WEEK 7 ■ WILLIAM & MARY VS. JAMES MADISON GAME NOTES

TRIBEATHLETICS.COM 3@WMTribeFootball

LAST MEETING W&M fell to No. 2 James Madison, 51-0, in both teams' conference opener on Sept. 22, 2018. JMU utilized good starting field position during the first half en route to building a 17-0 lead at the intermission. W&M forced a pair of turnovers in the first half and marched inside the Dukes' 30-yard line twice but turned the ball over on downs on both occasions. JMU posted a touchdown on the opening drive of the second half and outscored W&M, 34-0, during the final 30 minutes to help secure the league-opening win.

NARROW MARGINS Although the last two games have been lopsided, six of the last nine matchups between W&M and JMU have been tightly contested, as those games have been decided by no more than a touchdown - including a double overtime contest in 2012. The recent matchups reversed a trend that developed during the prior four years when the average margin of victory was 20 points.

SLOWING DOWN THE DUKES W&M’s defense has been effective slowing down JMU's passing attack during the last 10 matchups, as it has allowed just 163.9 passing yards per game (1,639) during the recent stretch.

SCHOOL RECORD W&M set a single-game school record for fewest passing yards allowed at JMU in 2010, as the Dukes threw for zero yards (attempted just one pass).

OVERTIME W&M and JMU have played a pair of overtime contests, as the Dukes earned narrow victories in 2002 (34-31) and 2012 (27-26). The 2012 matchup went into double overtime and ended after a failed two-point conversion attempt.

FAMILIAR FACE JMU safeties coach Ryan Smith is a 2014 graduate of W&M and a former cornerback for the Tribe (2009-13). A two-time CAA Academic All-Conference selection, Smith totaled 47 tackles, a sack and an interception as a senior.

■ TRIBE BY THE NUMBERS

3 Non-offensive touchdowns scored by W&M this season, which includes a 47-yard pick-six by Arman Jones at Virginia and two kickoff returns for a touchdown by Bronson Yoder (93 yds vs. Colgate and 98 yds at UAlbany).

6 Touchdowns scored by W&M in its last seven trips into the red zone. Additionally, the Tribe has found the end zone on nine of its last 11 trips inside its opponents’ 20-yard line.

6 Of the last nine matchups between W&M and JMU have been decided by no more than a touchdown, including a double overtime contest in 2012.

11 Catches by true freshman wide receiver Kane Everson in the Tribe’s last outing against No. 5/8 Villanova. It marked the most receptions by a W&M player since Tre McBride (2014). Everson has totaled 18 catches for 252 yards with three touchdowns during the last two contests.

13.88 Yards per completion by quarterback Kilton Anderson this season. The impressive figure ranks third in the CAA and 24th nationally.

18.2 Points per game allowed by W&M’s defense at Zable Stadium since the start of the 2009 season. The Tribe owns a 37-19 record at home during that span.

90 Homecoming games played by W&M, as the Tribe owns a 53-37 record in those contests. Last season, W&M defeated a nationally ranked Maine squad that advanced to the NCAA Semifinals. It was the Black Bears lone conference loss in 2018.

■ W&M/JMU NOTES

WELCOME BACK Saturday’s contest will mark the 91st homecoming in the Tribe’s football history. Traditionally, the squad has thrived on this special weekend, as the program sports a 53-37 all-time record in homecoming games. Last season, W&M defeated a nationally ranked Maine squad that advanced to the NCAA Semifinals. It was the Black Bears lone conference loss in 2018. W&M has greeted its alumni with dominating performances in a number of its recent homecoming games, as the program has won 14 of its last 20 tilts,

including 10 by double-digit margins. Offensively, the team is averaging 28.2 points per contest during the span (564 points). The W&M faithful have only left Zable unhappy eight times in the last 28 homecoming events (1997, 1998, 2006, 2007, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2017), while four of those six losses were to teams ranked in the national top five (No. 1 Villanova in 1997, No. 4 UMass in 2006, No. 5 Villanova in 2014 and No. 1 James Madison in 2017). The Tribe’s first homecoming game was held in 1926, a 14-0 win over George Washington University.

FOLLOWING AN OPEN WEEK Although W&M defeated Villanova last season following its open week, it stands as the Tribe's lone win in such games during the last eight seasons. Additionally, W&M has won just three of its last 13 games coming off its open date.

CHALLENGING STRETCH After squaring off against No. 5/8 Villanova in its last outing, No. 2 James Madison will mark W&M's second consecutive opponent ranked among the nation's top five. Additionally, beginning with the Villanova contest, the Tribe's current stretch of six games includes matchups versus five teams who have owned national rankings this season.

