TRANSCRIPT
The ‘New Normal’, how has COVID-19 changed the way we
do things? This is a question dominating the media and our
society at the moment. Whether it’s travel, spending time with
mates or doing the groceries, the simple things have changed
and continue to evolve. From an education perspective the
change has been dramatic and the BTC community have
responded positively.
With all students including boarders returning over the last 2
weeks our classrooms are full and staff are focusing on re-
engagement with face to face learning. The new normal looks
good at BTC with subtle changes in the delivery of content
and learning resources already in action. This has helped us
prepare students and staff for the launch of BYOD@BTC in
Term 3. The home learning experience whilst challenging for
many, has enabled us to explore the power of online learning
tools and techniques that will support the traditional learning
environment as we move to BYOD.

Our Boarders have had to make the biggest adjustments upon their return with significant restrictions
in place. As many of the restrictions in the broader community have eased, the boarders have
continued with social distancing and restrictions around their movements in and out of the boarding
house. This weekend, much to the relief of our students, supervised town leave returns along with
approved overnight leave. Both our boy and girl boarders deserve a massive congratulations for their
calm and understanding approach, supporting their peers through these challenging times.
One of the biggest impacts of the COVID-19 restrictions for the Charters Towers Community has
been the cancellation of sporting opportunities and competitions. With a rich sporting history at BTC
the young and old alike have been awaiting the sound of the referees’s whistle, the bouncing ball
and the thud of colliding bodies to return. Over the course of this week and next, many of our local
sporting clubs have been able to enter their 'new normal' with sanitising stations and participant
limits. Following the re-introduction of our House Challenges last Friday, the first major sporting
event for the term will be our Interhouse Cross Country next Friday. Staff and students are looking
forward to this opportunity to shake off the cob webs and get some air in the lungs running around
the beautiful Blackheath & Thornburgh grounds. We hope to see the re-introduction of Interschool
co-curricular opportunities as we move into Term 3.

I would like to start off this week by congratulating Claire Harvey, the winner of our writing
competition for National Boarding Week with her poem; One Thing That I Will Never Forget About
Boarding. Well done Claire and thank you to everyone who entered both the writing and photo
competitions. There were some fabulous entries!
Week 7 has been a busy week for our boarding girls with restrictions lifting and more and more leave
options are becoming available. We have been working with Qld Health to facilitate the safest
possible way for our students to be able to go on leave, and we are happy to advise that our
boarders are able to resume weekend host leave again. To facilitate this type of leave the following
processes have been put in place.
Parent LeaveBoarders are allowed on leave with their parents as per the "Return to Boarding" agreement
endorsed by parents. Students can leave on Friday afternoon, no earlier than 3:30pm, but need to
be back by 6:30pm Sunday. Please email the relevant Head of Boarding with the details of the
requested leave, including that everyone in the household has been healthy and well for the 14 days
prior to the leave.
Relatives/Approved HostsBoarders can now go on overnight local leave within Charters Towers, Friday or Saturday nights. At
this stage, only one night is permissible. We ask that both the host and parent/guardian email the
relevant Head of Boarding to request leave and include the following information:
There has also been a change to our town leave, and as of this Saturday morning (June 6), all
students will be able to walk down town with a Supervisor. From there they will be able to shop in
small groups, and at the conclusion of the leave, all students will check in with the staff member
down town and then walk back to school as a group. Town leave will be from 9:30am until 11:30am,
and all students will wear Day Uniform.
Thank you very much to all of our parents for their ongoing support of our additional COVID-19
measures. The restrictions around boarding have been challenging at times but necessary to keep
all of our students and staff safe. Your understanding is very much appreciated. If you do have any
questions or concerns, please contact either Andy or myself.
