“Moses: Lifelong Journey of Faith”: How’s Your Heart?

We are nearing the end of our summer message series, “Moses: Lifelong Journey of Faith,” just this week and next remain. Throughout this series we have allowed Moses, one of the most important figures in the Old Testament, teach us some valuable lessons for our own journey of faith. We have learned the importance of counting our blessings, for gratitude is the foundation for

greatness. We learned the importance of listening to God’s “liberating truths,” rather than being bound up by our “limiting beliefs.” We learned that God wants people who are willing to move forward, trusting that God will act for them. There have also been important leadership lessons, such as effective leaders are delegators and not merely doers, and that God wants leaders who take extreme ownership of those they lead, being willing to make sacrifices for them. Last week we learned that whatever we focus on gets bigger, so instead of telling God how big your problems are, we should tell our problems how big our God is. This week we find Moses in a situation that most of us have been in, especially if you have ever taken a family vacation in a car. Moses and the Israelites are nearing the end of their 40 year sojourn in the desert, and basically Moses is hearing a lot of “are we there yet?” Remember from last week, that because of their lack of trust in God, God said that all the Israelites who were freed from Egypt would not enter the Promise Land, with the exception of Caleb, Joshua, and Moses, because they had always trusted God. So at the end of the 40 years, nearly all of that first generation have died, and the Israelites that Moses is leading are their children and grandchildren. Unfortunately, they are not much better than the previous generation, and this week we find them is a familiar situation – they are thirsty. Despite the fact that God has been providing for them all these years, giving them the Manna, making sure they had what they needed, once they get a little thirsty the Israelites start complaining, even going so far as to say that it would be better to return to Egypt. Now almost all these Israelites had never been slaves, they have lived their whole lives free, but when things get a little tough, they want to return to the slavery of Egypt. Moses pleads with God, and God tells him and Aaron to stand before a large rock, and God is going to speak through Moses to provide water from the rock, something he did for the previous generation. So the people gather in front of Moses, but they are still complaining, and Moses blows a gasket. He starts yelling at the people, letting out all his frustrations with them, and finally says that he will give them water from the rock and he strikes the rock twice. Water does come out of the rock, so the people’s thirst is satisfied, but God is not happy with Moses. Moses did not trust God to act, and because of that, now Moses will also not be allowed to enter the Promise Land. Just as there is a principle in physics that says what goes up must come down, there is a principle in the spiritual life that says what ever goes into your heart will eventually come out of your heart. Moses had held a lot of resentment towards the people in his heart, and it all came out, and it had a disastrous effect for him. What we want you to know this week: Whatever goes into your heart, eventually comes out. What we want you to do this week: Spend 15 minutes this week asking yourself, “What is going on in my heart?”

HOW EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE CAN HELP KIDS OVERCOME DIFFICULTIES AND BECOME SAINTS

Emotional Intelligence is the capacity to be aware of, control and express one’s emotions, and to handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically. In other words, Emotional Intelligence is being able to recognize your own emotions and the emotions of others, discern between different feelings and label them appropriately, use emotional information to guide thinking and behavior, and manage and/or adjust emotions to adapt to environments or achieve one’s goals.

Being able to understand and manage your emotions and those of the people around you is important as a basic life skill but, more importantly, in helping one to become a saint. People with a high degree of emotional intelligence know what they are feeling and what their emotions mean, and how these emotions can affect others. Here are some ways to foster emotional intelligence:

1. Utilize an assertive style of communicating. Assertive does not mean aggressive nor does it mean passive. It means communicating your opinions, beliefs and needs in a direct way while still respecting others.

2. Respond instead of react to conflict. The emotionally intelligent person knows how to stay calm during stressful situations. They don’t make impulsive decisions that can lead to bigger problems. They understand that during conflict the goal is a resolution, and they make a conscience choice to align their actions and words with that.

3. Utilize active listening skills. Listen for clarity instead of waiting your turn to speak. Understand what is being said before speaking or ask questions for clarification. Also, pay attention to nonverbal cues.

4. Be Motivated. Set goals and be resilient in the face of challenges. The important point in motivation is to just do it. Writing may motivate you, but some days you don’t feel like taking the time to do it. That’s when you just need to begin. Once you start writing you will build motivation.

5. Practice ways to maintain a positive attitude. Be aware of the moods of those around you and guard your attitude accordingly. Know what you need to do to have a great day – prayer, exercise etc.

6. Positive self-awareness. Be aware of your own emotions and how they can affect others. 7. Take critique well. Instead of getting offended, take a few moments to understand where the

critique is coming from, how it may be affecting others and how to best resolve the issue. 8. Empathize with others. Empathy is the ability to feel, see, hear, taste and smell like other

people. Some say that it is walking in the other person’s shoes. Empathy helps you to relate to others. It opens the door for mutual respect and understanding.

9. Utilize leadership skills. Set high standards for yourself and be an example for others. Take initiative and develop great decision making and problem solving skills.

10. Be approachable and likeable. Smile and give off a positive presence. Develop great social and interpersonal skills. Learn how to communicate clearly, both verbally and non-verbally.

By learning to be more emotionally intelligent, kids practice virtue. When you add grace to one’s own efforts that is the formula for developing saints. The primary means of grace comes through the Sacraments. But, grace also comes secondarily through the practice of virtue. Grace is God’s life in us. The more we have the more we imitate Christ. And, that’s an emotionally intelligent formula for holiness.

MOSES

Week 7: How’s Your Heart? As we near the end of this message series, we are also going to jump to the end of the Israelites journey in the desert. Last week we looked at the Israelites looking only at the problems of entering the Promise Land. For their lack of faith, God has them wander the desert for 40 years. Moses was like leading a road trip with 2 million people all gripping, “Are we there yet?” At a time when they are looking for water, Moses loses it. Instead to commanding the rock to give water, he strikes the rock twice. Water comes out, but God is not happy with Moses. For his disobedience, he will not enter the Promise Land. What we want you to know this week: Whatever goes into your heart, eventually comes out. What we want you to do this week: Spend 15 minutes this week asking yourself, “What is going on in my heart?”