WINNING THE TURNOVER BATTLE During the last two seasons, W&M is 5-1 when it commits fewer turnovers than its opponents, while it is 0-7 when it loses the turnover battle during the recent stretch.

SUCCESS IN THE THIRD QUARTER W&M has thrived in the third quarters of games this season and is outscoring its opponents, 52-23, during the first 15 minutes after halftime.

20 IS THE MAGIC NUMBER W&M owns a 7-2 record during the last three seasons in games in which it scored more than 20 points. The only two losses have come in the Tribe's last two games (UAlbany, Villanova).

LEADING AT HALFTIME Dating back to the 2014 season, the Tribe has won 16 of its last 20 games when leading at halftime. Three of those setbacks came against Towson (2016, 2017, 2018), while the other was at UAlbany (2019).

IMPORTANCE OF GETTING AHEAD During the last two seasons, W&M is 5-3 when it scores first, while it is just 1-7 in games in which the opposition scored first. Dating back to the start of the 2013 season, W&M is 24-13 in games in which it scores first. Conversely, it is 12-26 when the opponent scores first.

30-POINT PERFORMANCES W&M has scored at least 30 points in three of its four games against FCS opponents this season and is averaging 31.8 points per game in those contests. Prior to this year, the Tribe reached the 30-point mark just once during the last two seasons.

RED ZONE EFFICIENCY W&M has been effective scoring touchdowns with its recent red zone opportunities, as it has found the end zone on six of its last seven trips inside its opponents' 20-yard line. Additionally, the Tribe has scored touchdowns on nine of its last 11 red zone opportunities.

OFFENSIVE PRODUCTION W&M has totaled more than 400 yards of total offense twice this season. Entering the fall, W&M had not eclipsed the 400-yard mark since 2016.

YARDS ON THE GROUND The Tribe has rushed for more than 250 yards twice this season. Entering the 2019 campaign, W&M had eclipsed the 250-yard mark on the ground just once during

■ TEAM OFFENSIVE NOTES

The three losses came against UAlbany, 2019; Delaware, 2015; JMU, 2014; Villanova, 2013.

TRUE FRESHMAN Nine true freshman have played for the Tribe this season: punter George Eberle, wide receiver Kane Everson, offensive lineman Bart Francois, long snapper Sam Katz, running back Donavyn Lester, defensive lineman Nate Lynn, quarterback Hollis Mathis, cornerback Latrelle Smith and safety Bronson Yoder.

SUCCESS VS. FCS IN NON-CONFERENCE With the wins against Lafayette and Colgate, W&M has won 35 of its last 37 games against non-conference FCS opponent during the regular season. The lone losses during that span are Lafayette (2012) and Colgate (2018). Additionally it owns a 38-3 record vs. FCS non-conference teams during the regular season dating back through the 2002 season.

NEW ERA BEGINS A new era of Tribe football is underway as first-year head coach Mike London leads W&M in 2019. A former assistant under longtime Tribe head coach Jimmye Laycock, London returns to Williamsburg with an impressive list of accomplishments as a head coach that includes winning a national title at the University of Richmond (2008) and earning Atlantic Coast Conference Coach of the Year distinction at the University of Virginia (2011). Additionally, he was honored as the 2008 AFCA FCS National Coach of the Year.

CHALLENGING SLATE Playing its first 12-game regular season slate since 2014, W&M's schedule this fall features a number of challenging matchups. In addition to playing two FBS opponents (Virginia/ECU), W&M will square off against five teams nationally ranked in the preseason polls (James Madison, Maine, Towson, Elon, Colgate). This season marks the first time since 1991 that W&M's schedule will include two FBS opponents.

ONE TRIBE, ONE FAMILY The W&M athletic department’s unofficial slogan - “One Tribe, One Family” - is especially true for the Tribe football team, as the roster features a pair of brother tandems - Collin/Corey Parker and Andrew/Sam Trainer. Additionally, head coach Mike London's son, Mike London Jr. is the Tribe's wide receivers coach.

SENIOR LEADERSHIP Leading the Tribe's 19-member senior class is a quartet of talented seniors - Nate Atkins (senior, LB), Bill Murray (senior, DT), Corey Parker (senior, DB) and Mark Williamson (senior, OL). Atkins enters his second season as a captain, becoming just the 12th player in the program’s 126-year history to be selected as a team captain twice. In addition to their leadership, all four players have excelled on the field and earned all-conference honors at least once during their careers.

