.

The colorful lineup of this year’s festival features extraordinary musicians performing compelling music with drama, sensuality, and flair.

The 2011 Festival emphasizes ritmos latinos (Latin rhythms) and musical blends. My colleague Michelle Schumann has shaped a beautiful week of chamber music and we introduce Faith DeBow as the new coordinator of our exciting New Young Artists program. We are pleased to be performing for the first time in the beautiful new Victoria Performing Arts Center, where will we present our grand finale: Missa Latina. Puerto Rican composer Roberto Sierra has written a monumental Mass for peace that will move your heart even as you move your feet to its infectious Carribean rhythms. Let the music inspire you--there is a place for you at the 2011 Victoria Bach Festival. Please join us!

Sierra’s 2006 choral-orchestral blockbuster melds lacy orchestral textures, Caribbean dance rhythms, and inventive percussion into an irresistible and poignant music.

On Missa Latina: “Bustling with propulsive Latin rhythms and salsa flavoring...luscious harmonies, haunting themes, and colorful orchestrations.” --Houston Chronicle “Music that sets out to be liked...a unified and deeply felt utterance of the heart. The Missa Latina will bring pleasure to a great many listeners.” --Washington Post

On Heidi Grant Murphy: “She has that kind of dexterity that makes listeners hold their breath in awe...Murphy is the most natural of sopranos.” --The Philadelphia Inquirer