TRIBE IN THE NFL Four former Tribe standouts were in NFL training

camps this summer - DeAndre Houston-Carson (Bears), Tre McBride (Jaguars), Luke Rhodes (Colts) and B.W. Webb (Bengals). Additionally, a pair of former Tribe players are currently serving as NFL head coaches - Mike Tomlin ‘95 (Pittsburgh Steelers, head coach) and Sean McDermott ‘98 (Buffalo Bills). Atlanta Falcons head coach Dan Quinn also has W&M ties, as he was an assistant on the Tribe’s staff in 1994. Also noteworthy is a pair of former W&M head coaches who went on to have extraordinary careers - Marv Levy and Lou Holtz. Levy served as W&M’s head coach from 1964-68 and was followed by Holtz from 1969-71.

TRIBE IN THE NFL When All-American defensive back DeAndre Houston Carson was selected by the Chicago Bears in the sixth round of the 2016 NFL Draft, he became the sixth Tribe player drafted since 2009. Below are a few notes about W&M’s six NFL Draft picks since 2009. • Leads the CAA and ranks second in the FCS, behind only Montana (7) • Ranks third in the state of Virginia (behind only Virginia Tech and Virginia) • Is more than ACC member Duke (5)

HEAD COACH

Tremendously successful and widely respected, Mike London enters his first season as head coach of the William & Mary football program. London, a former assistant under longtime Tribe head coach Jimmye Laycock, returns to Williamsburg with an impressive list of accomplishments as a head coach that includes winning a national title at the University of Richmond (2008) and earning Atlantic Coast Conference Coach of the Year distinction at the University of Virginia (2011). “This is an exciting day for William & Mary, and we are thrilled to welcome Mike and his family back to Williamsburg,” W&M Director of Athletics Samantha K. Huge said at the time of London hiring in November. “Mike embodies the values and character that we need to lead our football program forward and he has demonstrated an ability to develop players and win championships over his nearly 30 years in coaching. His unique journey and commitment to the development of young men make him the perfect successor to carry on Coach Jimmye Laycock’s 39-year legacy while forging a new path for Tribe Football.” Howard University’s head coach the last two seasons, London’s tenure leading the Bison was highlighted with his selection as a finalist for the 2017 STATS Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Eddie Robinson Award, which is bestowed upon the nation’s top head coach. Additionally, he earned the 2017 American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Regional Coach of the Year award after guiding Howard to a 6-2 conference record – the program’s first winning season since 2012. His inaugural campaign at HU featured a season-opening win at UNLV, which ESPN lauded as one of college football’s greatest upsets. Prior to his two-year stint at HU, London served as an associate head coach/defensive line coach at the University of Maryland in 2016 where he helped lead the Terps to an appearance in the Quick Lane Bowl. In addition to garnering ACC Coach of the Year honors at UVA in 2011, London led the Cavaliers to the Chick-Fil-A Bowl. En route to earning the postseason bowl bid, he guided UVA to road wins at Miami and Florida State – becoming the first program in the nation to accomplish the feat in the same season. London gained his first head coaching experience at Richmond, his alma mater, where he amassed a 24-5 record and guided the Spiders to the 2008 FCS national title during his initial campaign. His efforts were recognized by the AFCA, which selected him as the FCS National Coach of the Year. After leading the Spiders to an 8-0 start the following season, UR became just the third FCS school to receive a vote in the Associated Press (AP) Poll. London landed the head coaching job at UR after an exceptional two-year stint as UVA’s defensive coordinator (2006-07). During his first season, the Cavaliers allowed

just 289.5 yards per game – the program’s best figure in 27 years. The following season, London’s defense ranked sixth nationally in sacks and among the nation’s top 20 in scoring defense and rushing defense. London oversaw the development of an outstanding group of All-ACC honorees, highlighted by 2007 unanimous All-America standout Chris Long, who was the second overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft. Before returning to UVA, where he was an assistant from 2001-04, London spent the 2005 season in the NFL as the Houston Texans’ defensive line coach. London’s first stint with the Cavaliers also included serving as the program’s recruiting coordinator from 2002-04. London, a native of Hampton, Va., began his coaching career as the outside linebackers coach at Richmond in 1988 before coaching the defensive line at William & Mary under Jimmye Laycock (1991-94). He then returned to UR for two more years (1995-96) as the outside linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator before taking on the defensive line coaching duties at Boston College from 1997-00. A standout defensive back at Richmond (1979-82), London served as a team captain his senior season and was signed by the Dallas Cowboys as a free agent in 1983. London graduated from UR in 1983 with a bachelor’s degree in sociology and a year later earned a degree in law enforcement from the Richmond Police Academy. He served as a detective from 1985-87. London and his wife, Regina, have four children: daughters Ticynn, Jaicyn and Madicyn and son Korben. He has three children from a previous marriage: sons Michael Jr. and Brandon, and daughter Kristen.
